The Art of an angry Viking

Hi guys!

To start with, I'd like to let you all know that I'm almost completely tech-illiterate. If I do anything wrong (and I do, often, even with a tutorial!) please correct me!

Right...I'm an artist my trade. I'm a British female tattoo apprentice in her early twenties with a Viking fixation and a passion for what I do! I specialise in beasties of the crazy, messed-up and mythological kind, and only work in traditional media (hence the tech-illiteracy, I don't and never will do any kind digital art at all). I work in graphite, charcoal, pastels (mostly chalk), chinagraph, ink and various paint types. I love a good challenge, and I like giving myself difficult things to do in order to better myself and push my work to higher levels. I take commissions from both people and various shops (at the moment I'm doing custom skateboards for a skate shop).

But why am I here? Because, as guilty a pleasure as it can be, I like to sometimes draw Pokemon in different styles, usually to take a break from whatever I'm doing. I don't draw anything but the monsters from the franchise, though, as I despise anime (these monsters are the one and only exception to the rule!). As my scanner is dead and my camera is questionable, I only have one Pokemon-related image onhand, and it's rather old. Here she be -

I've intergrated my own style into this one, and it's drawn solely with chinagraph marker (if you don't know what one of those is, it's like a cross between a wax crayon and an oil pastel, evil things they are!), just to make life hard for myself, and to see if I could pull it off. As I said before, It's a few years old, and it's not the best display of my skill. Here I have a few more recent creations of mine (the photo quality isn't the best...sorry!) -

This is my own semi-cartoony take on a Chinese Foo Dog. Graphite.

This is my take on a Kistune (demon fox) from Japanese mythology. Ink and coloured pencil.

Here's a cheeky little request piece based on the 'Ghost Saber' from World of Warcraft. Graphite.

A lion with a slightly lopsided face! Chinagraph marker.

I hope that these few images give you a little bit of an idea of what I do. If anyone's interested, I can post a link to my gallery up here so you can see the mess therein! I'm also open for requests and commissions, if any of you lovely chaps would like to give me something to do for fun! If there's any interest expressed, I'll post my rules up here (there aren't many at all, mostly the fact that I can't do anything too elaborate due to lack of time!).

I really hope you enjoy viewing my work! Thank you for taking the time to look, I appreciate it very much!

Very impressive style, Chanbob! I am technology illiterate as well (chuckles). You're a tattoo apprentice? That is pretty sweet. What year are you currently in?

I love the realism demonstrated in your artwork, it is amazing! I especially admire the detailing in your large cats; the lion is exceptionally well executed. I completely understand the frustrations of lopsided heads – I drew a cheetah once and its nose was askew. You have exemplary control of graphite, it is phenomenal! I admire how you can manipulate a myriad of materials; your knowledge is something to strive for.

I wish I was as good as you. I pretty much suck at realism...and everything else.

I look forward to witnessing more spectacular artwork. Excellent job!!

P.S. - Welcome to PokéBeach :)

Wow, that's some pretty amazing art, very well done. :] You may be "tech-illiterate" but I would choose to look at art done by hand any day rather than digital art, haha. I think my favorite out of all of those would have to be the Kistune. I just really love the style and all of the bright colors. So again, very impressive art and I hope to see you post more of it in the near future. :]

Thank you very much, Unique! I greatly appreciate your compliments, it means so much to me. Currently I'm almost at the end of my first year of apprenticing. I'm not technically with a studio per se...I have a mentor in a studio who is teaching me in a kind of informal set up until I can get a 'proper' position in another studio. I haven't tattooed anyone yet, it's all art refining and learning the hygiene side, as well as watching consultations and observing tattoos being executed. I'm in no rush though...I like to take things slow and thorough so I don't make any mistakes in the future! And hey, I bet you don't suck! Why not post some stuff up? Can't hurt!

EDIT - Just found your work on the forum! I don't know what you're talking about when you say you suck...your work is brilliant! I especially love the expression and stylisation on the Gyarados. Your inking is fantastic my friend, nothing beats nice, clean and bold inking! you should be very proud of your work indeed, keep drawing! :D

@Chanbob - You have an informal mentoring establishment, eh? That is incredible! I have faith that any tattoo studio would be lucky to have a phenomenal artist like you! I wish you the best of luck in the future with your career :)

You are too kind (T^T)

I greatly appreciate your comment, thank you so much! It is nice to know that my inking demonstrates a clean and bold stroke. Thanks again :)

These are all really sweet. Very very good artwork here!
You better keep it up! Post more! :]

Also, I'd like to give you a very warm welcome to pb! Let me know if you need anything.

Holy Cheese its, you are great. I really love how you styled the Entei, and I simply adore your big cats. They are just so detailed. I'm also jealous of all the tools that you can use (especially pastels). I have no talent beyond pencils and watercolors. Also, good luck with your apprenticing, I'm sure that you will be in a studio soon with your talent. You are excellent. :3

Btw Welcome to the beach, brah.

@ safariblade and SotH, Thank you so much! I appreciate your comments. I think I'll be posting some stuff in regard to the Fakemon contest soon, so we'll see how that goes! :)

I... you... that art...

Just starting with the Entei just overwhelemed me. The shading style is amazing and so much realism is captured in that single dynamic posture. You really have no idea how knowing you're going to post art here for the Beach just made my day.

I'm a British female tattoo apprentice...

Most tattoo artists (at least ones who I know in real life) are usually really good at sketching, drawing, etc. In all honesty, I would've been shocked if these weren't as excellently detailed as they are, after you mentioned you were a tattoo apprentice. These drawings are simply amazing! By all means, post more if you get a chance!

Oh wow I'm in love with that entei picture! You inspire me to try to recreate that book in the third pokemon movie! :) that picture would make a beast tattoo, literally! Lolz

*stares*

These are quite good, my friend.

I really like all the detail and shading! And that kitsune looks so... glowy!

Keep it up!
