I'd like to start out by saying this was my first cities I'd been too. And the first time I made top cut, first time doing anything near this good. Mom was so proud. (Sarcasm.) Anyway, let's get on to my day.
I went with SleepingSnorlax who was judging and xXLANTURNPRIMEXx. I look at his deck and think I'm screwed, he's playing Donphan, I'm playing Magnezone. Anyway we get there mostly before everyone else, because Snorlax had to be there early (Judging, remember?) and it was held at a local card shop which is always cool. We hang out for awhile after registration and deck checks. When the first round starts, I found my seat and started playing.
My list:
3 Thundurus EP
1 Tornadus EP
4-2-3 Magnezone TR
3-3 Eelektrik NV
T/S/S (26)
3 Rare Candy
1 Super Rod
4 Junk Arm
4 Pokemon Communication
3 Pokemon Catcher
2 Engineer's Adjustments
2 Sage's Training
4 Pokemon Collector
3 N
ENERGY (15)
15 Lightning
ROUND 1
Andrew with Samurott, Zebstrika, and Zekrom
I had no idea how his deck worked, and no idea how he did the rest of the tournament. Our match was really short. I start Thundurus, and Tynamo. He starts 2 Oshawotts. I got first with Collector, grabbing another Tynamo and 2 Magnemite, bench them all, attach a Lightning to Thundurus and Charge. His turn he attaches a water, plays a Duel Ball for double heads and grabs a Blitzle and a Zekrom. He Tackles for 10. My turn, I evolve into Eelektrik, and play N. I get the Candy for the Zone, and Magnetic draw for the energy I needed to attach to Thundurus. Disaster Volt for the first prize. His turn, he promotes Zekrom. He candies his benched Oshawott into Samurott, attaches a DCE to it and passes. My turn, I Dynamotor onto Magnezone, attach to Thundurus, and play a Sage's. Got the Catcher and KOed his Samurott with Disaster Volt. His turn he draw passes. My turn, I catcher his Blitzle, and KO. His turn was another draw pass. I retreat Thundurus, and Lost Burn 3 energy to knock out his Lone Zekrom.
1-0
ROUND 2
Christian with Cobalion and Accelgor
Again, another deck that made no sense to me, but hey he did win his first round. I don't remember this round very well. I think I catered him 4 times in a row (with Junk Arm support) and eventually he just scooped. Thundurus FTW.
2-0
ROUND 3
Johnathan with ZPST
Finally a deck I could somewhat predict. I'm so glad I played this deck because with catcher I could knock out 3 of the 4 main basics with Thundurus. And that's pretty much how this game goes. He starts with Tornadus and I start Thundurus. I go first. I attach and communicate for a magnemite, then play an N. he showed me his hand and I'm really glad I used N before his first turn. He had a collector, switch and three Lightning Energy, so he could have Bolt Striked on his first turn. (something like that.) Anyway I play a Tynamo, and then Charge. He plays a collector to grab two Zekrom, and a Pachi. He plays the Zekrom, then the Pachi with 2 Energy then plays shaymin, moves 1 Lightning to Zekrom, and the other to Tornadus. He attaches a DCE, and uses Hurricane, moving the Lightning to Zekrom. My turn, I get the candy Zone, collector for antoher Thundurus, Magnemite and Tynamo. I magnetic Draw into 2 Eels so that's good. The game bassically comtinues with me catchering his techs and eventually lost zoneing 3 energy on a Zekrom for my 6th prize.
3-0
ROUND 4
Zack with ZPST
I was hoping I would play him, he's a friend, and he's playing a deck I felt pretty good going against considering I just beat the same deck last round. I won't get into this game very much, but I will say Zack had me more scared of the Donk than Johnathan did, but this game went almost identically the same, I catchered all his techs and Disaster Volted him and sent up Magnezone to sweep the Zekroms. Very fun playing him.
