Hello PokeBeach. I'm glad to be back at my first competitive TCG Tournament since Nationals of 2010, where Diamond and Pearl sets were legal. Due to me going out of town, school, sports, and even a funeral, I've had to miss every single competitive TCG event since then. I've kept up at league and such, I've just been extremely unlucky when it comes to the dates of competitive events. Anyways, here's my first tournament report in years. (literally.)
Pregame
So I decided on ZeeKEels for the tournament because of my lack of resources, therefore not being able to acquire a Darkrai EX before the tourney. I wasn't able to run ZoroSwarm like I wanted to . My list looked something like this:
There were some other cards, but I swapped my list before I wrote this, and I can't remember offhand. After testing at league on Friday, I felt kind of confident, but I wasn't expecting to Top Cut because I haven't played a competitive event in 2 years. A plethora of players showed up from Chicago and Minneapolis, so I was excited for the diversity. Anyways, I get registered, pairings go up, and off I am for the first time in 2 years!
Pregame- day 2
I showed up about an hour early after editing my ZeekEels list. Now the list was literally just Zekrom and Eels along with some Smeargle. The goal was basically get a turn 2 zekrom 9/10 times, and it pretty much did just that. Pairings for masters go up, top 4 cut, and were off once again!
Round 1 VS Yoshi T w/ Mew/Accelgor/random nonsense that wouldn't work if anybody except Yoshi tried playing it
The Goal of Yoshi's deck is to put Accelgor into the Lost Zone, and then use Deck and Cover with Mew and DCE. Vileplume locks trainers, Chandelure makes it so every time poison kills me, it's going back to his turn so I never get to attack. Unfortunately, Yoshi prized three, yes THREE Mew Primes this game. I just set up Zekrom and killed things.
1-0
Round 2 vs Phil H w/ ReshiPhlosion
Phil's opening wasn't very stellar. Unfortunately, mine wasn't either. I had Smeargle, but he didn't have any supporters in his hand, therefore, I didn't have any supporters in my hand. We both just Drew, attatched, and passed turns for a while until I finally powered up a Zekrom manually. I hit a Juniper off of my Prize Cards and just started to sweep from there. We played a fun match afterwards which he won due to me prizing 2 Zekroms
2-0
Round 3 vs Jordyn B w/ Durant
I set up a Zekrom, 2 Eels, and a Smeargle with Skyarrow Bridge in play. Eventually, I got 2 energies on Both Eelectrics, so it didn't matter whether or not he catchered. I think he prized a Durant, because I don't think he ever devoured for 4 cards total. I got Zekrom set up and started killing things. He did manage to pull a surprise KO by attatching a Prism energy to his Rotom, but I was only delayed rather than full out stalled. I set up a second Zekrom, and Bolt Striked 6 ants for the game.
3-0
Round 4 vs Alex H w/ Entei swarm
turn 1, he draws, attatches a fire to his lone active Entei EX, and passes. I draw, play Smeargle, Switch my Zekrom, and Portrait for nothing in his hand. I attatch a {L} and pass. He draws, topdecks a PONT, and gets 6 new cards. He benches an Entei, attatches, and hits me for 30 + burn. I draw, retreat, switch back out to Smeargle, and Portrait only to find he didn't hit any supporters off of his PONT. >__< At this point, he just attatched a 3rd Energy to Entei along with an Eviolite, and just started using Grand Flame for KO's. I didn't hit a PONT until he only had 2 prizes left. I never thought I'd lose a match because my opponent didn't draw any supporters :\
3-1
Round 4 vs Alex B w/ ZeekEels
My opening hand is complete garbage, which isn't good knowing that if I lose I'm probably out of top cut. He gets a ridiculous start and starts killing things almost instantly. I just keep pushing up things to stall until I finally topdeck a Juniper. I manage to get 2 Eels and a Zekrom set up, but he's already 3 prizes ahead. We start to trade prizes at this point, but since he's already so far ahead, there's nothing I can do to grab the win. I melt down from a great 3-0 opening to probably not making top cut.
3-2
At this point, top 4 is going to be Alex, Yoshi, Mike L who played Tornadus/Darkrai, and Chad S who played Terrakion. Unfortunately for Chad, he had a family obligation and was forced to leave before he could play in Top Cut. He dropped, wished me luck as I was in 5th place with the best resistance, and I gave my deck to the judge. Everything checked out, pairings go up, and I get a rematch to try and redeem myself.
