Create cards as fast as you can!

Over the course of the year, our Create-a-Card contests look for perfection; the prettiest art, the most creative mechanics, the most lifelike appearance. For the last week of the year, we're focusing on quantity. If you like creating custom cards without having to worry about the strict guidelines of CaC, this is the event for you!

Welcome to the seventh Fakers' Marathon! In this event, we attempt to make the most cards we possibly can in a single week. Whether you're a newcomer or a veteran, whether you prefer to make text-based or image-based cards, the entire community is welcome to participate! All you need is to be a member of PB or the Custom Card Discord Server so we can keep track of your entries and their scores.

If you're new to faking, check out the Help and Resources Thread to help you get started!

How the Fakers' Marathon works

Submit your card by posting it in this thread or to the #showcase channel in the Custom Card Discord Server. That's all you have to do!

Your entry will be assigned a score based on the scoring rubric below. At the end of the week, all the scores are combined and we see how well we did. Last year we amassed a titanic 1,185 points. Can we even approach that this year??

This is not a competition between entrants. Though each entry is being scored, your only job is to drive the total score higher. We're all working together towards that singular goal.

  • We'll accept any kind of card and there is no limit to how many times the same Pokémon can be used! Fakemon? Go for it! Custom template? Absolutely yes! Trainers? Energy? We'll accept those, too!
  • Artists are welcome and encouraged to collaborate with card makers for more cards!
  • The marathon begins immediately and ends Tuesday, December 31st at 11:59:59 PM CDT. To ensure all events have the same timeframe, this is a hard deadline - no late entries will be accepted. Don't procrastinate!

Scoring

We allow both text-based and image-based cards for this event; like CaC, the two categories are scored a bit differently.

Incomplete cards (cards that are missing required elements, like illustrator credit, HP, type, and flavor/Pokedex text for those blanks that use it) will not be counted. There is no penalty for editing your post, so if you screw up, make those edits and resubmit ASAP so you can get credit for your work.

Text-based (Maximum score: 7)

  • Completed entry - 2 points
    • Submit your card and you're already on the board!
  • Gimmick (simple) - +2 points
    • For Pokemon, this essentially covers anything with a Rule Box, but also covers things like Delta Species as well. For Trainers, this could cover things like Team Flare cards.
  • Aesthetics - +3 points
    • Text fakes require less work than image fakes, so you will be rewarded for going the extra mile by using colors, varying text sizes, and sprites in your entry. Here are two examples of cards that would qualify for these points.
    • Trainer cards and Energy cards are ineligible for these points.

Image-based (Maximum score: 25)

  • Completed entry - 5 points
    • Submit your card and you're already on the board!
  • Custom blank - +2 points
    • You can get these points even if you didn't make the blank yourself. Whether it's completely new or just an altered version of an existing blank, we only care that it's original.
  • Holosheet - +2 points
    • Got a Pokemon with a transparent background? These are very easy points to earn. You may not want to waste time cutting a Pokemon out of a complex piece of artwork for this point. Keep it simple.
  • Full art - +3 points
    • Full art cards require more effort than typical cards, so you get more points for doing so.
  • Gimmick (simple) - +2 points
    • This bonus includes things like Light, Dark, Delta Species, custom gimmicks, Radiant Pokemon, or anything else that you would find on a typical blank. A rule of thumb is, if your card could be an uncommon, it qualifies for these points. Does not stack with itself (a Delta Species Dark Glaceon would only receive 2 extra points) or with Gimmick (complex).
  • Gimmick (complex) - +5 points
    • This bonus includes things like V, VMAX, and Pokemon ex. A rule of thumb is, if your card gives up two or more Prizes or is typically illustrated with a 3D render or graphics, it qualifies for these points. Does not stack with Gimmick (simple) (a Light Glaceon ex would only receive 5 extra points). A custom gimmick could award you these points at the host's discretion, but don't count on it.
  • Texture - +3 points
    • Don't worry about making this perfect - just add it for those sweet, sweet points. You can combine this with a holosheet or leave it as is.
  • Own art - +5 points
    • Illustrating your own cards takes a lot of effort. We reward that effort with a significant score boost. Note that in order to receive these points, your artwork must be new.

For collaborations between an artist and a text faker, the total image-based score will be split between both entrants.

