Discussion Thoughts on Hippowdon

I'm currently testing Hippowdon in the expanded format for Regionals and would love to hear any thoughts that you have on the deck, whether it be for expanded, standard, or even for the future meta. I realize some people may find this as a rouge deck, but I believe that expanded can boost it.

Right now I've mainly tested it with DRX Stunfisk, Heavy Ball, Landorus EX, and varied counts of HypnoToxic Laser.

If Giant Plant Forest gets banned for Expanded, I'll also play Hippowdon! I think that Landorus is better than Stunfisk because it does more damage and has more HP. I know that it's an EX but it dosen't really matter since your opponent will have a hard time taking prizes off of Hippowdon is they play primarily EXs. Also, Seismitoad is also really good in this deck because it's a great starter that can slow down your opponent. As for Laser, I don't think it's worth it. You are two shotting everything with Fighting Stadium and Strong Energy so it isn't really needed. Heavy Ball is perfect for Hippowdon because you can search Landorus, Toad, Hippopotas, and Hippowdon.

Yeah, I like to run 2 Toads myself. As for laser you make a good point, but I mainly run it for the sake of OHKO'ing any non-ex threats, one more thing I forgot to mention is that I've tried out Silver Bangle as a one of, I suggest you run at least one copy. Thanks for your imput! :p

Got an update on my play testing; just hit the 50th win with the expanded format version of Hippo/Toad, the win/loss ratio is 50 - 3. Keeping in mind that this is testing done in PTCGO there are no AOR cards in the game yet, however the main foreseeable threat to the Hippos remains in match-ups against NM and Bat decks. The only note worthy threat to Hippowdon coming out of Ancient Origins is the notorious item lock from Vileplume. However, in this set there is another pokemon like Hippowdon, namely Regice. Regice gets the attack Resistance Blizzard, which is a slightly stronger 70 damage, but water pokemon don't have the support that fighting types do so it's unknown if it will be viable, and to make things worse it has a Steel weakness.

You're right about the lasers. I was testing Hippo today and I decided to put some in and they really helped! Also, congrats on your 50th win!:)

Thanks! I'm glad I could help :D; also I've just hit win #79, but I now have 5 losses with it. 2 were to Yveltal decks surprisingly, the resistance and damage that Oblivion Wing Yveltal provides are a pain.

I feel like it should be at least a 2 of; if you lose the one, Dark decks sort of steamroll over this deck since they have ways around the EX block. It swings for 110 with Stadium, Strong Energy and Bangle anyway and all for one energy, so it's not that clunky.

Since this will be for the Expanded Regionals, why not Jolteon AoT? With it in play a Hippowdon with 1 Strong and 1 Muscle Band OHKO's Baby Yveltal.

That is a great idea that crossed my mind, but with flareon for Vespi matches. Yvetal is one of my worst match ups, However I never thought of Jolteon; the only issues are the use of search cards (I use heavy ball and Korrina) and also I don't have much space so at best my line would be a 2-1. Great advice though. Thanks! :)
