Win-A-Booster Box Tournament Report
Hello Pokébeach members! I’m here with an epic report from this Win-A-Booster Box tournament.
I’m a Senior, but all age divisions were mashed up, so it didn’t matter. It was 4 rounds of Swiss (best-of-three, though) and then Top 4. As you know, I am Portuguese, so the last thing I wanted was to face Igor Costa, the World Champ. The tournament started around 11 A.M and I was playing Darkrai/Hydreigon. I will leave the list in the end of the article.
On to the tournament!

Round 1 VS …. None other than Igor Costa! (Eelektrik/Raikou/Terrakion/Mewtwo)
So, I knew I was screwed. However, I know how Igor plays, so I’ll give it a shot.

Game 1 – I think I start with Sableye and he starts with a Tynamo active and a Terrakion benched (in fear of the donk). We both set-up, but I think he took a prize with Raikou EX on a Deino. It’s 6-5 on his favor and I have 2 Hydreigons set-up. He has a Terrakion (he only plys 1 Terrakion and 2 Fighting) on the bench with a Fighting and a Lightning on it, so I catcher it and proceed to OHKO him with my Hydreigon, knowing that I can’t start killing Eels unless I get rid of his Terrakions. He then proceeded to Super Rod it back into his deck along with the fighting. He used juniper and got Terrakion + Fighting + Catcher. Seriously?! He KO’s my Darkrai (I had 2, 1 without Eviolite) and on my turn I just KO his Terrakion with Hydreigon. From here, I never play a Supporter when I don’t really need to, so he thinks I have nothing and keeps discarding his Ns with Junipers/Ultra Ball. Now I just keep KO’ing his Eels and healing everything as he cannot KO my Darkrais and is in a Supporter drought. 1-0

Game 2 – I don’t get a great start, and I don’t remember much about this game but I know that I lost with 1 prize left. 1-1

Game 3 – This was Sudden Death, because time was called as we were shuffling. So, I go first (we rolled the dice to decide) and start with Darkrai EX and he starts with Mewtwo. At this point my only shot is to attach 3 Energies and trying to N him to 1 card before he can power up his Mewtwo. I do not have an N, so I attach and pass. On his turn he puts down Raikou EX, attaches to it, and Ns. I get 1 energy. I attach and pass. He just passes, as he has no energy. I draw, and it’s an energy. I attach and Night Spear. He uses Switch to Raikou and plays N. I draw a Juniper. I use the Juniper and get Catcher FTW. 2-1
WOW! I won against the World Champ lolz. Igor ended up going 2-2, losing against another Senior. Crazy!

Round 2 VS Samuel Ramadas (Eel/Terrakion)

Game 1 – I just set-up and take control. There’s nothing very interesting.
1-0

Game 2 – I set-up and take the control again, and I have the game in hand. I forgot that my Catcher was prized so I Junipered my hand in search for the Catcher cuz I would win if I got it. I deck out in a stupid misplay. Also, if I had keep attaching energys I could just KO his Raikou EX with Mewtwo’s X-Ball.
1-1

Game 3 – Sudden Death. I start with Mewtwo and X Ball his Zekrom EX to death. I also N’d him when I had 2 energy on the Mewtwo.
2-1

Round 3 VS Paulo Silva (Eel/Rayquaza EX/Raikou EX)

Game 1 – I set-up and he draws dead for like 6 or 7 turns. I win pretty easily.
1-0

Game 2 – I start with Sableye and can’t get any basics on Turn 3. He benches me with Raikou EX.
1-1

Game 3 – I don’t get the best start, and he makes it impossible for me to set-up with Raikou EX. I never get a Hydreigon up.
1-2

Round 4 VS Diogo Caeiro (Mirror)
If I win, I get toTop 4. If I lose, he gets to Top 4.

