If a card or move, i.e. driftblims wind wave, allows you to move supporters from discard pile to deck. Can you only return current supporters, or old trainer cards that are supporters also?

yes, you can return Supporters in te name of DP or Trainers Supportes of the others expantions.
OK as long as it says Supporter on the card you can return it.
You can not get back the supporter you played this turn.
Why? because that card is not technically discarded until the end of your turn after you attack
