What Is The Difference Between Energy Card Designs?

Hello out there! I am a 71 year old man who volunteered to inventory a friends son's old collection of Pokemon cards.Having no previous knowledge of these cards has made this quite a interesting experience.

I have spent much time looking for some information to no avail.
Hopefully someone on this forum may be able to help me.

I am making a list of approximately 200 energy cards.It appears that with
a card like the Energy Grass card as an example,there are a few different designs.like the card that has the dates and card set numbers.Then there are Grass cards with a white bar at the top and bottom with the date in small type at the bottom right corner.The next Energy card has a white border at the top and a green border at the bottom with the date and Pokemon. All the other Energy cards in the binder have the same differences.I don't know how to list these cards or what to name them?

I apologize for this long question, but I sure hope can help me or point me in the right direction to get Pokemon help.

Some of the more recent ones probably have set numbers, for example Grass energy from the Generations set is 75/83. For ones that don't have set numbers, you would need to go by the years. I don't know of which years go with which sets unfortunately, but someone with more experience will probably be able to help.

To get a list of the set images, you can go to Pokémon's website: http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-tcg/trading-card-expansions/ then select the expansion you wish to see, then you'll see a card or two. The set image is on the lower right for all but some of the very old expansions. For many expansions there's even a printable checklist, if that would help you inventory things.

Here's an example of a card from Steam Siege: http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-tcg/pokemon-cards/xy-series/xy11/1/ The set icon looks like a circular gear on the lower right.


(I'm kinda new to posting on Pokebeach, if I'm not allowed to link to Pokémon.com's official website let me know and I can take the links down. I checked the rules and it said other sites were ok if they had content that this site doesn't have, which I don't think this site has scans that I know of.)

Hi The Guardian 118,Thank you for your much appreciated information. After asking the same questions in at least 4 different type of Pokemon forums,you are the first one to help me with my question.I am now going to try those links you sent me.

No problem, also I should have mentioned one other thing. Functionally, grass energy is grass energy. (Or whatever type you want to use for an example) It doesn't matter which set it is from, you can use any basic energy from any set when playing the game. It really only matters to collectors who want the old sets, or players who want to "Bling" out their deck with a variety of prints.
