Ruling Switch: Using Older Card

I have a few of the delta species switch cards but only 1 kalos switch to use irl.
My understanding is the text has to be exactly the same although the mechanics of each card does the same. The only discrepancy is the delta card saying "1 of" where as this part is removed in the newer standard card. You cant have 2 active pokemon anyways.....can I use the delta version in tournament play?

Yes. The text doesn't have to be exactly the same, but there are some cards that got reprints that you can't play the retro of due to wording. Like how you can't play the old Computer Search because it doesn't say Ace Spec.

Awesome. In that case, if I used the retro cards do I need to have a newer one on hand to reference? I sort of remember reading it somewhere but maybe it was at a judges or leagues discrepancy.

Reference cards are also required if a card has had a significant enough text change for one to be necessary. (For example, Super Potion.)