Top 4 vs Alex B w/ ZeekEels
We flip the coin, and he is going first. He gets another ridiculous start and has a turn 2 fully-powered Zekrom EX with a bench of Smeargle, 2 Eels, and a regular Zekrom with an energy. He used Zekrom EX to get 2 Prize Cards early before I kill it and tie the game up. Much like the last round, we trade prize cards until the very end where he pulls the win off 1-0. It's literally "Bolt Strike KO. Bolt Strike KO. Plus power, Bolt Strike KO" back and forth all game. I'd love to give you a blow-by-blow report, but you don't really need one
Game two I elect to go first. (obviously.) He opens a lone Mewtwo EX to my lone Tynamo. Thankfully, I play 2 Level Balls to get a Smeargle and another Tynamo out. I portrait his hand for Collector, and get 2 Zekroms and a 3rd Tynamo. I attatch and pass turn. He attatches DCE, plays Catcher for a Tynamo, Junipers, and X-balls for the KO. Even when I go first, I still fail to get the 1st prize card. Since I didn't play Mewtwo myself, I was forced to attack with Bolt Strike Zekrom, so his Mewtwo gets a second prize card with X-ball before it goes down. Again, very boringly and anticlimactically, it's literally "PlusPower, Bolt Strike KO. Bolt Strike KO." all game until the very end. when it's 2-1 in Prizes, his lead, I get a Zekrom with Eviolite on it, power it up, and Bolt Strike for the KO. At this point, if he has Catcher or PlusPower he wins, if not, I win because I have Catcher in my hand, so I'm free to kill an Eel. Alex plays Juniper and hits the Catcher for the game that puts him into top 2.
Top 2 is Mike L vs Alex. Mike L prevails as the Battle Roads victor with Tornadus EX/Darkrai EX, but Alex pulls Tornadus EX in his packs. Mike pulls Kyogre EX and literally just gives it away for free. He makes the statement of "If I didn't have a full page of Kyogres already, I probably would have kept it." I just chuckle, I felt kinda bad for him. Although having too many EX's is a good problem to have. I pulled junk out of the 2 boosters I won for taking 4th. I still haven't won any Championship Points, so maybe they'll come later. It was good to play in some battle roads, now I actually know what to expect for some future tournaments.
Props:
Chad for giving me his spot in Top Cut
ZeekEels
Not winning with only donks this time
Smeargle for being boss
Mike L for being absolutely hilarious in top cut
Eli for being Eli
Yoshi also for being funny in Top Cut
First top cut (even though I technically didn't deserve it) in 2 years
Max Potion
Poor/Quality deckbuilding
Slops:
Smeargle for sucking
Bad packs that I won
Not having much money, so my lunch was Mike + Ikes
Prizing 3 Mews round 1
Chad for not being able to play it out. I honestly think he at lest would have made the finals
Not being able to win for Chad
Alex getting Jesus starts against me, although if it happens 3 games in a row I'm sure it is more than just luck.
Pregame
So I decided on ZeeKEels for the tournament because of my lack of resources, therefore not being able to acquire a Darkrai EX before the tourney. I wasn't able to run ZoroSwarm like I wanted to . My list looked something like this:
3-3 Eelectric
2 Zekrom
1 Zekrom EX
2 Tornadus (wasn't able to get Tornadus EX, but it's still better than nothing for Terrakion.)
1 Shaymin UL

4 Juniper
3 Sage's
3 level Ball
3 Junk arm
3 Catcher

There were some other cards, but I swapped my list before I wrote this, and I can't remember offhand. After testing at league on Friday, I felt kind of confident, but I wasn't expecting to Top Cut because I haven't played a competitive event in 2 years. A plethora of players showed up from Chicago and Minneapolis, so I was excited for the diversity. Anyways, I get registered, pairings go up, and off I am for the first time in 2 years!
