Chapter 1-Who to choose?

It was a cold, dark morning in Sinnoh as Cameron slowly got up out of his bed, rubbing his blue eyes, and scratching his short brown hair. Although sleepy, he couldn’t wait to get to Sandgem Town, where he, as a ten-year old trainer, would choose his very first Pokémon. As he tiredly went to get ready for the day, he tried to answer the question that had kept him up all night long. Which Pokémon would he choose? Cameron would have to make a good decision now, because he had heard that the three Pokémon he had to choose from were nearly extinct in the wild, now flourishing in labs all around the country, which meant if he got the wrong one now, he may never see one again.

“Chimchar is really good at Physical Attacks, and at Special too.” He thought.
“On the other hand, Piplup is really easy to get along with. But Turtwig’s shell gives it high defences…” Just at that moment, his mother walked through the door.
“Breakfast’s in half an hour.” She warned Cameron. “So you better be ready.”
“Don’t worry!” The boy replied. “I’ll be ready in a minute!” as he said that, he plunged back into thought.

Down at the breakfast table, Cameron was served his food by his mum. Sitting across the table was his big brother Bradley, and dad.
“So, you’re getting you’re first Pokémon today.” Bradley stated.
“Yeah, I am.” Cameron answered.
“Who are you going to choose?” he asked, almost like he wasn’t going to accept any answer.
“I haven’t quite chosen yet, but I’m thinking either Chimchar or Turtwig.” he answered, almost knowing what his brother was going to say next.
“My Empoleon has knocked out more Torterras and Infernapes then I can count.” His brother said, boastfully.
“That’s a mute point. You can’t count.” Cameron replied, cheekily.
“Is that even possible? I mean, I am WAY smarter then you, so if I can’t count… I’m surprised you can walk!”

Dad interrupted the fight with something from the newspaper he was holding.
“The Pokémon World Cup finals start in a few days,” he announced to the table.
“And Sinnoh has 3 representatives. We’re going well this year. I think we’ve got a good chance this time!” he mumbled something about Johto being cheaters at the end.
“Dad, we already know that!” Cameron’s brother complained.
“Speaking of battles, I think there’s one on the TV right now.” Cameron said, jumping for the remote.

Immediately, the three people were staring at an aerial view of high above a giant stadium. From the clouds, they could just make out two figures standing at either end of the colossal battlefield, surrounded by thousands of seats, all filled with spectators.
“An epic Pokémon battle is about to begin here at the Ace Dome.” said a booming voice through a microphone. Suddenly the camera zoomed in on the battlers.
“Today’s battlers are Jessica from Johto, and David from Kanto, in the last fight before the finals!” standing in the ring were a tall, thin lady, with long brown hair and a plump, short man with black hair. The dwarf picked out a small red and white ball from his pocket first, followed by Jessica, who took hers out of her Jean’s pocket. Both of them, however, threw out the Pokéballs they were holding at the same time. A beam of light erupted from both of the Pokéballs, obscuring the creatures behind it. As the light dimmed, the two Pokémon were revealed.

The creature standing near David took on the shape of a human, but with muscle-covered eight arms, and an entire body of grey, its body was totally unlike a person’s. It wore a golden medal held around its waist by a black belt, which, as Cameron remembered, was there to hold in its power from taking over it. At first sight, anyone could tell that it wasn’t a Pokémon to be messed with.

On the other side of the arena, a dark blue beetle was standing tall, tiny wings folded, massive horn ready to charge. Its body was compact, and its large yellow eyes showed its anger.

“David chose a Machamp as his first Pokémon, while Jessica entered the battle with a Heracross!” The announcer shouted out loudly. The camera went over to each Pokémon, zooming in on their determined faces.

