  • evil_elf, while it's true that the target audience is younger people, the reason why Masters are the largest is because most of the Masters are the people who have stuck around since Pokemon started: 1998. They started with the series and grew up with it, and now they're staying with it.

That, and Masters generally have more freedom in buying cards than little children do. Would you rather buy your packs yourself or have to convince your parents instead?
evil_elf, I put it up on occasion of getting my 4000th post. And the reception has been generally positive, so I believe I'll keep it for a while.

For me, the easiest division to judge is the Seniors, not the Masters. Why is that? It's because usually we have anywhere between 30 and 40 Masters at a time in one tournament, whereas with Seniors it's...somewhere around 10. Juniors are even less (in size, but not in aggravation factor).
evil_elf, Florida has November regionals, so yeah. Gliscor/Yanmega may be good, but I don't know what people in Florida play right now. That's why I figured Mewpluff would be good, it has a good matchup against anything that might come. When I'm more familiar about what people play, then I can play rogue easily. Do you go to November regionals?
    evil_elf, In order:

Yes, juniors frustrate me, generally whenever they call me over to resolve an issue. It's usually because neither of them pay attention.

It depends on if I know the junior or not very well. There are a few guys I know in juniors that I will usually side with in an argument because I know they'll generally be telling the truth, but most of the time, I assume that neither is being completely honest (which, unfortunately, is usually the case) and make an impartial decision based on what I'm told.

    I've been judging since 2 Jan 2009 so...almost 3 years now.
    evil_elf, yep. Lots of it.

The Juniors is actually one of the hardest divisions to judge, because you have a lot less rulings questions and a lot more he-said-she-said situations. Juniors don't have a very good grasp of the game at all (in comparison to Seniors and Masters) and they tend to rush things a lot.
I'd say if you can judge Juniors well and resolve their disputes, you can do almost anything.
evil_elf, Well, there's another example of playing what you feel comfortable with, I don't feel comfortable playing a rogue for Battle Roads. I think it's a waste of time, I'll have to take it apart for next format, which comes right after Battle Roads (Well, we have November regionals, so I guess that wouldn't be the case). Even though I don't always play rogue, I never play top tier decks, at least to me, anyway.

Gliscor/Yanmega/Noctowl sounds good. Gliscor is the definition of rouge right now, and I have high hopes.
evil_elf, in regards to the 2 rulings questions, yes and yes again. I'm just citing examples of questions that might come up.

It definitely is fun - heck, anything that gives you a bit of power is fun. But when you're a judge, people look up to you to make the right calls and make the tournament run smoothly - there is a degree of responsibility involved.
Still, it's a great job to have since you have great company. And getting paid in packs can't hurt either. Free cards? Yes please.
evil_elf, there's no minimum age required to be a judge, however you need to be familiar with card rulings and how the basic flow of a turn works. You also need to be able to answer difficult (or possibly even stupid) questions should they arise.

Like, if I play PlusPower, then use Catcher to bring up a Gothitelle, does PlusPower lose the effect?
Or, can I use Junk Arm to pick up Professor Juniper from my discard?

    ...stuff like that.
And you need to be known as a very reliable capable person, so...the older, the better.
evil_elf, Ah, well it's better to play what you like than to play what's good. And yeah, I'm the leader of Team Rogue, even though I don't really play too much rogue. To make a rogue you need ideas, which is something I'm short of.

D'awww I feel so special :D *Adds evil_elf to buddy list for being awesome*
evil_elf, occasionally I take a break to play - and just in case I won't be able to judge, I am preparing a list right now.
But given that I get both free lunch AND free packs for judging in a tournament, I'd need a good reason to play instead.

Prereleases I always judge in now, because it doesn't cost me $25 to get all those goodies =D
evil_elf, I get paid 9 packs for each tournament I judge, or 18 if I'm head judge (which is about once a year due to scheduling).

Why WOULDN'T I want to judge?
evil_elf, the only one near me (I think) is on the 2nd weekend of September, and unless plans change I'm fairly positive I'm going to be judging at that one.