Rules
  • Proper illustrator credit must be present on all cards. No exceptions.
    • We have a list of artists who have granted blanket permissions to the community on our Discord server as well as in the Help and Resources thread.
    • PidgiWiki is also a very good resource for finding high-quality official Pokémon artwork, which requires no permissions!
    • Of course, you can always seek out other artists for permission or make your own artwork for this marathon.
    • If you're using a screenshot from the anime as your artwork, credit OLM, Inc.
  • High quality cards only.
    • While you aren't specifically being judged on the content of your card, you must still have correct fonts and placement (for images), good balance for whatever format they're intended to fit with, and a presentable appearance. The host reserves the right to reject any card if it does not meet this standard.
  • Card generators are not allowed.
    • If you want to do an image fake but don't know where to start, join our Discord. There are non-Photoshop alternatives out there and we can teach you all about them.
  • All image-based cards must include the Fakers' Marathon 7 Official Set Logo on the card.
    • It doesn't have to be the set logo (although that is recommended), but it has to be on the card.
    • Faking in a pre-SV era? Use this one instead.
  • All cards submitted to the marathon must be new.
    • Cards created before December 25, 2024 are not eligible to be counted. The goal is to create new cards, not repost existing ones.
    • Reposting new entries with slight changes or new artwork will not be counted.
  • Using existing official artwork is prohibited.
    • This covers any artwork that has appeared on an official card in any language. Other artwork by the artist is okay, provided you have permission to use it.

Deadline: Tuesday, December 31st, 11:59pm CDT

My first published text fake in a while! I decided to mimic Champion Road/Celestial Storm/Dragon Majesty/Lost Thunder/Team Up by remaking a vintage ex as a "modern" GX.

BASIC Absol GX HP180 (D)
1735350686771.png

Ability Cursed Eyes
When you play this Pokémon from your hand onto your bench during your turn, you may move 3 damage counters from 1 of your opponent’s Pokémon to another of their Pokémon.

(D)(C) Psychic Pulse 30
This attack does 30 damage to each of your opponent’s benched Pokémon that has any damage counters on it.

(D) Devo Flash GX
Devolve 2 of your opponent’s evolved Pokémon by removing any number of Evolution cards from it. Your opponent shuffles those cards into their deck.

weakness (F) 2x | resistance (P) -20 / retreat (C)
. / Pokémon-GX rule / When your Pokémon-GX is
/ Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.

Looks like Tapu Koko has found a new friend... wonder if it would have been played in this Sun and Moon through Lost Thunder deck! https://alexwilsonnc.github.io/tes/decks-by-era/2018/sum-lot#honchkrow (Some scrolling might be required, just look up PTCG Legends Deck by Era if this link breaks.)

Next, some Gym series style Trainer cards. I'm designing these with the mindset of a Prop 15/3 player, with the intent of making some relevant to that format, but I'm also taking inspiration from the more whimsical or casual cards of the set. The recent owner's Pokémon archetype reveals have probably got me in this mindset, but I'm also looking for a chance to hammer out some points easily while still producing an interesting final product.

TRAINER
Brock's Hospitality

You can play this card only if you have at least 1 Pokémon with Brock in its name in play. Search your deck for a Pokémon with an owner (Except Brock) in its name. Show it to your opponent and put it into your hand. Shuffle your deck afterward.

TRAINER
Misty's Sisters

Attach Misty's Sisters to 1 of your Pokémon with Misty in its name. At the end of your turn, discard Misty's Sisters. If that Pokémon uses an attack that involves flipping coins, you may discard a card from your hand. If you do, treat the first flip as heads.

TRAINER
Lt. Surge's Rerouting

Take a basic (L) Energy attached to 1 of your Pokémon with Lt. Surge in its name and attach it to 1 of your other Pokémon.

TRAINER
Koga's Potions

Your Active Pokémon with Koga in its name is now Poisoned. Heal 20 damage from that Pokémon. If that Pokémon is Asleep, Confused or Paralyzed, remove it is no longer Asleep, Confused or Paralyzed.

TRAINER
Blaine's Scouting

Search your deck for a Stadium card. Show it to your opponent and put it into your hand. Shuffle your deck afterward.

