Strategy
My strategy behind this deck is to get as many Dark-type Pokemon out on the field as fast as possible. I included Zorua from LTR because of his "Ascension" attack letting me evolve straight into Zoroark on my first turn. It's mandatory that I go 2nd with this deck and get Zorua in my hand at the start. I include Sableye so I can junk hunt for whatever items I use up. I put in Hydreigon because of his "Dark Trance" ability allowing me to move energy around. Darkrai EX is for attack, bench damage and retreat cost. Help please. Thanks.

Hi LoneWolf2113,

Hydreigon seems to conflict with Zoroark since he is a Dragon type. I also assume that at HP 100 Zoroark will not survive a counter-attack to abuse Dark Trance. I would either remove the entire Hydreigon line or Zoroark if he is assumed to be the main attacker. Let me know which route you would like to take.

I would prefer to leave Zoroark in the deck. I get what you mean with the whole dragon conflicting with dark thing. My original thought process was that if I can get 6 dark pokemon out, I could do 120 with Zoroark for 2 Dark Energy and 140 with a Dark Claw on him and if he got knocked out, that my opponent takes only 1 prize rather than 2 for an EX. The thing with Hydreigon was that if I needed to retreat Zoroark, Darkrai EX's Dark Cloak makes retreating free and Hydreigon can just move the energy on Zoroark to something else that I put in the active spot. But, as you stated before, a drawback to Zoroark is that it only has 100 HP. What do you suggest if I were to remove the Hydreigon line.

Hi LoneWolf2113,

Went with your original list and highlighted modifications in bold.

Pokemon (12):
  • 3 Zorua LTR
  • 3 Zoroark LTR
  • 3 Darkrai EX DEX
  • 3 Sableye DEX

Trainers (36):
  • 4 Professor Juniper
    [*]3 N
    [*]3 Colress
    [*]2 Random Receiver
    [*]2 Virbank Stadium
  • 3 Dark Claw
  • 3 Ultra Ball
    [*]4 Hypnotoxic Laser
    [*]4 Dark Patch
    [*]2 Bicycle
    [*]3 Energy Switch
    [*]1 Super Rod
    [*]1 Tool Scrapper
[*]1 Dowsing Maschine/Computer Search (your choice here)

Energy (12):

  • [*]2 Double Colorless
  • 10 Dark

Reasons for modifications:

Colress and N:
Four seemed too much since Colress can be a dead card in the start and N can be a dead card at the end of the match when you have already taken multiple prizes.

Random Receiver:
Much better than Skyla in this deck since you have decent direct draw to get stuff out fast and he ensures a draw supporter. Also remmeber that Sableye can Junk Hunt for it when you need a supporter to refresh your hand.

Virbank Stadium:
Works real well with Hypnotoxic Laser. Based on your Zoroark the extra 30 damage from poison can enable Zoroark to ohko Pokémon Ex. Even if he is ohkoed next turn it will be an uneven prize trade to your advantage.

Hypnotoxic Laser and Dark Patch:
You do want four of them. It is nice to have Zoroark and Darkrai Ex ready to attack at the same time. Allows you to come back from a knock out and maintain offensive. Both can also be Junk Hunt targets but you want more of them anyways. These two cards are the heart and soul of darkness decks ;).

Bicycle:
Item-based draw is just too good to pass on. Also ensures that you have fast access to your deck and Sableye covers the access to parts of your discard pile.

Energy Switch:
Switch energy around to have either a turn two Darkrai Ex or a turn two Zoroark. It makes the offense line a lot faster and acts like a limited proxy for your original Hydreigon line. This one can be Junt Hunted too.

Tool Scrapper:
You are not completely reliant of Pokémon abilities but Garbador is still a pain and you also want a means to get those G-Boosters in VirGen decks into the discard once attached to a Genesect. It is just one since you can Junt Hunt for it unless it is prized.

Dowsing Maschine/Computer Search:
Your choice of an Ace Spec. Dowsing Maschine is more versatile after the first few turns while Computer Search allows you to search the deck for whatever you need. Personally I prefer Dowsing Maschine because it becomes more versatile after a few turns.

Super Rod:
Reshuffle lost Darkness Pokémon and an occassional Darkness Energy back into the deck.

Double Colorless:
Since only Zoroark can use it efficiently and you can use Dark Patch with Dowsing Maschine and Sableye to fuel him with basic darkness energy fast. Left two in the deck if you want them. You can also take them out for one more basic darkness and one more N.

Hope this provides some help.

Thank you, DarkEspeon. I will make these changes to my deck. This is very helpful. I only want to change one thing. I am taking out a Super Rod and putting in another bicycle, N, or Dark Energy. I'm not sure which yet. My reasoning was that since the new X and Y sets are coming out on the 5th of next month, that means that Noble Victories is out of the format soon. I've also tested this deck on the PTCGO a few times and found that I've needed an N at the start and just couldn't draw into any. Thank you again for the help. My deck is much better now. It's nice to know that the PokeCommunity has people that are willing to help their fellow players in a way that is both nice and effective. I'll probably do much better now and may even get 1st in Senior division at the next City Champs in a couple of weeks. Maybe even advance to Top Cut. I guess we'll see. Thanks for helping me with my deck. I'll be posting more deck lists soon so please feel free to chime in.

Hi Lonewolf,

No problem. Happy to help a fellow darkness player. Super Rod was reprinted in one of the dragon sets. That means that it will still be in the format even if Noble Victories is rotated out. Regarding N I would suggest this:

- 1 Colress (good draw but might not help you to set up)
+ 1 N (good first turn draw and disruption late game)

You can still cut Double Colorless to add one Darkness and a third Bicycle if you need more draw. Mess around with these slight modifications to find out which ones suite you best. best luck with your deck :).
