TPCi just released a press release confirming the two Pokemon in the video are the Legendary Pokemon and the version mascots.

What do you guys think about the two? I feel like the elk is a design Pokemon should have done a while ago. I've seen a lot of fanart over the years for an elk-like Legendary Pokemon, many of which I think are inspired by the Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke. So I'm glad they finally brought that kind of design over to the Pokemon world now since an elk always seems to be one of the great animals of the forest. With these two Legendaries, I'm also glad they moved away from the sort of "mecha" Legendary Pokemon designs we've seen the past three generations like with Groudon, Dialga, Palkia, Reshiram, and Zekrom. The two new Legendaries seem much more "natural" and like they actually belong in nature.

So what do you guys think? What do you think the Pokemon are based on? What do you think their designs mean to the story? I'm not sure what the bird Pokemon is supposed to be, but the elk Pokemon seems to have some sort of mysterious power going on with its rainbow-colored antlers. They sort of remind me of DNA, which the games might even be themed after.

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

To me the first one looked really cool, kind of dark and sly, not like anything I'd seen before, which I like. The second one though didn't seem as new to me, though it did look pretty cool. It sort of looked like Arceus, Cobalion, and Virizon, and so I didn't like it as much as the first one, because it didn't seem as different.

I do like them both though, and as WPM said, they both look in touch with nature, which I agree was something needed in the mascots for a change.

The Two Legendary Pokemon

I like the bird personally, and as I posted on FB, I think the bird represents the Y and the elk the X (colors and poses match). DNA involvement seems likely, but I'm just happy with the names in general. I felt like with b&w they got back to basics instead of continually trying to outdo the last colors/elements, this new naming scheme keeps with that.

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

I just noticed that the bird looks like a Y when seen in full and if you pause the video on the elk's face, you'll see he has blue X's for irises.

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

Both are excellent designed. I like the elk more. They are some of the best legendaries so far. The version is going to be difficult to pick so I will pick it by version exclusive pokemon/places.

They seem to be nature-like so I believe they are going to be games related to nature. Maybe the region has habitats being destroyed and the 2 legendaries will help to restore the places (yes like Cobalion and the Musketeers)?

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

finally, algebra and geometry are important!

i really like both designs, even more that zekrom and reshiram.

i'm probably going after the bird, but the elk has an awesome design as well.

also, round of applause for them not being dragons. i'm guessing both are part psychic, which im okay with.

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

If the bird Pokemon is Y, I think I'll be getting Y. On the idea of the DNA thing, I think that may be true. I could see them both as "Nature Purifiers" and honestly we may end up with something like an Aqua-Magma rivalry, because the two do seem to contrast each other. The argument against it though is that the X Pokemon is on land and the Y in air which makes for a difficultly done fight in game and in the anime.

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

the blue deer is surely x..look at those things over his legs, with the horns they form a x.. Cant't see clearly their eyes..

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

im not that animal lover... but, what kind of species of the 2nd legendary pokemon? A deer?

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

Also in the logos, I noticed in the Y, the ends of the Y had spikes, similar to the wings of the Bird. The same happens with the X and the deer.

Aside from that point, I love these new legendaries. It's nice to not have Dragons for a change, and the deer looks amazing. Not so sure about the bird yet, but I'm sure after a while and when we get the Sugimori artwork it will look great. It's already grown on me from when I first saw it.

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

I think they both look rather fantastic in both design and overall appeal. I do want to agree with WPM and say that I'm also glad they don't look similar to some of our more recent legendaries that barely remind me of Pokemon to a certain extent. I enjoy designs that really make me think they're Pokemon so I don't start to feel that Pokemon are starting to lose that unique appeal that the franchise has shown in the past. WPM put it nicely saying that they look more "natural".

My personal thoughts with these two is it's less, "Oh hey, two new dragon, those look cool." and more, "Look at those pretty colors on the Elk and the really neat, tough looking bird?" I'm easy to please with new Pokemon. I rarely dislike any particular Pokemon and tend to appreciate most all of them. But I just want to make my point clear and say with these in Pokemon in particular it makes me take a step back and really appreciate in more detail on how well I think they're designed, rather than just looking at legendary Pokemon such as Reshiram and Zekrom and think the main reason they appeal to me is because they're monstrous dragons and not much else.

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

Well apart from them looking very nature based, unless the version exclusives sway me in a different direction, I'm going with X. The X pokemon just reminds me so much of the deer god in Princess Mononoke!

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

someone from other forum said ts from a norse myth about a world tree and a hawk elk and snake/dragon sitting nibbling and chewing on the tree the elk is represented by abundance or something

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

For some reason the bird reminds me of Staraptor and that's not a good thing. Immediately turned me off.

However, the deer/elk? Holy crud. Blew my socks off. Looks absolutely fantastic to me.

I'm also glad they're not dragons but it seems weird to have them as mascots (if that's what they are) considering they look nothing alike.

dmaster out.

Also, in the logo, X is blue (like the deer), and Y is red, like the bird.

My favourite is the blue deer, especially since as a Hungarian, it reminds me our folklore, as according to the mythology, there was a creature called as "Miraculous Deer", who was chased by two brothers. They couldn't catch him, however, it always stayed ahead of them and led them to their new home. HOWEVER, in Hungarian Mythology, we have another interesting bird creature called as "Turul", which is a divine messenger, rules the top of the tree of life, and had an important role in the life of the nation.

I don't know if it is coincidence or not, but it's really nice to see some connection between your culture and a series you like. Japanese like Hungarian language and culture, as this nation, even thought it now lives in Europe, it has Asian origins and similar folklore, and also Japanese think our language as some kind of "alien" speak. (Anyone played Sine Mora? It's in Hungarian.)

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

I hate the legendaries. It doesn't seem "legendary" at all. I hate how his gen's Pokemon is looking! D:

RE: The Two Legendary Pokemon

I think the deer Pokemon will have Chlorophyll as its ability since it is perfectly at home in a forest.

Since they are legendaries, they most likely have an exclusive ability. But I think Chlorophyll would suit it as well.
