Prologue: I'll See You Again!

The girl fidgeted a little in her seat on her bed. She fingered the PokéBalls in her pocket.

Today is the day.

She looked up at her ceiling, then out her window, where younger kids ran around in the streets. Vaniville was soaking in the light of the dawn, the pale brown streets shining.

The girl stood up, her long brown hair shining in the sunlight of a new day. A new beginning.

She glanced over at where Flare was asleep on the floor. The Fennekin’s golden coat moved slightly with each breath he took.

The girl hesitated, looking at him sadly. I’ll miss him. So much… But… it’s not like I’ll never see him again. She leaned down and gently shook him awake. “Flare… It’s time to wake up.” she whispered.

The Fennekin’s eyes slowly opened and he blinked sleepily, his bright eyes reflecting the sunlight like fire. Flare stood up and stretched, yawning. His ears twitched as he remembered what today was. He looked at his Trainer sadly.

“Yes, I know, I’ll miss you too.” She said. “But it’s not like we’ll never see each other. I won’t be gone forever.”

Flare leaped up into his Trainer’s arms and barked. “Fenn! Fenne!” The girl knew that look. “Why? Why can’t I come, too?”

She sighed and put him down. “I’ve already told you, Flare. I know we’ll see each other when I get back, and I already promised to call you a lot.” Flare lowered his head and gave a pouty face. Giving another sigh, the girl walked over to her bedroom door. “I’ve already made up my mind, and you agreed, Flare. Let’s go.” She left the room, her friend trotting along behind her.

Humming and water running reached her ears as they descended the stairs. Mom’s probably preparing a big goodbye breakfast.

A soft thump resounded as she skipped the last few steps. Not wanting any food, the girl tried to walk as quietly as possible to the door, hopefully her mother wouldn’t—

Her mom was at the door in an instant, wrapping her daughter in a strangling hug. The girl grunted and tried to pull away, but it was futile. Eventually the hug ended. “Skyleaf, you didn’t think you could leave without saying goodbye, did you?” Her mother frowned, but there was a hint of a smile playing at the corners of her mouth.
Skyleaf grinned. “No, probably not. I knew you would catch me.” Her mother looked at Flare, who was sitting behind his Trainer. “So are you going to Sycamore’s now?” she asked. “Yup.” The girl started to leave again, this time succeeding. “Have a good time in Hoenn!!” her mother called after her. The young Trainer turned back and waved. Her mother shut the door.

“PokéBall, go!” The shout rang across the laboratory. Multiple red-and-white spheres sailed into the air and erupted with a bright white flash. The lights solidified into many Pokémon: Lucario, Gardevoir, Absol, Pangoro, and Helioptile.

Skyleaf looked at her partners standing across from her, and Flare standing next to her. Kara, Patronus, Sabrai, Gondor, Summer. Her friends… that she would leave behind.

“Ahh, magnifique!” A rich, deep voice congratulated her. She turned towards Professor Sycamore and smiled. “Thank you, sir! But it was their choice to join me.” Sycamore smiled at her, lines wrinkling his young face. “Humble as always, I see. It’s good, you know, sometimes when Trainers get strong Pokémon, they become self-centered.” He winked at her. Kara walked over and clapped her Trainer on the back. “Lu Lucar!” “But not this one!”

The Professor laughed. “She’s getting better at telepathy, isn’t she!” “Yup!” Skyleaf said proudly. Kara just blushed and scratched the back of her head, her aura-telepathy communicating gratitude for the praise. The Professor grinned. “We’ll sure be having fun for the next few months, won’t we?”

Skyleaf looked at the ground. She knew she had already made up her mind, but… it was still hard to leave them at Sycamore’s lab while she was gone. Her Pokémon walked, floated, and scampered over to her. They comforted her so much. How could she go on without them?

Sycamore walked over to them. “I understand your sadness. So do your Pokémon. But this shows the bond you have with them. All of you know you’ll meet again, and that’s what matters.” Skyleaf nodded, blinking back the tears that were threatening to waterfall from her eyes.

“Th...Thank you for taking care of them, sir.” She stuttered. She turned and walked towards the door.

Skyleaf was suddenly tackled and squeezed, being lifted in the air by Kara. “Not without one last hug.” Summer ran over and jumped up onto her Trainer’s shoulder, running in and out of her hair before hugging Skyleaf’s neck with her tiny yellow arms. Skyleaf was released from Kara’s grasp, only to receive a gentle hug from Patronus while Sabrai head-butted her Trainer’s leg. The final hug came when she was lifted off her feet into Gondor’s massive gray arms. He hugged his Trainer, his love for her shown clearly. Flare scampered up Gondor’s legs to sit on top of Skyleaf. He began licking her face and continued until Gondor put her down.

