What Are Essential Trainer Cards for any Deck?

Hello all,
Im new here. I used to play back when base and jungle set were out and recently felt an urge to play again. Unfortunately i dont have any of my old cards but it looks like they wouldnt be allowed anyways(didnt know about all these rules). So basically i want to know what trainer cards i should get. I bought a couple starter decks and have gone through about 25 boosters in the past month so ive got a decent selection but have been thinking about getting the red genesect collection just because i read the trainers are good. Would that still be a good choice or are they being retired anytime soon?

I suggest you don't get the Red Genesect Collection. There is literally only Ultra Ball that will be legal in the next rotation; i.e. everything is is going to be retired.

Thanks for the help. I had looked at that thread previously and a few of the staples are in the red genesect collection. So im assuming that list will change soon? Should i just get whats in the XY series?

Yeah, that list is going to change soon, probably when the rotiation happens. I suggest you just focus on XY for the moment. There is a good XY deck equivalent to the Red Genesect Collection - the Yveltal vs Xerneas Battle Arena Decks. It has a lot of XY-on staples:
4- Sycamore
4-Ultra Ball
1-Lysandre
2-Muscle Band

As well as things like Shauna, Switch, Letter, Lady and Retrieval which are used in decks occasionally.

Just went out and pricematched amazon at a nearby walmart. Got the battle arena for 22 bucks. Thanks again for keeping me from throwing away 20 bucks on the red genesect collection.
