I am new to all this so bear with me on the newbie questions.
Where is everyone buying energy cards? How many different energy type cards are there? I don't see them in any packs. What about trainer cards, support, item etc?
Is ebay really the best place to go?
I have a legendary treasures booster box on preorder which will hopefully have some decent cards.

Booster packs don't come with energy anymore, you can get energy out of starter decks or most online card shops. Supporters, trainers and items all come in packs but your prob best off just buying the singles online when you get energy most are 25-30c each except a few popular ones.

eBay is good but prob not the best place. You could look at troll and toad, they have decent prices useualy.

RE: where to buy energy cards, support, trainer cards.

i just bought elite trainer boxes. They come with 7 booster packs, 6 damage counter dice, 1 coin flip di, poison and burn counter, a box to hold cards, and the plasma blast comes with sleeves as well. both also have 5 of each basic energy. So 2 is generally enough for most decks. Since most decks run some sort of special energy or low energy counts. The only energy you might need more of is water, since blastoise uses from 12-14 water energy. Either way look into getting those. Its a nice start for a new player. Plus all the supplies it comes with are useful.

I picked up one of each, and got some nice pulls from the packs.

Supporters i buy from amazon somewhere, or my local card shop. 4 juniper, 4 N and like 3 skyla are good standard supporters to pick up. You can pick up double counts to allow mutiple decks to be made, but you may also pull support cards so 1 set might be enough. Colress and bianca are also nice supporters to have 1 or 2 of.

Item cards are a bit of a toss up, but mostly singles are generally the best way to go. Most decks like rare candy, pokeballs of some sort. Ultra balls and level/heavy balls are most commonly used. A hand full of decks use max potion. Some decks use hypnotoxic laser. Switches and floatstones are a must in most decks.

special energy are also important to pick up eventually. Most used are blend energy, there are 2 types, and double colorless energy. They help many decks succeed, where they would fail without those special energy.

Once you decide what kind of deck you want to build for your son, post a thread with a starting point and people can help you decide what cards you need to pick up for the deck to function properly.

Thank you both that is extremely helpful. It looks like toad has reasonable prices on all the singles. I will be buying an elite box also. This should help get me started.

RE: where to buy energy cards, support, trainer cards.

Noting that eBay often has much better prices on Ultra Rares than T&T. I generally only use T&T when I'm buying a lot of very inexpensive cards at once.

I am getting started myself but for getting a solid base of trainer cards, my research led me to the Red Genesect Collection. You can get two of them for 30-40 USD and with two you will have around 70-80% of the staple Trainers most decks use.

I ended up buying the plasma blast trainer kit. It came with 7 booster packs, 5 of each energy, playmat, coin, damage counters, poison, burn counter. It was around 30 bucks. Then in a combination of troll toad and ebay I spent about another 40 bucks getting all my item, trainer, support, energy cards. All in all it's pretty reasonable if you shop around. I also pre ordered the Legendary Treasures booster box. I will probably order another one. I found a guy on ebay selling sealed boxes for 85 and free shipping. It's a price I don't think I can pass up on.

I also bought the Plasma blast kit and it came with 8 booster packs. Plus the trainers and extra energy cards I also purchased I am all set to play. We opened the boosters and now have enough cards for both of us to play. I was really surprised we had that many cards that were playable, but it worked out nicely. My son is really enjoying it and I can't wait for the 2 booster boxes of legendary treasures to arrive. I have to say the holo cards are pretty cool we got quite a few in the packs. I wouldn't mind having a few of those in a plaque or something on my desk to display.
