I'm very confuse right now on which one to choose from. Both cost the same and the only differences are LCD 17" and 15" inch and one comes with Quad and the other with I7.

Should I upgrade:
1) The ram to 6GB or 8GB or stay 4GB
2) For M17x processor to Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Extreme Mobile Processor QX9300 (2.53GHz/ 1066 FSB/ 12MB Cache)

or

3) For M15x processor to Intel(R) Core(TM) I7-920XM Mobile Processor Extreme Edition (2GHz, turbo up to 3.2GHz, 8MB L3 Cache)

I'm not much of a hard core gamer but I do wish to have an Alienware for my own.

Please give me recommendations about these two different spec. Any advices on upgrade or suggestions will be taken seriously.

M15x Spec
- Metallic Space Black Base
- Intel(R) Core(TM) I7-820QM Mobile Processor (1.73GHz, turbo up to 3.06GHz, 8MB L3 Cache)
- 4GB Dual-channel 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM (2 x 2GB)
- 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
- Slot Load Fixed Blu-ray BD-ROM / DVD + /-RW Combo Drive
- 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 260M

M17x Spec
- Metallic Space Black Base
- Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad Processor Q9100 (2.26GHz/ 1066 FSB/ 12MB Cache)
- 4GB Dual-channel 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM (2 x 2GB)
- 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
- Slot Load Fixed Blu-ray BD-ROM / DVD + /-RW Combo Drive
- Single 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 260M

Thanks for all your help.

It really all depends. If you are a computerholic, who will be running a bunch of different stuff, go with the increaased RAM. If you are a lighter user who plays lots of games, and does research, go with the other one.

On the ram stay with 4Gb unless you get 64bit windows. 32bit can only handle up to 3.3Gb, if I remember right.

After a lot of brainstorming I think I will go for the M15x with:

M15x Spec
- Metallic Space Black Base
- For M15x processor to Intel® Core™ I7-920XM Mobile Processor Extreme Edition (2GHz, turbo up to 3.2GHz, 8MB L3 Cache)
- 4GB Dual-channel 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM (2 x 2GB)
- 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
- Slot Load Fixed Blu-ray BD-ROM / DVD + /-RW Combo Drive
- 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260M

which cost around $5,300 inclusive of GST from Singapore.

The only difference between the two is the processor. Go with the M15, it's got much more processesing power than the other.

Also, don't bother upgrading RAM. 32-bit Operating Systems can't use more than 4gig. Besides. I couldn't imagine laptops having room for too many RAM slots, making 64-bit OS's sort of redundant.

The vista is running on 64-bit that is why I making asking suggestion to get a 6GB or a 4GB....

Since it comes in vista 64-bit.... it would be a waste if the ram is at 4GB....

Thanks a lot for the help... now I know which one to get...

After a few days of intense headache and been through a lot of thinking. I have decided on these specs. Please rate :D

M15x Spec
- Metallic Space Black Base
- For M15x processor to Intel® Core™ I7-920XM Mobile Processor Extreme Edition (2GHz, turbo up to 3.2GHz, 8MB L3 Cache)
- 6GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM (1 x 2GB + 1 x 4GB)
- 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
- Slot Load Fixed Blu-ray BD-ROM / DVD + /-RW Combo Drive
- 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260M

Looks pretty good. But I'd get Windows 7 when it comes out in a few weeks and replace Vista. ;p

Other than that, looks like a very hardcore, and very expensive, gaming laptop. :D

I'm from Asia. If you are from the US the laptop will come with Window 7 coupon. Which means you can upgrade it for free or just have to pay for a small fees.

Here in Asia we have no window 7 coupons and we cant even get our name on the Alien Nameplate. Which is a very sad thing.

I was planning to get the M17x from the US but they don't provide any shipping to Asia. :(

I'm from Australia, Windows is screwing us over as well. Do you know how much they're charging us for Windows 7? $300AUD, when Americans are only being charged around abouts $150AUD tops. They aren't giving Australians the coupons, and they aren't giving us the Family Packs either. Nor are they giving us the student discounts... =/

I would personally get a mac. They arent as much of money hogs as windows is. They may be more expensive, but they have horrible deals.
Anyways, for your problem, I suggest getting windows 7. Hopefully it will be decent.

The new Mac OS only costs $30, I really don't know how Windows can justify their rediculous pricing.

$50 is ridiculous?

Yes it is running on extreme. I hope it is good.

Others suggested that I get the M17x which is running on Dual Nvidia Graphic card and a Quad Extreme. Which cost way more than the M15x.

gtx 260 will run just about any game, dont worry about dual. dual (known as SLI) is really only for games when you are playing at extremely HIGH resolutions. suited for screens 28"+

your Mextreme processor will handle just about any video/audio editing you may be doing as certainly more than enough for gaming as well. lol.

the 6gb of ram is definitely unneeded as you really only need 4GB unless you are running a server or a folding farm.

Thanks for the advice. I will bring that into account. I have been surfing a lot lately and found out that both Alienware m15x and m17x encounters countless problems.

The review on both laptop weren't as great as I imagine.

For the mean time I think I should just sit back and wait. :(

hmm, would you mind linking me to the reviews? because the only thing i would imagine being bad is heat issues and win vista being installed as the primary OS.

$300 for the basic edition of Windows 7 is ridiculous, yes.
then use a OS that has the support range that windows has.

oh wait...there is none.

quit trying to flame on win7. it is perhaps the best OS to be released since XP.

M$ finally did something right. before i couldnt run CS:S on my laptop with vista (obv clue that the system is clogged), whereas on win7, it runs perfectly.

win7 is what the commercials/press has been putting it out to be. it is that good. if you havent used it, then dont bother to comment.

im currently running win7 ulty build7600 ver6.1

also, idk if linking is allowed, but this is an awesome deal for those in college ;)

Hi
I recommend you get a imac. it just works. and the processing power of the imac is way better than PC. but troubleshooting a mac is trouble. also learning how to use mac programs can make it that extra step harder for someone who have never used or know much about a mac before.
the PC is a cheaper way in the end for gamers and general Personal computing users.
