Why are the pokemon EX only legends?

I'm pretty sure that's just how they're starting it out right now, but eventually we should get non-legendaries and evolutions as EXs too.

Very possible, but it begs what they'll do with the "evolution" legendaries, to make them worth the evolution. Will they treat these EX pokemon as basics as well, as some previous sets have, or what can they do to keep them competitive. Our current EX pokemon are pushing 180 HP, higher than any stage 2 in the format right now. If we were to get a Magnezone EX, or a Garchomp EX, or something similar, we would either be looking at over 200 HP, or some sort of ability that makes them warrant the extra trouble of evolution.

I like how some of the EX are proving to be worth two prizes, unlikes the early versions of the original ex and the majority of the legends, but I haven't the slightest idea as to how that will work out with an evolution, and especially a stage 2 line.

Why have all Full Art Pokemon been legends? That's just what happened. Probably because of the selling value of these cards. Many people (especially little kids) really like Legendary Pokemon and Pokemon knows that, so they figured this would be a good way to make money.

Yeah, don't read too much into it at this point in time. For Ruby/Sapphire, the "theme" was that every ex card was a spiritual successor to some classic Haymaker Pokemon (Scyther, Chan, Buzz).

yea but we also got ex's from the r/s days of alot of fun and random pokemon some legendary and some classic pokemon.all starters had their final evolution as ex's so hopefully we see them this time again

Why wouldn't they start out with non legends as EX's cards? It seems to me that only Legendary Pokemon are going to be featured as an EX card. =D

Hopefully bumping this thread is alright, but with Entei as a confirmed EX for Dark Rush (presumably alongside Suicune and Raikou), the trend seems pretty definite that all, or at least a complete majority, of EX cards are going to be legendaries. What a complete turnabout from the original set of exes and what a peculiar situation this puts EX cards in -- that is, while Stage 1 and Stage 2 ex cards existed, there are so far no Stage 1 or Stage 2 EX cards. Which might be just as well, I wouldn't dare to even hazard a guess whether such a card might break the 200 HP barrier.

And it sort of sucks, if you ask me. EX now seems to be an immediate successor to the LEGEND cards rather than the Prime/LvX/ex continuum (of sorts), which means you'll get more of this 'inflation' where only legendaries are likely to get fantastic collectable cards and your favorite non-legendary has less and less of a chance of getting a powered-up EX variant with over-the-top artwork.

Bleh I hope they don't break the 200 HP mark O_O. Can't be 1 shotted and they do devastating damage ;_;. The stage 2's will come...they can't do legendaries for too long because they will just run out. We have about 6 in each set...ya...we have a limited amount of legendaries.

I can honestly see them just adding a new gimmick only for non-legendaries when EXs stop being the new thing to move sales.

I was shocked enough about a 180 HP basic...

Wasn't it released a time back that Gallade or Gardevoir EX were going to be released?

Yeah, I think both at that. Those should be coming around soon, hopefully.

Personally, Legendaries are more marketable as EX's. Little kids (Pokemon's main demographic) go crazy over legendaries, so this is a smart thing business-wise.

Yeeeeep, that's pretty much it. Money talks a lot. Kids love shiny cards, kids also love Legendary Pokemon, so why not put both and get more money? lol

I would be very angry if this was another basic-only mechanic(Full Arts were as well) :/

Little Kid: MUMMY MUMMY! THATS A VIWIZON FWOM MAI GAME! I WANNT IT I WANT IT MUMMY PLEASE MUMMY MUMMY PLEASE I WANT NOBLE VICTORIES
<tantrum>
<Buys booster box>

Do you get me?
Pokemon is aimed at little kids, legendaries are like the biggest thing to kids.

^ Lol if that was my kid, I'd slap him for trying to get me to buy a $100 booster box and whining about it. :-\

I believe the tl;dr here is:

MARKETING SCHEME TARGETED TOWARDS CHILDREN.

HOWEVER, you can argue that the Starter Pokemon evolutions should be made into EXs as well, since they're as popular, if not more than, as the Legendaries. To be honest, you'd recognize Tepig more easily/quickly than Kyurem, merely because the Tepig line is advertised much more than Kyurem.

Yeah, and I don't buy the idea that the legendaries are actually that big a deal for kids -- the mascots and some of the heavy hitters, sure, but I'm sure Emboar EX would be more marketable in that regard than Entei EX, and if that is what they were intending I feel it more likely you'd see the former as a Dark Rush card sooner than we are Entei. There just seems to be an active effort to limit EX cards to legendaries, and I'm not convinced that it's just for marketing's sake.

I agree. Especially begin a basic WITH large damage dealing attacks, it can deal damage and endure damage and with all the past formats gone , machamp, mewtwo aren't around to stall them. It may make Pokemon a matter on money, whoever can afford more EX cards.
