In my mind, I feel that I should be having a lot more success with this deck than I am having in reality (well, the reality of PTCGO). I can't even win half the matches I play, though, and I can't really figure out what I'm missing. If you can think of some improvements or suggestions, I'd be greatly appreciative.

My bro runs this deck in tournaments, so I will ask him how he manages to win first place with his deck. Maybe I will post his deck list so you have a reference.

I could be wrong, but I think this deck was more successful with the addition of dimension valley. I have never played this deck before, mainly cause I don't like all the evolving you have to do, but scanning the deck real quick I feel that your supporter line is really high. I'm sort of conflicted with 4 sycamore and 4 N since you can only play one a turn, but more concerning is no float stone to retreat trevenant since he has a 3 retreat cost. I would probably consider taking 2 N out for 2 float stones. Maybe consider the 4 lysandre for something else since trevenant does splash damage anyways so you probably won't have to lysandre too often, because every Pokémon your opponent has is going to have at least 3 damage counters on it.

Psychic decks, like Fighting but to a lesser extent, definitely took a hit when Dim Valley rotated out.... All of my decks this month are running 4 lysandre (I'm testing that to see if I win more), but definitely that's something I should change.... I don't have any switch cards because I know that I'm going to have to sacrifice some pokemon early in the game while I'm getting Trevenant and Gengar set up.... Hmm so maybe I should be running teammates and ace trainer, maybe a Wally or Evosoda?

After reviewing and analyzing your deck, I would expect this deck to have poor performance for several reasons including:
  • What is your deck strategy? You didn't list yours, but I assume you expect to spread damage counters with Trevenant initially prior to using Gengar to KO the Defending Pokémon? Consider the deck's strategy which is very limited with little to no other opponent's Pokémon KO options. Hence, opponents need only target your Gastlys (which are easy KOs) to essentially create/gain a favorable, game-winning condition.
  • The deck is awfully *slow* to setup. Essentially, you are running 2 Stage 2 lines without Evo Soda, Rare Candy or Wally. Too many turns are needed to get your Pokémon into the proper position. Further, there are no Level Ball nor Brigette to help get your Basic Pokémon out faster. IMO, 4 Ultra Ball are woefully insufficient.
  • All of your Basic Pokémon are relatively "easy" 1HKOs; so, I suspect you play from behind, in terms of the prize count, most games. Chances are, I suspect, you can't recover and re-setup your resources fast enough to overcome the prize deficit in time.
  • Since Dimension Valley has rotated out, you need more time in get into attack postion since you'll need to attach energy manually multiple times before you can attack in most cases. Opponents will not, most likely, give you that time. Plus, when you attach the Exp. Share, you've just "highlighted" or marked a viable Lysandre target for your opponent...
IMO, following are a few suggested improvement changes for your consideration:

-1 Professor Sycamore - you really can't afford to discard too many reources
-1 N - 3 should be sufficient
-2 Lysandre - with increased deck speed, dependency upon these "defensive" card can decrease
-2 Super Rod - can be replaced by a more efficient Supporter
-3 Exp. Share - "lower" priority

+1 Ace Trainer to disrupt your opponent's hand
+1 Brock's Grit - to recover and recycle discarded Pokémon and Basic energy resources
+3 Evo Soda - to help get evolution Pokémon faster
+3 Level Ball - to help get Pokémon faster
+1 Teammates to get needed cards

2 other thoughts:

  • Have you ever considered using Call for Family (e.g., Skarmory) as a prefered starter? It's a bit bulkier than you current main starters and it can also help setup your bench.
  • As an alternative starter, have you considered Spinda which can also spread damage?
I hope you find these comments helpful.

Thanks Tux. I'm definitely going to try the suggestions above.... I have tried Skarmory in the past, might be worth looking into again.... Spinda I have tried multiple times with Gengar, M Alakazam, & M Tyranitar, also without much success. I'm going to stick with Trev for now, thanks again for the advice!
