Ruling Top Cut Pairings

Hi guys,

I have a quick question regarding how top cut pairings are decided during most official Play! Pokemon tournaments.

Are the pairings of the players decided by their standings from the swiss rounds, or are they simply random? I know that swiss round pairings are decided by how well one performs throughout each round, and am just wondering if this also applies to top cut as well or if it is something entirely different.

For example I finished 2nd after swiss rounds, and then end up playing the 7th ranked player in my top 8 round. Was this a random coincidence or a pairing that has a patten to it?

Thanks.

It's a basic single elimination match up at that point.

1 vs 8
2 vs 7
3 vs 6
4 vs 5

So ... the pairings are always going to put the highest seeds vs the lowest ones? Making it so the highest seed will always play the lowest one? (so logically, the higher seed you are after swiss rounds, the lower the seed you'll face first in top cut?)

Sorry, just trying to confirm if this is actually the way the pairings are set up or if I'm simply speculating it.

That is essentially correct. It is the "standard" way a single elimination seeding works. It puts the 1 and 2 seeds on opposite sides of the bracket and makes the lower seeds "work harder" to get to the finals.
