(1) 6th Generation Coming Soon? [11/26]

What I'm interested in in regards to the next generation is how the games will take advantage of new features available to the 3DS. You've got Streetpass and Spotpass which offer new methods of exchange and distribution of data. You've got DLC support which can enhance the game in new ways. What will some of these new features bring to the table?

I've got some ideas on how they could use these features:
-Streetpass could be used for something like the Trainer House in GSCHGSS, you can battle trainers that you meet via Streetpass using a preset team or something.
-Spotpass will probably be used for events and daily item distribution and stuff like that.
-There's probably going to be some Pokewalker type gimmick.
-Proper DLC could enhance the idea of event areas. They could distribute "level packs" of sorts that would add content to the game, say they could give you a sort of mini region approximately the size of Sinnoh's Battle Zone, and it would have new areas, Pokemon that are otherwise unavailable in the game, and even a mini storyline. Enough of having those tiny little islands with nothing of interest there besides some event Pokemon that becomes pointless when you catch them, at the very least make it into a full dungeon that can be explored and have more to do than a one time capture. Furthermore, this would also mean we no longer have need for extra games like your typical third version solely to improve availability, they can take whatever improvements they decide to make in such games and add them to the game we already have.

I'd like to see what else they could do with it, though.

If you look back on old games, there could be signs of features for future generations. I believe that the Pokemon makers have the far future planned out, because if you look at Emerald Version, inside the Devon Incorporation Building, when you talk to the Professors, they say many things. One of them say, "I am figuring out how to read Pokemon dreams" (not exact quote, I can't remember exactly what he says), referring to Pokemon Black and White Dream World, which was around a decade until release. Mabye looking at Pokemon Diamond or Pearl there could be signs of features of the next Generation.

Actually, they do that exactly, though the hints never become clear until after the fact. It just isn't worthwhile looking for clues since there's no way to know for sure until an official announcement is made.

Well, the veilstone swordsman myth might have something to do with 6th generation...really dunno.

Swordsman Myth?
Sounds like it could have something to do with the muskeeter trio.

I hope that the new game looks good on the 3DS, but also for DSi and other DS's because if you play Black 2 or White 2 on the 3DS, it looks stretched, pixelated, and blurry.

My 3DS has never done that. Instead it blacks out the sides of the top screen to format it like the DS looks.

3DS games are not playable on DS, and obviously there wont be another DS game coming anyway, so it'll look as it should.

I have an XL so the screen is extra large which means that it is stretched to fit the huge screen. Because of this every pixel becomes bigger and it therefore looks a bit blurry

yeah i forgot about that, you're right

It's true for more or less every DS/DSi game on a 3DS. It's just more noticeable in some games than others. For instance, it is VERY apparant in most DSiware. ;p Some people just get used to it. (I still notice the stretching on Black/White/BW2, but it no longer bothers me much.)

As for Mitja's comment, I wouldn't rule out another DS game personally. They seem to like having Pokemon as accessible as possible. (Though they seem content with spin-off games being on whatever the most recent platform is, perhaps as a method of gauging how well-received this will be?) Though I suppose it's possible that BW2 just had a development period that preceded the 3DS being popular enough. Still, I wouldn't expect that if we got another main-series Generation 5 game that it would be 3DS-exclusive. Excluding spin-offs (Red/Blue Rescue Team, I'm looking at you), they don't split generations between multiple consoles. (Well, with the exception of home consoles, but they still stick to 1 home console. For instance, all the Gen 3 home console games were for the Gamecube.) Note that I consider Gold and Silver backwards-compatible GBC games, and not Colour-enhanced GB games. (And conversely, consider Yellow a Colour-enhanced GB game.)

Well, that was a little more rambly than I expected, but eh, it was necessary. I think I'll end this with my wondering if 3DS-enhanced DS games are possible. (In the same way that Pokemon Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 are DSi-enhanced, being able to use DSi features but retaining compatability with the original DS/Lite.) Though I expect they're not, or they'd have likely done a couple of things in 3D at least in BW2. (Like the legendary encounter screens, or the Kyurem vs Reshiram/Zekrom cutscene.)

No, my regular 3DS doesn't do that at all. I'm currently playing Pokemon Black 2 and the imagery is exactly what it would look like on my DS Lite. I wouldn't be saying this if it weren't true.

Actually, the 3DS makes the game blurry and not "pixel perfect" which really bugs me. I got accustomed to it butn I'd never get a 3DS XL bcause of how bad a DS game would be.

There is no games coming out for the DS next year, let alone in like 8 months? Right.

But besides, its the first time we have even had pokemon games come out for an outdated system with BW2, and even that had very specific reasons by being direct sequels.

By the time the next set of Pokemon games come out (lets say September 2013 in Japan), the 3DS will be 3 years old, meaning gamefreak would have had the devkit in their hands 4 years for crying out loud.
Not to mention if those turn out to be gen VI games, they'll still be the gen that took the longest to appear after their handheld is released.

Not to mention, Nintendo would probably be happy about one of their biggest franchises actually helping them sell their current 2 year old handheld, instead of milking the dead one like theyre some crappy shovelware game company, no?

Several solid points, each on its own saying:
There is just no freakin way, if we try to be even the tinniest bit realistic.

Well, you never know. After all, although the 3DS is now 2 years out, it's also the first handheld to have update packages. So who knows? Maybe Nintendo is planning to keep the 3DS for a long time. Besides, if they wanted to end the Pokemon series, they would probably announce it. It would work the same way it works with old music bands. Everyone would rush to buy the "last Pokemon game ever" whether it was good or bad. So why not release Gen VI?
Of course, they might as well not make a Pokemon game of the main series for the 3DS, and instead release a Gen VI along with a new handheld.

That's because the screens are very similar. You see, i went from a regular DSi, to a 3DS XL. It's a pretty big change so it could be my eye. I only got my 3DS a week ago, but i am starting to get used to it.

Red Rescue Team came out a year after the DS. But I see your point, and can see you're an intelligent person. I think we should agree to disagree on this one.

Actually, believe it or not, the regular DS games look much better on a 3DS XL than a regular 3DS. Don't ask how or why, they just are.
While the quality is obviously not as great as the DS/DS Lite etc. it is much better than the 3DS'.

1. you could just hold down Start and Select when starting a ds game to improve the image quality on a 3ds (although the image size will shrink down considerably)

2. on a more on topic note I saw this news artical on a site I go to, and here's what it said:

"Japanese magazine Nintendo Dream has posted a greetings card sent out by GameFreak. This greetings card doesn't reveal much news but does state that Junichi Masuda has said that during 2013, they intend to further 'evolve the world of Pokémon.' It's currently unclear as to what exactly this means for Pokémon games but we'll bring the announcements as they come."

I am (or rather was) in not way a believer that the 6th gen is coming soon, but this has sparked my interest and I think that it could be possible... either way, something big is coming soon, 6th gen or not...
