It shouldn't, really; there are many reasons the show exploded as it did.
It is a good thing, because that means that it's a character more developed and complex than usual. It also shows a lot about perception of gender roles.
As strange as it might seem, not all men like MLP. There is apparently a specific set of behavioral/personality characteristics that make men like the show. It isn't the same for girls... as I understand it at least.
And yes, rainbow is a girl too. The fact that you can't distinguish it even after seeing an episode speaks highly of the show.
