Hi guys, this is my first report. I probably could've done a States report but every time I tried to write it something came up >.< So here's my Report!
I woke up after what was almost a sleepless night at 1:30am showered had so breakfast (power bar, milk and egg roll.) then Briaah and me jumped into the car for a long 4 and a half hour drive down to Philadelphia. I was feel pretty confident about my deck, as it was doing very well in testing last night (I was like X-0 or X-1 in my playtcg matches.) here's the list, I don't mind posting it:
Pokemon: 16
2x Zekrom BLW/NXD
2x Mewtwo EX NXD
3x Tynamo NVI 39
1x Tynamo NVI 38
3x Eelektrik NVI
2x Thundurus EPO
1x Shaymin UL
1x Tyrogue HS
1x Zekrom EX
T/S/S: 31
4x Pokemon Collector
3x PONT
3x Juniper
3x N
2x Sage's
4x Junk Arm
3x Catcer
2x PlusPower
2x Level Ball
2x Eviolite
2x Switch
1x Super Rod
Energy: 13
9x Electric Energy
4x DCE
yeah a fairly standard list, but without Pokegear 3.0, I teched really hard for the mirror expecting to be playing Mirror matches all day. I was hoping that my deck would do well enough to get me to top cut (or at least win me something.) so lets see how it did.
Tournament Registration etc.
Briaah and I walked into the room and registered getting these really cool dice/coin at the same time! I filled out my decklist and we started waiting for Glaceon (he was going to give my sister a mew prime to finish her deck.) about 30-15min before it was time to start she was worried that he might of passed us (we were right behind the registration tables) so I said I would but a mew and loan it to her. I got up and walked to the place where they sold individual cards, got a mew and came back. However that evil glacy was there just as I came back >:O (lol well he wasn't evil but the timing was hilarious.) anyways the Seniors sat down for a players meetup and Glaceon and me had a for fun battle (at which he scooped because he didn't wanna play zekeels I think...) so I loaned him 3 dual balls for his CMT deck and the pairings for Round 1 came up. There was around 100 Seniors with 7 Rounds and a top cut of 16.
Round 1 vs. Melina S. w/ Theme deck
This was an epic battle that I almost lost!... Actually her deck was out of rotation and she didn't want to use the theme deck they gave her, so she dropped.
1-0
Okay so I was 1-0 I didn't really get a chance to test my deck out so I wasn't sure what to think.....
Round 2 vs Jaron K. w/ reuniclus/Zekrom/Regigigas rogue deck
I go first and top decked a collector I played it to grab 2 tynamo and a zekrom I believe. His setup was extremely slow as I was able to ko almost any of his pokemon (excluding his zekrom that he played eviolite onto in the first turn.) later I found out he didn't have a mewtwo (because I was forced to play a mewtwo to OHKO his regigigas and he never countered.) so I went arggo mewtwo and won pretty much ran him over. He later showed me that he had all 3 of his dousion prized.
2-0
Okay so far no Zekeels…… I’ve seen plenty of them all around me, but I haven’t played any yet…
Round 3 vs. Trevor S. w/ CMT
I was pretty nervous when going against this guy because I knew he had CMT with him, a deck I didn’t test very well against. Anyways I get to go first again however both of our setups are slow. He gets a smergal out and copies my N in hand before things really get going. He had a problem with dual balls, he was hitting tails most of the time and had to waste many Junk Arm to get the pokemon he needed. I on the other hand was struggling to get more than one eel out, eventually we get into a mewtwo war at which I have the upper hand, I ko his last mewtwo with my own leaving me at 1 prize and him at 2, next turn he didn’t get anything and I retreated mewtwo to the bench to keep him safe. It was then he played down shaymin EX, used forest breath, catchered mewtwo, and played a juniper. He had about 20-30 cards left in his deck and all he had to do was draw 1 energy and the game was over, He whiffed on the energy! I then played my shaymin UL and moved my energy to zekrom EX, and retreated mewtwo for the ko. He flipped over his prizes and saw that game changing DCE, gg
3-0
I’m pretty pleased with myself and the deck at this moment knowing that if I win my next 2 matches I should make the cut, but no zekeels. Like I said they were all around me, but never against me. At this point we stop for lunch break and I eat a Dunkin Doughnuts sandwich and get some fresh air. I come back just as the next round pairings are posted.
Round 4 vs. Jimmy P. w/ Zekeels
Finally a zekeels matchup! Turns out that I was at one of the top tables right now and everyone was using zekeels (a couple had CMT and one kid had donphan/mewtwo). I soon learn however that this guy had around 40 CP and that is more than triple the amount I had. I said to myself that CP wasn’t what decided a game, but I was still worried.
I go first yet again but he seems to be able to setup way faster, forcing me to start a mewtwo war. I’m winning the mewtwo war when he plays zapdos, charges it up with 3 energy, and takes a ko on my benched tynamo. I counter by attaching to mewtwo and used x-ball for 120. Unfortunately he had a catcher in hand and was able to catcher ko my shay for his last prize, leaving me with a 1-0 loss in prizes. Apparently though (according to Glaceon) Jimmy won the whole thing so it’s cool that I lost to the winner I guess.
3-1
At this point I was a little worried I didn’t want to lose next match as it would look horrible on my resistance. The next round pairings were up and I was ready to go, determined no to lose.
Round 5 vs. Anik B. w/ Donphan/Mewtwo
First off she was a 2-2 so I was down paired, secondly she was using some sort of fighting deck (I sat next to her at round 1) which made me nervous.