Cameron watched in awe as Jessica called out the first order.
“Heracross, Swords Dance!”
The giant bug glowed white.
“It seems that Jessica is preparing for a much bigger and better attack!” the M.C mentioned, as the light around the insect dimmed. David made the next move, but the order was hard to hear over the roar of the crowd. The Machamp charged forward eagerly, its fists alit with bright red flames, and hit the opponent with its six hands. The Heracross fell down like a feather, badly injured by the fire.
“A wonderful Fire Punch from Machamp!!!” the announcer cheered out.

There was a glimmer in Heracross’s eye that made the audience go quite. The small Pokémon stood up. It took three steps backwards, before running angrily towards Machamp. Just before it struck the human-like Pokémon, its horn began to glow brightly. As it made contact with the enemy, Machamp was thrown back forcefully, almost hitting the audience, who, after seeing the massive power contained in Heracross, were more berserk than before.

“What we have just may be the best Megahorn attack in the history of Competitive Battling!” The announcer said admiringly. Jessica took a bow before commanding the Heracross to use Brick Break on David’s Pokémon. The Heracross’s fist shined, much like its horn, before ramming into the towering, six-armed creature before it. The crowd yelled out in excited roars as the bigger Pokémon was knocked unconscious.
“Here today we have witnessed a David verse Goliath story-but Goliath was David!” The presenter said jokingly, as David snatched out the Pokémon’s Pokéball with his chunky hand angrily. The Pokémon returned in the spectacular fashion it had arrived in, and the man threw out the next Pokéball immediately.

“One day I will battle like them!” Cameron thought cheerfully, and mostly confidently. But he knew he still had one choice to make that could jeopardize his entire adventure.
Bradley interrupted his thought with a question.
“So, who are you going to choose now?” he said, turning to the TV where a blue, penguin-like creature had just finished off a strange, red monkey.
“Look, I’m still trying to decide!” his brother said, annoyed that he had been interrupted. But in the end, it didn’t really matter, since that was exactly what he had been trying to answer himself.
“But it isn’t going to be Piplup!”
“I thought you were trying to become a Pokémon master, not a reject that looses at the first gym!” Bradley replied annoyingly. A smirk formed on his face, but all that changed as Cameron spoke.
“And I guess YOUR Empoleon failing you three years in a row then running away doesn’t count, now does it?”
Bradley’s smirk changed to an enraged frown. Cameron knew he had hit him hard.

Three years in a row, Bradley had tried his hardest to gain all eight badges in order to battle the Elite 4, the national champions, and twice he had succeeded. But then he had been beaten in the very first battle both times. After having to go through the same journey three times, his Empoleon, his favourite Pokémon, had decided it wanted out, after all the battles it had won for Bradley, and all the care he had given it. Cameron’s brother had never tried to beat the Elite 4 since.
“My Empoleon didn’t just run away.” Bradley said through clenched teeth. It was Cameron’s turn to smirk now.
“Then where is it?” Cameron asked mockingly. His brother hesitated for a second before answering.
“I don’t know where, and I don’t know why, but there WAS a reason.”
Cameron could tell Bradley was about to snap.
“Maybe it wanted a trainer that knew how to battle.”
“That’s not why, okay? We were friends.”
“And that’s why it ran away without telling you where it was going? Sounds like you were great friends.”
“That’s enough! Cameron, you’ll never be a good trainer if you pick on people like that!” their dad interrupted. Cameron almost said “But he’s my Brother!”, but he decided that it wouldn’t be wise. Instead, he simply said sorry, had breakfast, then left for Sandgem.

The car trip from Twinleaf Town to Professor Rowan’s house was short, and silent. Bradley wasn’t talking to Cameron after what had happened early. When they finally reached the entrance to Sandgem Town, Cameron got out of the small car and searched through the boot for his backpack. After that, he headed for Rowan’s house.

It wasn’t hard for him to tell he had found the laboratory. It was a peculiar building, with a weird, space-age feeling to it, yet a farm-like backyard where Cameron could see various species of Pokémon roaming around freely. It was a colossal, round building with a greyish white paint covering it.

Cameron took a step towards the building, as determined as ever, confident about which Pokémon he would choose.
