So with the return of Garbodor and the addition of Fighting Spirit Belt in XY9, big basics can comeback and wreck the metagame. So what do we pair it with? Here is my list of contendors:

Standard:
  • Tyrantrum-EX (Non-Garbodor)
  • Aurorus-EX
  • Yveltal-EX
  • Charizard-EX
  • Seismitoad-EX
  • Lucario-EX
  • Manectric-EX
  • Aegislash-EX (Non-Garbodor)
  • Lugia-EX
  • Giratina-EX (Optional-Garbodor)
  • Glalie-EX
  • Miltank
  • Regice
Expanded:
  • Darkrai-EX
  • Regigias-EX
  • Ho-Oh-EX (Non-Garbodor)
  • Keldeo-EX (Non-Garbodor)
  • Landorus-EX
  • Coballion-EX (Non-Garbodor)
  • Lugia-EX (Non-Garbodor)
  • Latias-EX (Non-Garbodor)
  • Genesect-EX (Optional-Garbodor)
Well that's about all I've got. What Non-EX Pokemon do you think will be used with FSB and Garbodor? I know Regice, Miltank, and Bouffalant will be used. Thanks for reading!

I think Entei is going to see play with this a lot. With two FSB, it has 210 HP. That's as much as a mega!

Because Mewtwo X has such an efficient attack, I believe Garbador will pair with Mewtwo EX and M Mewtwo EX. I think along with Max Elixer it will really make the damage exchange attack and Psychic infinity attack be big. I also think it will pair well with Siesmitoad EX. Honestly, I believe everybody is going to be play Siesmitoad/Garbordor/Yveltal EX/Yvetal with energy disruption, hand disruption and tool disruption. The games will come to a crawl. Cynically, I believe that is how pokemon likes to watch games, or they just have an enormous love for those pokemon. Item and ability lock will be back. Because of this, I think Sceptile/Vespquen will be the go to counters, if they get a big first turn. Basically, I believe we will return to last seasons meta game. Not excited about it, but Seismitoad/Garbordor/Yveltal EX/Yveltal is time tested and will perform well. Sorry, if you sensed my irritation. There is only so many quaking punches one can handle.

I actually like Seismitoad with Greninja/ Greninja Break. That would be hitting so much damage out put that it sould basically be toads bats and laser all over again. And can be pretty fast if you run it like speed Blastoise to try and get turn 1 Greninja to break next turn, and with belt you have toad tanking at 220 with Rough Seas and Greninja and Greninja Break doing 90 before attacking. That seems really powerful and can be faster than Garb once you lock.

The reason Big Basics saw a lot of play back in the day was that everything in the deck could attack for one, maybe two Energy attachments. The deck didn't need any kind of support like Eels, Blastoise, Klinklang, etc, and because of this, a lot of players decided to devote that extra space to shutting down other decks with Garbodor. That's what the phrase "Big Basics" means to me, and so I don't think that Tyrantrum, Aegislash, Keldeo, and Genesect would be good in a big basics type of deck. I don't think Miltank would work for a different reason. While it can attack for only one Energy, you need to set up a Stage 2, at which point, it's no longer big basics. (Miltank isn't very big either.) Stage 2's also take up a lot of room, so you don't have the room to play Garbodor, and even if you did, the only Stage 2's that are worth playing have Abilities--that's what makes them worthwhile.

Sidenote: If you ever play Ho-Oh and Garbodor in the same deck, you should call it Ash N' Trash.

Garbodor comes back and big basic's decks seem viable when they aren't currently being played. What's wrong with yveltal/zoroak/garbodor, didn't stop us from playing darkrai/keldeo/garbodor?

It's a good idea. I'd like to see that play out. I know the Garbordor Darkrai worked well because Darkrai was hard to knock out and could tank for 2 rounds. Zorark would be a one hit wonder, and with stand in turned off on a 2/2 line you would really limit its power. Zoroark is a great card, but I don't think it would have the dominance of Darkrai in a Garbodor deck. Seismitoad however would be easy to setup, hard to knock out, and completely devastating to the opponent as the deck setup garbador and yveltal ex. The opponent wouldn't be able to do anything about it unless Xerosic fell in his hand and even that is a crap shoot.

Zoroark and darkrai technically do the same thing in their respective formats ability and attack wise and have fair matchups across the board, and again keldeo was still a considered tech in garbodor builds. Toad, by itself in standard is terrible as everything deals more dmg then toad does even with garbodor. I'm not going to talk about an older format and compare the 2 when the current format has substantially changed and matchups aren't the same.

Of all the cards forthcoming in the new set, this is the Pokemon I personally am most interested in getting. Garbotoxin is truly one of the best Abilities ever created, IMO, and it can be used very effectively in certain decks (speaking from experience in placing in 2 Top 4 State tournaments running my "Big Basics with Garbodor" deck). My deck strategy then, as well as, in the future will be to again team the new Garbodor with "powerful," no Ability, and 1-2 energy attachment Pokemon. Given all the Pokemon that are now available, there will be some very interesting Garbodor deck options.