She goes first and starts setting up a donphan storm while I try to spam mewtwo. I do however manage to get 2 Eelektrik out so that was something, but she continually catcher ko’s my eels, Tynamo, and Tyrouge for cheap prizes and 3hko’s one of my mewtwo. At this point I knew she had 2 mewtwo in her hand from a collector and she had one prize left to take. Had I an N I could easily mount a comeback as 3 of her catchers were in the discard along with 2-3 Junk Arm, but alas I didn’t have any so I settled for a Juniper and off of Juniper I got N, I used x-ball and hoped she didn’t have Junk arm in her hand. She drew, played Junk Arm, and catchered my last eelektrik for the game.
3-2
At this point my hopes and dream started to get crushed as I realized that I would have to win my next to matches against good opponents to make the cut.
Round 6 vs. ? w/ CaKE + Vileplume
I get to go first with my thundurus to his kyurem. I’m off to a somewhat shaky start until he uses energymite for zero energy, after that I’m able to charge up a zekrom EX and strong volt for several turns in a row putting him in a prize deficit he just couldn’t come back from.
4-2
Okay so round 6 results were posted and I was in 30th place (the only 6-0 was Cybertron) I thought to myself “if I’m paired with one of the highest 4-2’s or a 5-1 and win I might just make cut” The pairing for the final rounds of swiss were posted and I went to my match.
Round 7 FINAL ROUND vs. Christopher E. w/ CMT
Okay so it was another CMT deck. I don’t like CMT just in case you don’t know, but I’d put up with anything to make cut so CMT it was. I draw 7 cards and am forced to start with a lone tynamo, and he goes first. I immediately start thinking about the donk and pray he doesn’t start with a tyrogue/Celebi/Mewtwo + Plus power.
We flip over the cards and he starts with a regigigas, he attached a DCE, played down used dual ball to grab celebi, and played Juniper. All he needed was an energy, a switch, and another switch/SAB and the game was over. He got the Skyarrow and energy, but whiffed the switch, so it was my turn. I didn’t have collector in my hand, so I was using an oak/N/Juniper every turn until I go one. Some how off the Oak I was able to grab level ball and used it on Tyrogue so I could start attacking. He catcher ko’d some of my pokemon, but I eventually got a collector and started rolling. I’m able to ko his regigigas, but he’s only 1 prize away from winning while I have to take 4. so play down zekrom EX, charge up the EX, then N him down to 1 card and ko mewtwo for 2 prizes. He then promotes his second mewtwo and is forced to pass. I have a junk arm in hand but decide to save it rather than bring back something like plus power so I can catcher mewtwo if it comes to it. I play down my shaymin and move enough energy onto zekrom EX for a strong Volt but decide to use glinting claw instead (for 80.) he sees that I have enough energy to win next turn if he leaves mewtwo active, so he plays switch onto his celebi, Forest breaths a third energy onto his tornadus, retreats to tornadus, and hits zekrom for 60 (he had eviolite on him). I drew, then played junk arm catcher for game. He was a really nice opponent and I really enjoyed our battle, gg man that was an awesome battle!
5-2
Now all the rounds of swiss were over and the results were posted. I came in 21st place out of around 100 which isn’t bad but I missed cut by only 5 places! So close…. I turned out that Christopher was the lowest 4-2 before we battled, which I feel wasn’t right, they should’ve given all 4-2 a fair chance of bubbling by placing the best with the worst (that way if the lowest 4-2, in this case Chris, won he would have a much higher chance of making the cut) and the same rules would apply for all the 4-2’s including myself. Ah well I guess I’m just ranting now =P I did get 7 packs and bagged myself 2 CP so the day wasn’t a flop at all, I also bought a Reshi EX tin and got some really sweet pulls from that.
What I Learned:
Well even though zekeels was popular at Philly I only faced 1 and lost to it despite the fact that I used cards specifically to counter it. Zekrom EX was the VIC (Very Important Card) for me and I might try going for two. I will most like pull 1 normal zekrom as I almost never used it and his damage output is too low I may also pull a plus power for a level ball/consistency card. I also learned that shaymin is a useful little critter and I wouldn’t give him up easily in my list. Tyrogue was useful but never gave me a donk, which was disappointing. This all may be common knowledge to you guys, but to me this will really help my performance at battle roads if I take zekeels (although I’ll probably just run mageels before it gets rotated.)
Props:
-Coming in 21st place
-Pulling a secret rare Zoroark AND a Mewtwo EX in just 9 ND packs
-Meeting Glaceon, Afro-G, Adam, (from 6P) and Zangoose (although I didn’t know it was him at the time because he wasn’t wearing his glasses o’ doom when I saw him ;o )
-Going to the States of NJ and PA for the first time in my life
-Getting valuable tournament experience!
-The Judges for a smooth tournament that went faster than I thought it would.
-Getting these really cool Dice/Coin/promo card! (that’s a mouthful, lol)
Slops:
-missing the cut by 5 places
-first and last year I’ll be able to go to Regionals as a Senior
-4 ½ hrs car drive there and back (round trip of about 9hrs >.< )
-not meeting Alexmf2 (I Think I sat right next to him, AGAIN D: ) and others
-my last hope of getting to nats slipped away (although I have more than 10 play! Points)
Thanks for Reading! I hope to be back at Battle Roads with yet another report, See ya then!
