I'm new here (first time posting) and trying to get some improvement suggestions for my son's deck. He's in the Juniors and will be competing in events at World's and/or the Boston Open, so we still have to go with the current format, not XY on.

Current Decklist:

Pokemon: 14
  • 2 Manectric EX
  • 2 M Manectric EX
  • 3 Yveltal EX
  • 1 Malamar EX
  • 2 Darkrai EX
  • 3 Yveltal
  • 1 Seismitoad EX
Trainers/Supporters/Stadiums: 30
  • 2 Professor Sycamore
  • 2 N
  • 1 Skyla
  • 1 Colress
  • 1 Lysandre
  • 2 Pokemon Fan Club
  • 1 Teammates
  • 1 Team Flare Grunt
  • 1 Xerosic
  • 4 VS Seeker
  • 2 Muscle Band
  • 1 Head Ringer
  • 1 Startling Megaphone
  • 2 Manectric Spirit Link
  • 1 Computer Search
  • 3 Professor's Letter
  • 1 Energy Switch
  • 2 Ultra Ball
  • 1 Shadow Circle
Energy: 16
  • 4 Double Colorless Energy
  • 8 Darkness Energy
  • 4 Lightning Energy

Strategy:

The strategy is pretty straighforward - get Yveltal EX or Malamar EX loaded up with enough energy to OHKO any opposing Pokemon. Use M Manectric EX of Baby Yveltal to get energy back from the discard pile.

This deck with a slightly different deck list (without Seismitoad Ex) did get him top cut in a Spring Regionals, but I'm sure there are ways to make it better. We were considering cutting the energy a bit, but this way he could theoretically OHKO a Wailord deck even if all of his double colorless has been discarded.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

you don't need so many energy. you can get some back with Manectric and/or baby Yveltal.
try 6 darkness, 3 lightning. maybe 1 less DCE if people run a lot of hammers.
2 VS Seekers should be enough.
fill the slots with extra sycamore, colress, or shauna for more draw support.
add 1-2 more stadiums. just to compete in stadium wars.
think about another head ringer (since Yveltal EX will do more damage).
you could drop 1-2 Professors Letter.
think about a AZ or Cassius to clear a pokemon of damage or to get it off the field.

Thanks for your response and suggestions. We will try the deck out with a couple fewer energies and more draw support. AZ might be a really good addition. Any ideas for helpful stadiums, or should we stick with just the Shadow Circle?

I personally was hoping he'd go with Night March, because it seems more consistent, but he likes Yveltal better.

One of my kids qualified for Worlds, the other will just play side events and the Boston Open.

First of all I would like to say I love Yveltal/Mega manectric and there is some stuff I would like to suggest
-1 darkrai ex, he's mainly there for the free retreat and 1 darkrai gets the job done
-1 Malamar ex, sure his abilities cool but u don't want to really attack with him
+1 manectric ex, mainly for consistency purposes just so that it's easier to get ur mega manectrics out
+1 Seismitoad ex, starting with Seismitoad is great to slow your opponent down with some quaking punches

-1 Yveltal, energy acceleration is provided enough with two of them and the mega manectrics
+1 N, running 3 sounds good in this deck

-2 Pokemon fan club
+2 professor sycamore, 4 sycamore should definitely be a must

-1 team flare grunt, it's pretty unnecessary in this deck
+1 Lysandre, running two is great as you can bring up threats and eliminate them

-1 head ringer, again it's not necessary in this deck
+1 muscle band, 3 is great to have often to do that extra twenty damage

-2 professors letter, you'll find getting energy into your hand is easier than u think and 1 gets the job done
+1 energy switch, it's great in this deck as you can mess around with your energy a lot easier and increase deamge output with yveltal ex
+1 shadow circle, it's not necessary but it is nice to have

-2 darkness energy, getting energy onto the board is easy with both baby yveltal and mega manectric and 6 dark gets the job done
+2 ultra ball, it's good for throwing away energy to accelerate back

These are the suggestions I have in mind now obviously I have made a lot of them so feel free to agree or disagree with any suggestion I made and good luck to your son with this deck I hope you both have fun with it.

I played this alot back during cities last format, I actually pulled off the list and it ran excessively fast, now with mega turbo it's slow but whatever. here's a variation of the list I ran that decimated alot of players (I know that most kids won't understand there cards but it's all about having a good list that works, if they have a bad list they will never understand the mechanics of the game, get frustrated and eventually decided to quit, no excuse for consistency).

3-3 mega man or 4-3 (I tryed 2-2, it was terrible)
2 yveltal EX (I tryed 3, it made the deck clunky with pokemon and took away the demand to start with either baby y and or megaman first, which you should)
3 baby Y
2 shaymin EX
(I would like to take a minute to say 1 thing seismetoad is terrible, 1 DCE is not worth the dmg output you need for yveltal or the head ringer you have on manectric when you need the DCE for the assault laser ko, which head ringer is a heavily played card in all formats)

4 N
4 juniper
2 colress (10 card draw power, well 16 if you include ultra balling for shaymin, draw power gets everything you need into your hand, good-great draw power does more)
2 lysandre
4 Vs seeker
2 head ringer
3 switch
3 spirit link
2 battle compressor (puts energy in the discard, puts supporters in the discard, no supporters but a BC and vs seeker in hand means that you get to play any supporter out of your deck)
2 enhanced hammer
4 ultra ball

3 DCE
5 dark energy
5 electric energy

At this point I would say that I'm done and call this a skeleton, I would not recommend adding in any additional attackers as it does eliminate preferred starts, just like 4 virizion and 3 genesect you would rather have the speedy setup as it gets your attacker out substantially faster. After testing this with a friend for 4 months we came to the conclusion that 3-3 manectric was far superior to 2-2, 2-2 was never enough to have out as consistently as you would like to, even running more manectric over mega man is a good thing, assault laser wins more games in more ways then I can count, tools, shaymin, benched techs with float stone, etc. I wish I was going, I know of a few friends who are, work is the bread and butter of my bread and butter. Have fun but this is a very competitive event , even in the 8-man tournys alot of people take this very seriously.