Skyleaf was filled with gratitude and love for her Pokémon, who understood and accepted her decision. No one else in the world knew her as well as they did. “Thank you! I’ll call you every once in a while!!” she managed to say before bursting into tears and running from the lab. But these were not sad tears; they were tears of joy, of knowing they’d meet again.

Skyleaf sat on the plane, her thoughts wandering. Her bag twitched in the seat beside her, then went still. “One minute to liftoff. Destination: Petalburg, Hoenn.” The operator’s voice called over the loudspeakers. Skyleaf mentally confirmed that this was the place she wanted, then looked back out the window.

A faint cry made her look down at the ground, and saw her friends, her partners, her comrades, standing there waving at her with Sycamore. Flare and Summer jumped up and down, while Kara waved with both arms, grinning wide. Sycamore just smiled, looking at her. Skyleaf smiled, her heart rising as she waved to them.

“Takeoff now.” Flare was instantly blown into the air by the plane, Gondor snatching him out of the air. Everyone was laughing, even Skyleaf, as she watched her friends shrink and disappear as the plane rose into the sky.

RE: The Call of Adventure (Prologue is up!)

Hey, sorry for not critiquing sooner. This prologue is really interesting! Poor Skyleaf has to leave everyone behind :/ I liked how you were able to show the bond she has for her Pokemon, it's nice to see a happy moment in a sad prologue. I do have some tips for you, though:

In the beginning, you broke your paragraphs up into one or two sentences. If you add more description, you can make the moment seem realer and have your paragraphs much thicker; you can also merge some of those sentences together. Short-sentenced paragraphs make a chapter seem immature or lacking in description, and there are plenty of opportunities to add more!

I can't wait for the first chapter--good luck and keep on writing!

Thanks so much! I'll take this to heart and do my best!! :)

RE: The Call of Adventure (Prologue is up!)

I really love this story! It's quite a sad prologue due to having to say goodbye to all her friends, but it seems like it will lead to a very exciting adventure.

Why did she decide to leave behind all her Pokémon? Since she's heading to a new region, wouldn't it be smart to at least bring one Pokémon to battle/defend herself?

Apparently she didn't think of that. xD

...but someone did.... xD

Episode 1:
The Damsel in Distress?! Defending the Weak!!

A loud bump startled Skyleaf out of her sleep. The pilot voice came loud and clear over the loudspeaker. “We have arrived in Petalburg, Hoenn.”

Skyleaf quickly sat up, pushing her brown hair away from her face. Her head had made an indentation in her bag where she had slept, lulled by the drone of the plane. I can’t believe I slept the whole way! That never happens! She laughed. She reached over her bag and fumbled around for her glasses. Her hands felt nothing but the soft felt of the seats. Where…? A blur of red caught her eye from the dark blue floor. Oh, they fell on the floor. She picked the thin wires up and put them on, blinking as everything came into focus. Much better.

Most people were already up and leaving the plane, and those still asleep were being woken by the attendants. Everyone around Skyleaf had already left.

The voice came again over the intercom. “Please be sure not to leave any articles on the plane. It will be difficult to return them.” The mention of ‘articles’ made Skyleaf glance towards her bag. “I won’t be forgetting mine,” she said confidently, hoisting it up onto one shoulder. She was about to leave when a small brown blemish caught her eye. “Hm?” she said, moving the bag in front of her to see more easily. On the top of the bag, there was a dark mark, easily noticeable on the bright purple fabric. What is that?

She set the bag back down and began unzipping it. She had barely started when suddenly it lurched to the side, flinging itself off the chair. “What in the world?!” she exclaimed, jumping back. But the bag didn’t stop there. “RA!” “KEE!” Shouts came from inside as it took off in big leaps, half rolling and half jumping. “RAAA!!” “ROKEE!!”

Skyleaf quickly ran around it, blocking its path. As it neared her, she scooped it up in her arms. “CHAA!” “KEE!” Skyleaf instantly began unzipping the bag again. “All right, who is it?” she muttered angrily. The zipper’s tracks ended and she pushed the flap open. A small orange head poked out, sighing in relief.

“Vyria!!” Skyleaf exclaimed. The Charmander quickly swung its head around. “Cha-ha…” she laughed sheepishly, scratching the back of her head. She lifted her tail out of the bag, the flame tip dancing. “It was a burn,” Skyleaf grumbled.

Another head thrust itself out, this one light blue with a dark stripe down its nose. “Kobai too?!” Skyleaf slapped her forehead. Kobai instantly jumped out, landing balanced on the back of a chair. “Fro fro Froakie Froakie,” he explained, waving his hand towards Vyria. Vyria leaped to her feet, protesting. “Char char Charmander!!” she shouted angrily, clenching her fists.