Round 1
Sean W (ZeekEels) vs Andrew/Alex H (Darkrai/Klingklang/Groudon, I can't remember which name it was. :x)
My opening hand is attrocious. Tynamo, Tynamo, Junk Arm, and 4 {L}. He goes first, starts a Smeargle, portraits (for nothing ), plays a Juniper from his own hand, Dark Patches to a benched Darkrai EX, and attatches a basic {D} for his turn, and then ends. I topdeck a Random Receiver, and hit Juniper off of it. Unfortunately, the only supporter I hit is Pokémon Collector. I use Ultra Ball to get a Zekrom, attatch to it, retreat my 30 HP Tynamo for Zekrom, and pass. Andrew/Alex attatches to his Darkrai, portraits my Collector for 2 Klings and a Groudon. At this point I was like "crap." He plays a skyarrow to free retreat, and uses Night Spear to hit Zekrom for 90 and my benched Tynamo for the KO. I draw, evolve Tynamo, play Collector for 2 Tornadus and a Shaymin. I attatch to Zekrom and use Outrage for 110. At this point, he rare candies into Klingklang, and starts dropping Prism Energies and Rainbow Energies everywhere. whenever I damage a Groudon or a Darkrai, he simply free retreats, uses Shift Gear, and attacks. I eventually play around to the point where he has 1 card in his hand, and my Tornaduses have him locked down. The only supporter I have is N. Instead of playing it to refresh his hand, I junk arm it away for Random Receiver, and hit another N. -__-. I refuse to play it, but he topdecks a PONT anyways :\ From there, he just free retreated and swept as he saw fit. I conceded after I was down 5-2 with no energies in play. GG
0-1
Round 2
Sean W (ZeekEels) vs Chad S (Virizion/Terrakion/Shaymin)
I start a lone Zekrom ex but have a collector AND a juniper, and go first. I attatch a Lightning, play Collector for Tynamo, Zekrom, Tornadus, and pass. He has a lone Virizion, uses Double Draw, and pass. I juniper, discarding a {L}, and I hit DCE, Eel, and Celebration Wind Shaymin. I use Strong Volt for the game. We played a fun match afterwards, and he catchered me to death for 5 prizes when I just kept using Thundurus :x
1-1
Round 3
Sean W (ZeekEels) vs somebody whos name I forgot (Darkrai Swarm)
I start Zekrom EX and 30 HP tynamo going 2nd. I put up the Tynamo obviously, but he gets a Turn 2 Darkrai and Catchers the EX active. By turn 3 I'm down 3 Prizes with no energies on anybody important. I play it out for a bit, but I end up going down 5-1 and I just conceed.
1-2
Round 4
Sean W (ZeekEels) vs Some random dude with some random deck
I never got to find out what he played. I start a lone Thundurus to his lone Fliptini, I go first. I attatch, use Charge, and he just draws and passes. I attatch and use Disaster Volt for the game.
2-2
Lunch Break
3 slices of pizza for 5 bucks is pretty awesome. My friend buys 6 Dark Explorers packs and pulls nothing, so I buy 3 and pull a Full Art Groudon EX which I managed to trade away later. Otherwise I just found out how everybody else did. My friend Devin made top cut in Seniors going 4-0 with ReshiPhlosion, Yoshi was 3-1 with a random mew/accelgor/vileplume/chandelure deck. Alex was also 3-1 at this point with his own ZeekEels.
Round 5
Sean W (ZeekEels) vs Mike L (Darkrai/Mewtwo???)
I was up-paired against a 3-1 for this match which made my opponent very unhappy. I don't know what this guy ran either, all I saw all game was a Darkrai EX and 2 Mewtwo EX. I remember he dropped a Mewtwo + eviolite early on, which was a play mistake because I only needed a catcher or an energy to knock it out, as I had a Mewtwo in my hand with an Eel on the bench. but I wiffed on both. He uses N, and I wiff on both again. I stuck this one out with just Zekrom and Thundurus as long as I could, but I could not draw anything to kill the Mewtwo EX and possibly get some momentum. I conceded pretty early on as I had nothing to go off of. i felt bad for my opponent, as being downpaired meant he took 5th overall
Final Record: 2-3
Not too bad for my first premeir event in 2 years. I didn't lose the majority of my games on play mistakes as I often have in the past, so I was pretty happy with myself. I stuck around and edited my list to make it more speed-oriented, although if anybody has a fix for the list above, feel free to shoot me a PM. Hopefully I can use this tourney to help me get more prepared for nats!
A CMT deck ended up winning the Junior division. When I left, Devin with ReshiPhlosion was still playing somebody with ZeekEels in game 3 for the title of the Seniors division. Top cut for masters ended up being between a KlingKlang/Groudon/Darkrai deck (not one that I Played round 1) and a ZeekEels, but I left very early into that game, so I've no clue what happened.
Props:
Finally got to play at a premeir-rated event for the first time in 2 years.
Had fun.
Pulling Groudon EX
Trading Groudon EX for Raikou EX and $5
Tyson for helping me fix up my ZeekEels
Yoshi for loaning me Mewtwo EX
Devin for proving ReshiPhlosion is still around and a great deck to play.
Yoshi for running his random nonsense deck and top cutting with it
3 slices of pizza for $5
Other trades I accomplished during the tourney for things like RH Junk Arms and Ultra Ball
Not losing on misplays
Slops:
Alex for losing top cut in the last round going 3-2
Me forcing Mike L out of top cut because he got downpaired vs me
2-3. I hoped for 3-2, but given I haven't played at a "real" tournament in 2 years, it's not extremely depressing.
Still can't pull Tornadus EX or Darkrai EX
Me taking Terrakion out of my deck
Not being able to run ZoroSwarm
Having game 1 on lockdown and losing cos he topdecked a PONT
Only wins were donks
