There's a reason why they have a big battlefield. The trainers aren't supposed to be right in the middle of the action like that. They could've been hurt! Just imagine what could've happened if Stoutland failed to deflect that attack from Serperior in the beginning...
It could've worked for a battle against villains, but it's not like you're supposed to hurt the Trainer you're fighting in a friendly Gym battle.
People are praising it for "realism", but it's a scenario that could never realistically happen.

and (realistically) a Gym that had such battles would probably get shut down.
