What are the staples?

Sorry if this is the wrong place.

I just started playing and I'm trying to build a deck but not only do I not know how, I don't know what the "every deck needs them" card staples are. Is there a resource I can use or something?

In pretty much any deck you will find in varying amounts of 3-4 each:

Bebe's Search
Roseanne's Research

Bebe's you might find being fewer in number inside "SP" decks, but those will always have Roseanne's and a staple of their very own:
Cyrus's Conspiracy

Practically no SP deck is complete without their good buddy Cyrus.

As far as pokemon go, people look to the following for draw support:
Uxie
Claydol

These are not used to attack, but rather to sit out on your bench for quite a while. Now, using Uxie or Claydol depends on your deck. SP tend ot favor the basic buddy, Uxie(various amounts), while evolution decks seem to prefer Claydol (2-2, usually) with an uxie or two for a little more support in emergencies.

Last, but not least, there are energy cards. Almost every deck uses those.

And Luxury Ball. One free Pokemon is arguebly needed, even if you can only run one in your deck.

Agreed, and most decks run some sort of trainer draw engine in case the Power lock makes them too slow. I use 4 Pokedex Handy910 in pretty much every deck. Pokedrawer is arguably better in certain decks. Volkner's Philosophy is also possible.

If your going to play with a Lv.X, Azelf is a must, his power will let you get your Lv.X if the unlucky circumstance happens when it gets put in your prize cards.

Azelf

Also if a deck become very popular (blazeray), then you will almost alwats see a tech of a pokemon that generally OHKOs the main threat of that deck

You need a main attacker, tons of energies, and Trainer cards like rare candy and roxannes research(Probably the best)

S t a p l e s

What are the format's current "staples" -- that is a tough question.

Awhile back, I was trying to put together a good "skeleton" trainer group. A group of T/S/S that you could drop into any deck. It just wasn't appropriate.

Bebe's Search and Roseanne's Research -- highly used
Luxury Ball -- hard to see any reason not to play (at least) one in your deck
Uxie / Claydol -- great for draw power, but don't use 'em in a Scizor deck
GE Pachirisu -- Underused, and would not be considered a staple, but arguably "fits" in any deck (one energy to Call for Family and get 3 Pokemon!)

Other Staples -
"Draw" Supporters like Professor Oak's Visit, Underground Expidition
"Refresh" Supporters like Cynthia's Feelings and Looker's Investigation

When I make a deck, I choose my pokemon (main hitters, starters, draw, any "techs", etc) ----- I then figure out how many energy makes sense - I usually go with 12'ish... (I guess the World Champion Beedrill deck only had 6!)

I then look over a list of Trainers/Supporters/Stadiums to see which ones will best compliment my main strategy. I use this list ---

So, my answer to your question is "wow, that's a tough question"

Azelf
Not all the time. You can have a Lv.X as a tech, where it may not be needed, or perhaps you run 2-2. But I guess you can consider Azelf as a staple.

azelf usually isn't needed if you have 2 of every pokemon at least unless your deck fails with only using one of that pokemon

Don't forget the big one, Unown G. It is used in every deck that is competetive seeing as Gengar is a huge threat. Some decks require that you use Unown Q. Some people put it in Machamp. I put it in my Mega Min deck. (Yanmega SV, Shaymin Land X.) Other then those, every other staple has been named.

Nearly in every deck. Key word, nearly.

Claydol/Uxie (One of them, both, or a combo)
Unown G
Azelf
Roseanne's Research
Bebe's Search
Switch/Warp Point
Night Maintenance
Luxury Ball

SP deck would look a little different.

Crobat G
Luxray GL Lv.X
Cyrus's Conspiracy
TGI Energy Gain
TGI Poke Turn
TGI Power Spray
TGI SP Radar
Aaron's Collection

All of those in addition to some from the first list.

dmaster out.

If you have it Time-Space Distortion, but thats more of a luxury than a staple

^ NM/Palmers/Arons usually beats it but it gives a good chance of getting 1-2 pokemon but then again can you waste the space?