Game 1 – I get the most ridiculous start ever. I don’t draw anything for approximatedly 8 turns.
0-1

Game 2 – We both get set-up with 2 Hydreigons. Then, I was about to Catcher kill his Hydreigon with mine but I realize that if I do that, he can KO me back with his and I lose all my energy. So instead, I just attack with my Darkrai on his, waiting for him to make the mistake I was about to make. Next turn he Catcher Kos my Hydreigon with his, and I respond with mine. But he only has 1 Energy in play, so he can’t Ko me back. I Catcher KO his other Hydreigon and seal the game.
1-1

Game 3 – Sudden Death… Again.
He starts Shaymin and I start Sableye. I go first. I Ultra Ball for Shaymin (since we both thought that Shaymin did 180 in Sudden Death) and attach to sableye. I N us to 1. He attaches and passes. I attach a Dark to Shaymin and pass. He passes. I topdeck a Blend and supposedly do 180 FTW.
2-1

I got on Top 4 so I’m playing against my Round 3 Opponent again.
This was the best Best-of-three series I ever played. Really, this matches were so awesome!

Game 1 (craziest game I have ever seen) – I don’t remember much until the part that I have 6 prizes and he has 1. My field consists of a active Darkrai with 3 energy (1 Blend) and a Zweilous. I bench a Shaymin EX with Eviolite and Evolve to Hydreigon. I attach an Energy to Hydreigon and Catcher an Eel. I N him down to 1. I KO his eel and do 30 to his benced Tynamo. At this point I thought I had lost and really was just playing for the fun. On his turns he just promotes Raikou and tries to Thunder Fang. He fails. I Catcher his other Eel and take a double KO on his Eel and Tynamo. I’m really making a comeback!. I just night spear until he loses. He tries to stall with Thunder Fang but it does not work since I got rid of that Raikou in 2 Turns.
1-0

Game 2 – I get a very bad start and he prevents me from getting an Hydreigon into play. He wins 6-0.
1-1

Game 3 – I can only remember when he is with 3 prizes and I am with 3 too. I have 2 Darkrais and 7 Energy on the field. I attack on his Raikou (I think) to bait him into KO’ing my Darkrai, so I can N him to 1 and then put Shaymin down. He takes the bait so he goes down to 1 prize. Now it’s where my misplay begins. I had a Catcher in hand, so I should have Catcher KO’d an Eel as he would have had no way of KO’ing me or to stall for a turn. However,I was so focused on Rayquaza that I couldn’t see my other outs. I thought I needed to KO his Rayquaza with my Hydreigon. I do the misplay and N him down to 1 and me to 3. I do draw a Catcher, indeed. However, I was so focused on Rayquaza that I still didn’t notice that I should Catcher. So I KO his Rayquaza. If he draws a Fire energy of the top of his deck, he wins because he had a Rayquaza with 2 Lightning on it.

Overall, a very nice tournament for me. I beat the World Champion and I got to play very good games. I also learned that I should think more carefully about my options. That costed me the 2nd place or 1st place.
I got third or fourth, I don’t remember. I got 2 boosters and pulled a Garbodor. Not bad!
I think that Hydreigon is Tier 1 together with Rayquaza/Eels. Both are very strong, and it’s hard to counter them.

Decklist:

3-1-3 Hydreigon
3 Darkrai EX
1 Shaymin EX
1 Sigilyph
1 Mewtwo
1 Registeel (I'll just go ahead and say that this is useless. You'll probably never use it. It's so situational. I'll take it out.)
2 Sableye

4 Juniper
4 N
2 Cheren
2 Random Receiver
4 Ultra Ball
3 Rare Candy
4 Catcher
4 Max Potion
3 Dark Patch
3 Eviolite

7 Darkness Energy
4 Blend Energy GRPD

LOL.
That sort of happened to me at a BR.
I didn't want to get paired with Glace.
Round 2: Glace

Yeah... that sucks. It's very unlikely, but it always happens xD

Then after that I got paired with the guy who wanted to battle me because his deck was anti 593462.
I went 2-2 that day.

Sounds like you got very lucky that day xD

I know the feeling of getting bad pairings lol, I go to the tournament in my area and am like "please don't let me play against Michael Diaz or Sam Chen, I've heard their both really good."

Round 2: Michael Diaz with one of my worst matchups, Accelgor/Empoleon. I actually almost won somehow.
Round 3: Sam Chen

>_>

Anyway, nice job on beating Igor! Too bad you got unlucky at the end, but a Garbodor is pretty sweet.

A guy who got 2nd at worlds played FluffyChomp. Sad world.
Guess he already has the invite so it doesn't matter but still.

Even though this was a while ago Nice job!