Skyleaf pushed their heads away from each other. “Guys! Now’s not the time, ok? This isn’t my plane, you know.” Vyria grumbled and turned away, sticking her tongue out at Kobai. Kobai crossed his arms and looked away.

Skyleaf sighed in relief, then felt around in her bag. Hopefully they brought… Aha! She took out two PokéBalls, holding them up. “Vyria, Kobai, return!” Two red beams shot out and touched the grumpy Pokémon, absorbing them back into the spheres. “Whew! Glad that’s over,” she said, relieved. The sudden re-introduction of the two Pokémon had startled her. She looked down at the PokéBalls in her hands. “Guess I have no choice but to take you along,” she said, grinning. She could imagine Vyria pumping her fists and cheering inside. Kobai would probably just grin triumphantly.

She hoisted her bag up again, walking to the exit. “Thank you for flying Altari-Air!” an attendant called after her.

She stepped out into the fresh air, a slight breeze stirring her hair and the leaves on the trees. She spread her arms wide, basking in the sense of freshness. A new region. A new adventure. The sunlight streamed down to the world in rays, highlighting the lush green grass and the clear blue sky. Hoenn.

Skyleaf opened her eyes, looking around at the landscape. A dark green shape at the edge of her vision caught her eye. She looked to see a deep forest, with a canopy so thick light barely seemed to get through. Skyleaf grinned. What a great place for a Pokémon to hide. It’s perfect!

She had nothing that she needed to do. She was free, and she knew just what she wanted to do first. She took off into Petalburg Woods.

~~

The leaves rustled in the wind. Taillow flitted about in the trees, too fast to challenge or even stop. Various Pokémon stirred the bushes, but they were unseen for now. Skyleaf sat at the base of a tree, breathing in the clean air. She wanted to enjoy the forest a bit before she battled anyone.

For some reason, a small Taillow perched overhead caught Skyleaf’s attention. It cocked its head at her, seeming curious of the human. It flew away. Skyleaf touched Vyria’s PokéBall, hidden away in her pocket. I wonder why that Taillow seemed important to me. Oh well. I’ll have to battle it later.

“Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!” A loud cry pierced the shroud of quiet.

Skyleaf quickly stood. “What was that?” she asked no one. “That cry... it wasn’t normal, that Pokémon’s in distress!” She snatched her bag up, running as fast as she could towards the cry.

“Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!” It came again. Skyleaf tried to move faster. What’s going on?!

She broke through the forest into a small clearing. Several gray Pokémon were growling, baring their fangs and waving their bushy gray tails. There were five of them, growling and snarling. But not at her. They were surrounding a small blue Pokémon with a fin on the top of its head. Two orange, spiked bubbles protruded from the sides of its head. It was trembling, shaking in fear.

“Chee! Chyena!!” A gray Pokémon barked at it, flashing its teeth. The black patch around its face was wrinkled in a snarl. It was larger than the others, clearly the ‘pack leader.’

The blue Pokémon trembled. “Muud…” it whimpered.

Skyleaf burst into the clearing. “Stop it!”

“Poochy?!” The gray Pokémon swung their heads around. They crouched lower, growling at the Trainer. “Poochy! Chyena!” the leader shouted. Two sprung forward, opening their mouths for a Bite.

Skyleaf jumped backwards, barely avoiding their lunge. She flung a PokéBall. “Vyria, go!”

A white flash appeared and the Charmander fell out, landing squarely on top of a Pokémon. Vyrai quickly sprung off, landing away from the others.

“Chee! Chyena!!” They lunged towards the new target. “Vyria, Ember!” Skyleaf shouted. Vyria took a deep breath and blew, scattering glittering specks of fire.

The Pokémon turned tail and fled back to their leader, cowering behind it. The leader narrowed its eyes, pawing the ground. It reared back its head and Howled. Then it charged. That’s a Tackle!

“Dodge it!” Skyleaf shouted. Vyria nimbly stepped out of the way. The gray Pokémon skidded its paws on the ground, trying to stop itself. An opening! “Now! Scratch!” Vyria leaped over swiping across the Pokémon’s muzzle.

It jumped away to land next to its pack mates. It growled a short command, and they turned and fled back into the brush.

Instantly Skyleaf ran over to the blue Pokémon. It was laying on its side, fainted in exhaustion. It was obvious it had tried to battle by itself. Skyleaf scooped it up in her arms. Wait! “Vyria, return!” Vyria immediately obeyed, leaping into the light.

Skyleaf glanced at the Pokémon in her arms. It was weak, its fins hanging limp. I have to get it to a center, and quick! She took off running.