4-0
ROUND 5
Ernie with Chandelure with Vileplume
I had a feeling I would lose this round, because I had a tendency to do poorly against Vileplume variants. And of course he goes first, with a collector, and passes with an active Litwick, another on the bench and 2 Oddish and a Doduo. My turn I topdeck a Collector and get my 2 tynamo and a magnemite. I attach to my active thundurus and charge. His turn HE GET'S THE CANDY VILEPLUME. I almost rage quit, but I knew it would be at least another 2 turns until he got a Chandy out. He evolves his benched Litwick into Lampent and passes. My turn I evolve into Magneton, and an Eel. I use a sages, got the energy and another Eel. I evolve attach and Disaster Volt his Litwick.
He sends up his Lampent, evolves and looks mad because he can't really one shot anything on my field even with two Chandys. he puts 3 on Thundurus, plays a litwick and passes. My turn I play Engineer's, and get the Magnezone. I Dynamotor twice onto it, and retreat my Thundurus to it, I used my turns attached Energy, an energy on Magnezone and another on Thundurus to KO Chandy. He promotes his Vileplume, probably thinking I couldn't OHKO it. He evolves into Lampent, and passes. LOL I DREW AN ENERGY. I attach it to Zone, play my last sages to gt 2 energy in my discard pile, and dynamotor. Knocked out his Plume, YAY. He sends up his Dodrio, probably hoping he could get out his second Chandy but can't. He tries to retreat Dodrio but I remind him Retreat Aid only works if Dodrio is on the bench, and at that point he scoops. Said he'd be wasting both our time if he continued.
5-0
I'm the only undefeated Master at this point which is weird, I've never done this good before.
ROUND 6
Charlie with Typhlosion with Magnezone
This deck kept me on my toes, and I really wish I had the Typhlosion Prime to build it. This deck outsped me, dealt more damage and I don't remember ever playing such a great game, I'd post about the match but I don't know if he would be okay with me telling you how his deck worked. He won, although it was a very close game.
5-1
TOP CUT
I come in the third seed, Charlie (my sixth round opponent) came in first. This is how our Top Cut was:
Magnezone with Typhlosion
Chandelure with Vileplume
Magnezone with Eelektrik (ME!)
Chandelure with Vileplume and Cobalion
Reshiphlosion
ZPST
Reshiphlosion
(the guy in eighth place dropped right after Top Cut was announced. The guy in first seed got a bye.)
I'm not going to get into how my top cut matches went play by play. The match ups were pretty straight forward.
TOP CUT ROUND 1
David with Reshiphlosion
Really nice guy, had a good convo with him before the game. I won both games in kind of one sided matches. I was surprised how cool I was being, I wasn't nervous in the slightest, despite my first time being in top cut. Fun games, but never really thought I pick up a loss.
7-1
TOP CUT ROUND 2
Johnathan with ZPST
Played him in swiss, and beat him pretty easily. Top cut matches with him weren't as easy but I still didn't have a problem with winning. I won both games with a few minutes to spare. At the last turn in the 2nd game I used an N when we both had one prize card left. He didn't get the energy he needed to knock out my Magnezone, and I felt pretty good about that. After the match he congratulated me and wished me luck in the top two.
TOP CUT ROUND 3
Charlie with Typhlosion and Magnezone
This was the only guy I lost to all day and I had to play him in Top 2? OUCH. He had the intimidation factor. Both games were incredibly fun. I hate to say that he won both games, but I ain't even mad. I always have great games playing Charlie. Both games were close, and the judges (Captain Pidgey and SleepingSnorlax) got really into it. This was the only guy I could have lost to and been okay with it. Great game, really enjoyed it.
I got 2nd at my first cities, and the first time I've ever written here. Sorry if it was a boring read and if I didn't explain enough or too much. Got my 5 Champ points, and my City's pack supplies haven't come in yet so I get my 10 packs next weekend.
PROPS:
Great, fun games.
Second at my first Cities.
Finding a use for Thundurus.
NOT PLAYING DONPHAN.
Selling random cards and getting $63. NICE.
SLOPS:
Made a misplay in Top 2, Judges said if I didn't retreat, I probably could have won.
Waiting a week for my packs. (Not complaining, I understand.)
Thanks for reading, I hope it won't be my last Cities Report!
