Tornadus-EX PLF

I'm really wondering why this card is so unpopular and rejected. The FA versions of this are selling for mere peanuts on eBay, and I wonder if people are missing the point.

I know Tornadus-EX has no lauded ability, and its first attack leaves much to be desired since it does no damage. And the second attack has a puny 60 base damage, which can potentially hit for 200 with a Muscle Band in a single turn, but that relies on having all your available Plasma Energy in the deck plus access to 3-4 Colress Machines. Which ain't gonna happen with Enhanced Hammer and the chance that some of the Plasma is prized.

But with just a DCE and 2 Plasma Energy, that's 140 with a Muscle Band. That's just 10 short of the common 150 base damage many EX attackers have for 4 Energy. Alternatively you could run Plasma Frigate and replace Muscle Band with Eviolite/Hard Charm for a tankier build.

So what is wrong with that to make Tornadus-EX a cheap, forgotten outcast?

Most of the meta relies on abilities (correct me if I'm wrong since I've only been into the TCG for a few months). But take out those abilities, and it's down to brawn vs brawn. Back to basics: beatdown.

The potential to do that damage is why it isnt played much. If it were damage that was definatly going to occur it would be more viable. It takes four energy to actually do damage and you need to bank on having a few plasma energy on it just to do ok numbers. Plasma energy is better spent on Lugia EX, Deoxys EX, and setting up a quick Kyurem with a colress machine. There are more effeciant attackers that can attack for fewer energy. Its just to hard to set up and is not worth the hasle of trying to set it up.

any decks that I've seen it use this card play it primarily for Windfall, its first attack which is a decent early-game hand refresh. Even then, it's not common since the card becomes a bench sitter once you're set up and has nothing else to contrubute. Bench space is precious in Plasma decks since you need to devote a fair amount of it do Deoxys-EX. As an attacker, four energy is a pretty hefty cost as far as the metagame goes, and since it needs Plasma Energy to do any real damage, that's a pretty grim outlook. As Ironman131 said, there's just so many other cards in the metagame that make better use of Plasma Energy, and have an easier time hitting the magic 170-180, like Kyruem PLF and Lugia-EX. Both of these cards have been the centerpieces of major metagame decks (TDK and Speed Lugia, respectively), and are simply more efficient attackers than Tornadus, Kruyem simply being a monster of a non-EX, and Lugia able to take extra prizes. The only way to run Tornadus effectively as an attacker would be to use strategies similar to Lugia and TDK, and get less output so you might as well just run those.

One word: Lugia.

Lugia can also hit OHKOs with the right set up, but takes an additional prize. I don't think Tornadus is bad, but it's just outclassed.

But what if abilities are removed with Garbodor? No abilities means no energy acceleration and damage boosts for many Pokemon. It would just be a competition of who does the most damage.

Yeah but it would still take longer to set up tornadus EX then it would to set up a different pokemon.

Plasma decks typically like to use abilities such as Deoxys EX to boost their damage output. However, since plasma decks have a lot of other benefits, I couldn't imagine a Plasma deck with Garbodor being too bad. It would just have to switch it's focus to Thundurus EX and Colress Machine.

(come to think of it, I actually made a plasma Kyurem/Garbodor deck online. I remember winning, but it might have been a weird matchup)

Dark Pulse that is still only 120 damage for 4 energy, which is not good at all in todays format. It is also hard to get every card you need in your first hand. If you are going to put that much work into it you might as well use Lugia EX for the same energy and amount of damage and get an extra prize card.
