Ruling Typhlosion ex and prime discard

Do you have to discard an energy card if you knock out the defending pokemon or if the defending pokemon has no energy cards ?

You do as much as you are able. So, you discard an energy from yourself, plus an energy on the Defending Pokemon (if it has any). You have to discard if possible.
