So, this was my third tournament ever if you include a prerelease. I was hoping to win it all because I had been testing my deck for a while now and it seemed really good. Also, 90% of the seniors were playing Zekeels, so I thought Terrakion/Groudon should easily win. Turned out to be wrong, but I had a fun surprise at the end.
I get there and walk around talking to people. I see about 5 people with VVV and spaz out but then realize they're all in masters (phew). I try to get some trades going but most people were busy writing decklists. Oh well. Pairings go up about a half hour after I get there (and I notice Aaron Zheng on the list and freak out, but I didn't have to play him ).
Round 1 vs. Arjun with Zekeels
I start Terrakion and he goes first. I have my normal set up, but make an interesting move early on and play Groudon down (which I almost never do until the end if I don't lead with it). He gets three eels going very quickly and I struggle to KO them with terrible hands. We both go into a bad position and one point and neither of us get supporters for like 6 turns straight. Eventually, the match gets going again normally. I bring up Groudon and nab a couple of KO's with it, who procceds to get owned by Mewtwo. He has an eviolite, but I get the triple pluspower so I can Two-Hit Ko it. The match continues until we each have one prize. I N away both of our hands so he's in a tight position. However, he gets a PONT, and uses it to take all the cards left in his deck, and he needs an energy to attach to Zekrom for the win. It turns out the energy is prized and I win by him decking out.
1-0
Round 2 vs. Zekeels
Zekeels again...and of course he leads Tornadus EX and he goes first. I start Groudon and am in a horrible spot. I manage to get some stuff going and start KO'ing things, but he takes a lot of prizes with Mewtwo and I make a stupid mistake that leaves me with an empty Terrakion mid-game. I manage to make it pretty close by using N when he had one prize left about 3 times but I simply was too far behind on prizes to catch up.
1-1
Round 3 vs. Zekeels
ANOTHER Zekeels. I start Terrakion and he gets a Mewtwo going really fast. I N and think I am in a good position until I can't draw a supporter or energy 5 turns in a row. I manage to FINALLY get a Terrakion going but his Mewtwo with about 6 energy on it at this point simply destroys my field.
1-2
Round 4 vs. Terrakion/Landorus/Mewtwo EX
Finally not Zekeels, but this was like the most boring match of all time. I go first with Terrakion and set up normally. He doesn't get the T1 Abundant harvest so he sets up normally too. We begin to trade prizes in a completely non-special way. He drops a Mewtwo and gets some KO's but I nab an easy two prizes off of it because he doesn't have an Eviolite. He ends up with a few Landorus fully charged and starts hammering me, but I catcher up a damaged one on the bench for the final KO.
2-2
Final place: 8th
I broke even, which isn't too bad, but I was expecting to do better. I then trade for a Shaymin EX, which was nice.
Now time for the surprise. I realize the store I'm in sells Booster Boxes and my mom buys me one as a birthday present. I get home and open it, expecting nothing due to my always terrible luck.
...apparently I have the most amazing luck of all time for packs, because I pulled a FA Mewtwo EX in a single pack a month before this, and now I get:
Kyogre EX (meh, but it's still an EX)
Raikou EX (sweeeeeeet)
FA Darkrai EX (YEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAA)
Shiny Gardevoir (ooh shiny shiny)
I also pulled 4 of every trainer in the set including a bunch of holo ones. The FA Darkrai is what really seals the deal though, not to mention a secret rare.
Overall, it was a decent day, I'm going to enjoy my Darkrai even though I didn't do so well at the tournament
