If I have switch from before BW1, is it played as an item card? thanks!

Yes. Re-prints are always played as their most current release, unless an errata says otherwise. (Such as with EXP. Share). So Switch is always considered an item card, even if you use one from say, EX Dragon Frontiers.

...Switch has always been treated as an Item card ever since Base Set, so I'm not sure why anything would be changed.

I thought the term 'Item' was introduced in Black & White. In Base Set, Switch was just a Trainer. However it would now be considered an Item, do to ruling changes.

My point being is that Switch isn't a Supporter or a Stadium, and has been functionally played as an Item ever since it was introduced to the game.

Technically yes DNA, however since the term "item" did not even exist before BW, Switch was technically played as a Trainer then, not as an item, which is where the question comes from.
