Ruling What is a Tech?

Hi.

I was going to use the word "tech" in the card combo forum but then I thought that I had better ask what it means before I look silly. Would someone please define a tech Pokemon for me please.

P.S. my guess is that a tech is:
A Pokemon which uses a PokeBody or PokePower from the bench to assist a primary attacker or support a strategy ... but it's not meant to ever be the attacker.

A tech is usually a single pokemon (but can be used in mutliples sometimes) that helps a certain matchup or matchups. A tech doesn't have to use a pokepower or body but those are the most common techs.

An example of a tech is in Magmortar deck where Blaziken (PK) or Typhlosion (MT), there Poke-Power Firestarter helps set-up. Some tech's can attack, both Blaziken and Typhlosion have decent attacks, but techs like Minun (SW) are bad attackers. So yeah most techs have Poke-Powers or Bodies. Hope I helped!

^Typhlosion and Blazeiken wouldn't be consisdered techs. Minun would. If you ran typhlosion and had like a 1-0-1 blaze line, then it would be a tech.

Basically by how much room it takes up. Something like a 4-3-4 and 3-2-3 are main attackers. Same with 4-4 and 3-3. 2-2, 2-1-2, 1-0-1, and 1-1 (and something like 2-2-2, ect.) are usually back-up hitters, but some decks can classify those as secondary hitters as well. It all really depends on the deck as to what is a tech and what is a back-up hitter.

An easy difference is this: most decks don't supply many Energies for a tech to use, usually just 2 Multi/Scramble, IF the tech is even meant to attack.

Is "tech" short for "technique"? (Going by that abbreviation, I had the definition wrong all this time. I thought a tech was any move you make that takes advantage of the opponent's environment.)

Not really. Technique would be called in game skills. No idea where tech originated from to serve its defination in this game.

Technical roles are often limited or specialized as compared to a general roles. This might explain why the term has been adopted since a "Tech" does not need to do everything expected of a "general" Pokemon (or attacker) during the game. As mentioned above in another post A "Tech" may not be expected to evolve or even need any energy if it can sit on the bench and make use of it's Poke-Power for the rest of the members of the deck.
