Should Pokemon Support Unlimited More?

As a TCG enthusiast who plays both PTCG and Magic the Gathering, I have built many decks over the course of many years. However, when I compare my two favorite games, I've been starting to notice the difference in the way the different playing formats are managed and dealt with between the two. I came to the conclusion that Pokemon should host tournaments and leagues purely for Expanded and Unlimited, not just for Standard.

Please note: I am not one of those kids you see at your local game store who come with a deck of bleh from 2008ish, and tries to argue that standard is "dumb" when he gets rejected by playing partners. I am a genuine player of this game, who is just trying to share their ideas.

Pokemon recently changed around their event types and whatnot, and made regionals the center stage to compete, while scrapping nationals and making the ever so not-great continentals. Due to regionals being expanded tournaments, Pokemon has given their new format a big nod, and it has been thrust into the spotlight.

My question is: Is this something that could happen to a format like unlimited? Combining all sorts of cards from 20ish years could expand the game and provide a solution to the problem that players such as myself have: The game is too straightforward. Here's the steps i'd take to implement the change.

1. Create a ban list and ban everything under the sun that can T1 you, make undying combos (Mr. Mime + Floral Crown), or overall be unfair.

2. Make a tournament schedule announcement at the end of a given season to tell players about the changes, then start running smaller leagues or small tournaments using the unlimited format.

3. Inspect the metagame at some of these tournaments, then ban accordingly.

4. Expand tournaments, done!

Now of course it easier written than actually implemented, but I think unlimited could be cool to play, as there is so many cards to pick and chose from. What are your thoughts?

I imagine only a small amount of players have Base Set-era cards that aren't part of people's collections and would not be used for actual play. Also, due to power creep, no Pokemon from that era are viable anyway (or they wouldn't be, after the ban list you'd need). most of the broken combinations exist by using cards (Trainers) that were never meant to be used in tandem with each other.

Expanded has five years' worth of sets in it. It's as close to Unlimited as you're going to get, and even good Expanded decks rarely use cards from the oldest sets because they're nothing compared to what we have now (again, power creep).

Pretty much what @PMJ said. We'll see decks as they exist now, just with Base Set Trainer cards. Most people would play some Dark deck with Super/Energy Removal, computer search and recovery cards.
