Ruling the first turn

ever since i started to play in tournaments i've gotten confused about the "using trainers on the first turn" take this case, whenever the pairings are up and i met my opponent, i shake the dude's hand and then we roll the dice and i say heads. its tails and the guy goes first and plays no trainers, then it's my turn and i play a trainer and the guy says " you can't do that"

is this right? i've played a lot of games and this situation happens a lot and i hate having to falsely correct or be corrected.

The player who is first may not use any Trainers, Supporters, or Stadiums on their first turn. The player who is second may use Trainers, Supporters, and Stadiums.~Mark