Brock's Hospitality would be effective in a deck mixing Pokémon from different owners, particularly potent with Brock's Ninetales, but also relevant if you're pairing Brock's Sandslash with Pokémon like Rocket's Zapdos or Blaine's Rapidash in, say, Prop 15/3. Blaine's Scouting is a generic stadium search and reference to his eventual homelessness. Lt. Surge's Rerouting is meant to turn his Electabuzz into support for other Pokémon, while Koga's Potion is largely designed as Koga's Arbok support with niche value for other Koga's Pokémon. Misty's Sisters is a thematically fitting solution to all the coin-flippiness of Misty's Pokémon in particular... just do them a little favor and skip all the hard work!

Honestly, maybe I'll make a few more owner's Pokémon and Trainers. Or perhaps I'll create some Prism Stars to explore the nuances of their card design.

Alright, you know I had to do it to 'em. Max points card, here I come. This card uses a custom blank, has a holosheet, is a full-art, has a complex gimmick, has a texture, and of course, features art by yours truly. I present Skarmory VSTAR, likely the pinnacle of my creation this faker's marathon.

Here's a bunch more. I think these should all be 14 pointers, with custom blank, holosheet, simple gimmick, and texture, except the turtwig, which has complex gimmick.

I've done Plasma cards and Omnium cards for past Fakers' Marathons, but never both at the same time!

Many thanks to @Pone for the blank, to @aschefield101 for the holosheet, to the Surging Sparks wallpaper collection (probably either 5ban or PLANETA?) for the art, and to Archaludon for looking like a bridge and staple remover at the same time.

not sure if my image card will make it so here are some silly text fakes!

Pumpkaboo - [P] - HP40
Basic

NO. 0710 Pumpkin Pokémon HT: 1'4" WT: 11 lbs.

[C] Necrobotany
Put up to 3 in any combination of Pumpkaboo, Gourgeist, Gourgeist-ex, and basic Energy from your discard pile into your hand. You can use this attack even if this Pokémon is in the discard pile. This attack costs [C] less if this Pokémon is in the discard pile.

Weakness: Dark (x2)
Resistance: Fighting (-30)
Retreat Cost: [C][C]
Spirits that wander this world are placed into Pumpkaboo's body. They're then moved on to the afterlife.

Pumpkaboo! I have been rotating these kinds of baby 'mon with interesting support all day, and I really like the idea of a use-from-discard baby. I don't know if this'd be good in Standard if a better Gourgeist was printed, but I still think it's a silly little guy!

Clefairy - [P] - HP60
Basic
NO. 0035 Fairy Pokémon HT: 2" WT: 16.5 lbs.

[C][C] Moon-Viewing Dance
Choose up to 4 of your Clefairy and put them and all attached cards into your hand. Draw a card for each Pokémon that you put into your hand in this way. If you would put any basic [P] Energy cards into your hand in this way, you may instead attach them to 1 of your Benched Pokémon.

Weakness: Metal (x2)
Resistance: -
Retreat: [C]
On nights with a full moon, Clefairy gather from all over and dance. Bathing in moonlight makes them float.
Clefairy was one of the Pokémon that I thought of first when looking at babymon with support, and I like that Clefairy MEW can swarm your board with Clefairy and LOR can accelerate them. This is the successor to both of them, retracting your Clefairy and letting you accelerate some energy and draw some cards!

well! it's not a 25/25 (opted for BWXY over omnium for this one) but i'm really happy with this card! i made the render myself (i haven't turned a render into a card before, and i've really only made one render), and WOW those lines are tricky! i dunno how you all do it, you guys are wizards! but it happened! the attack is? it's something! i don't know much about BWXY but about 90% of this card was done in the last 12 hours so i didn't have time to balance too much lol. but raaagh!! minior ex!!

minior-ex(1).png
i would've added a second attack but it would've engulfed another minior if i did lol (also hOO BOY 6 LINES OF TEXT)

We smashed the record, accumulating 1,350 points over the week! And by we I mean you guys and by you guys I mean @Gravity Monkey and @Kaleidophoenix, who together were responsible for 1,009 of those points.

@Jabberwock's lone entry lets him continue his streak of participating in every marathon. @doofisconfused was the only person to submit cards for both categories.

Gravity Monkey's fakemon were all really cool to see, and the Rainbow Aura trait on Kaleidophoenix's cards makes me wish they were real.

Congrats to the community for another successful marathon!
