Why do Americans call Football Soccer?

Why does the UK call Soccer Football? 
I've always wondered this too. What's football (the tackling kind) called in the UK?

“They (rest of the world) call it football, and we (North Americans) call it soccer.” isn't true.

Also, South Africa, New Zeland, and Australia also use soccer.
