I haven't been collecting or playing since december of last year, can someone tell me what the tcg is like right now and what i would need to do to get back in the swing of things?

SPs dominate,Flygon LV.X is the new most valuable card, the BDIFs are
Gengar
Machamp
Speedrill
Luxape
Dialga G
That's just a simple summary look under what won nats, for more info and under what do you think will win more worlds for more info too. Hope I helped.

^ Don't listen to him, his list is flawed.

Flygon Lv.x is the most overhyped card, and it's really not that great. Luxray Lv.x is probably the most valuable card.

As for the BDIF's here's a rough tier list.

Tier 1

Luxape
Legos
Gengar

Tier 2

SP tech
Beedrill
Flygon
Dialga G
Machamp

Tier 3

I'm not going to bother with this one. :p

^Dont listen to him, his list is even more flawed -.-

Seriously, a lot of the tiering is based on guessing work. Luxray/Infernape (SP) won the US Nationals, Gengar and Machamp saw high showings in the lower catagories. Palkia G and pals, Dialga G and pals, Flygon, Kingdra, Luxray/Gallade (SP) have racked up wins in other countries. And then there are decks like Beedrill, Dark Gardevoir/Gallade, Gyarados, Magnezone, Porygon-Z, BlazeTran and Dusknoir who pop up every now and then.
Ofcourse, it does differ by region.

To give you a different kind of answer, the current format is based on SPEED! The faster you set up, the more likely you are to win.

Current decks tend to be about 20 pokemon, 14 energy, and 26 Trainers supporters and stadiums. SP decks have less pokemon and more trainers.

Nearly all decks based around stage 2s run 4 rare candies, Broken Time-Space, or both. Also, stage 2 lines typically look like 4 basics, 2 stage 1, and 4 stage 2. There are exceptions, of course.

Most decks run with poke-power based draw strategies. As such, GE Claydol and LA Uxie are both about $20 even though they are just regular rares.

The game has been in a period of unconstrained power creep lately. Each set is more ridiculously powerful than the last. And it doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon. Therefore, if you buy cards, one of the most recent sets is a good idea.

Be careful not to buy cards from EX sets or foreign language cards as they are restricted for tournaments (For now you can use up to 6 japanese cards, but you must have translations)

I agree. Speed is the 2nd most valuable thing in Pokemon TCG next to consistentsy. Then comes power.
Anyway, yes, speed is VERY important. Palkia G, Dialga G, and Luxape builds all rely on outspeeding their opponent.
I ran Luxape at US Nats and was 3-3, and I lost to a GeChamp, Speedrill, and Flygon, all of those heavily played decks that are at least Tier 2.
First match: GeChamp
I draw and attach 2 luxray. Her Turn: googleanne for Baltoy and fighting, attachs {P}and pitch-darks. i do roseanne on my next turn for a baltoy myself, and put it down
her turn: plays broken time, baltoy-claydol with broken, comics, rare candys into gengar, brokens a Champ down, bebe's a claydol, put down baltoy, evolve claydol, SECOND cosmic, brokens ANOTHER claydol cosmic......power spray. she attachs to champ, retreats gengar, TAKE OUT luxray.
my turn: well i have toxitank+lucario out, so KO right back
her turn: shadow room stunktank G
my turn: poketurn and KO, gengar fainting spell......tails

...it might seem like imm winning, but i eventually had to use INFERNAPE and this turned out 2 be a mothergechamp, w/nido
it helped lategame and i lose
Because of her SPEED, and Claydols.
The details were hazy, i did power alot more than i said, by the way

speedrill is good bc of SPEED
machamp is bad but i won nats cause the player played it w/the right strategy: SPEED for the donk win. i heard finals were like 5 min long

as far as decks go, i think DarthPika covered it.

I agree that Luxray is prolly the BCIF, but the card that is worth the most money is FLYGON LV.X. Yes it is overhyped but if you look anywhere Flgyon is the only LV.X topping out at $40(except MAYBE Uxie LV.X). Also how is Legos a tier one and Machamp a tier two. And you say my list is flawed, shame on you.

Only idiots are willing to lay down that much money for a piece of cardboard. >.>

But the same can be said for made up tier lists. With the exeption of 1 or 2 decks, all tier lists wil be incorrect.

I based that tier list off nats performances. Machamp failed, while Legos and Luxape did very well. Speedrill beats just about everything but those top 3/4 decks so it's tier 2. Machamp loses to almost all those top decks but usually beats the tier 3 decks, so it's low tier 2.

Luck, personal skill and all that not involved. Also, USA only, thus its only for one part. Therefore your list fails just like any other one does.

The Tier list is usually put together based on the current meta which is different worldwide. So it's quite hard to put together an accurate Tier list.
