I recently got out of the Pokemon TCG (Just about a year ago) because of so many new card mechanics coming out such as break cards, multiple type cards, etc. I have decided to come back and I am completely confused about tournament rotations as I just watched a regional match-up with pre-XY cards. Can I get a clarification on this? I used to run Yveltal/Darkrai and Mew/Accelgor.

There are two types of officially sanctioned tournaments: Standard and Expanded. What you watched was an Expanded format match, where sets from Black & White and on are legal for use. Regionals are usually done with this format to keep things interesting.
