The inversion probably makes it worse, but you can vaguely see that the shade that's circled is slightly brighter (er, darker in the non-inverted version) than the one to the left of it. This makes it seem like the silhouettes some of the in-game Pokedex's use. If you take a silhouette of a Pokemon from a Gen IV or so game, and tilt the DS vertically, you can see some details, and that it's not all black. I don't think they're seeing things. But pixels have deceived before, I suppose.
