If Magby is retreated, does the effect of the attack still continue until the end of the other player's next turn? Also, can Unown G block Sputter? Thank you.

The effect would continue until the end of your turn, even if he retreated.

It is also a field effect, and does not target a Pokemon, and thus, is not prevented by Unown G

The effect of the attack is placed on Magby; therefore as soon as it hits the bench, the effect ends. A Gust from your opponent in the turn directly after you use Sputter will end the effect; it's the same thing as Scyther's Swords Dance or any attack that tells you that you can't use it again next turn.

Q. If Magby Sputters on my opponent's turn, and I Knock Out Magby or Gust of Wind it out, does the effect end?
A. Yes if the Magby is Knocked Out the effect ends; it left play. Magby is the originator of the effect...in other words the effect of the Attack "resides" on Magby. If Magby leaves play or is Benched or Evolved, Pokémon Powers turn back on. Similar to Dark Arbok's Stare. (21JUN01 WotC Chat, after-Q29; 28JUN01 WotC Chat, Q13)

Sputter was an old mechanic that Wizards didnt concoeve of having a player affected by an attack or ability.

Sputter places an effect on the player, so Sputter stays even if it is benched, or KOed. Same as Gardevoir's Psychic Lock, or Mesprits, Power Lock, even if they get benched, or removed from play, the effect stands until the specified duration has passed.
