Help Using Prize Cards in play

I just downloaded the TCG app. During the tutorial, when I knocked out an opponents Pokémon, I won a prize card (which was an energy card) ...and that prize cards was then put in my hand to play and apply the energy.

Is this how the real game is played? ....or did I dream this?

When you take prize cards they are added to your hand

The advantage to winning a Prize Card is not only that you get closer to winning, but you also end up getting something that might prove useful for the rest of the game.

They do go to your hand, but usually that's after knocking an opponent out. Which is usually after you attack. Which means itll be your opponents turn after you attacked.
So you shouldn't have been able to do that unless a pokemon's ability knocked out one of your opponents pokemon (like Greninja or Decidueye)
