(1) Nintendo to Announce a New Game Tomorrow - Pokemon? [2/21]

Didn't Nintendo report that the 3DS was their best/fastest selling system since the Gameboy?

Ayup. Its doing better than the DS did when it was first released. The sales have been MORE than enthusiastic.

I don't know what to think. Right now, Nintendo doesn't have to worry too much about sales for the system, since Monster Hunter Tri-G is still doing well in Japan, with new people hopping on board everyday.

Now that I think about it, considering its an international announcement, it just might be Monster Hunter Tri-G for the rest of the world.

BTW, http://www.vgchartz.com. It's not the most accurate thing in the world, but it's probably correct to within a couple percentage points...

Minor bone to pick with you. The 3DS, relative to life cycle, has outsold the DS. 16.1 million in 9 months is nothing to sneeze at. It hasn't sold less than 200,000 units a week worldwide since mid-October. It's outsold every other gaming console every week since early December.

If that's less than enthusiastic, then the rest of the gaming industry must be in complete freefall.

Yeah, I was actually going to bring that up myself. Sales were really only lacking before the price drop and holiday season. Lately they've been fantastic.

This Nintendo Direct coincides with the North American Vita launch. No doubt this new game announcement is being made when it is as an attempt to further take away its steam.

Sorry, fixed that bit. I think I was outdated on that information and should have double-checked before saying that.

Hey, its all good. You admitted you made a mistake and took action to fix it, unlike some other admins. Hat's tipped to you.

Regardless of what is announced, it can only be a good thing.

Pokemon Grey will likely be for 3DS and DS, like Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition. New DS systems are released abiut every year lately, and since it's been an entire year since the 3DS first released, it could be a 3DS sequel, or something like it. Probably, just a bigger 3DS with new features (better 3D?).
Maybe something a new Super Smash Bros. game? I'm not too confident this is about Pokemon.

I was surprised they didn't release a new system with the release of Black and White to be honest.

It would be more surprising if Grey gets released for a new system than it was surprising that BW did not.

Crystal on GBC is not comparable to this situation.

... What? How does it not? It would be the exact same situation as with G/S/C and it would be with B/W/G(?).

If it is Gray (or whatever the new Pokemon game will be) I hope it comes out for the 3DS at least, maybe just the regular DS because I have been dying for a Pokemon game for my 3DS. I'd love to feel like the fire from Flamethrower is going to burn me.:p

I like how everyone has written this being a pokemon game off already, but what ever it is, I'm looking forward to it. (Y'all do know it could possibly be a worldwide release, but I'll admit, it's highly unlikely.)

If Gray is not on the 3DS, than the R/S remakes will most likely be.

Ya'll sure its a pokemon game and not a new Mario or Donkey Kong game? :p Highly doubt its a new pokemon game, didnt they just make a Pokémon spinoff game? Waaay too soon for a "pokemon grey" IMO. If they did release a pokemon grey, wow they'd really be rushing it big time. Maybe its a spinoff game again? Or possibly a R/S remake? I would love a remake of those!!! ^-^

Think Japan. Rumble Blast and Pokepark 2 have been out for a good while. Think the NA releases of Mystery Dungeon 1, Ranger 1, and DP:
  • Mystery Dungeon 1 - September 2006
  • Ranger 1 - October 2006
  • DP - April 2007
That's not a huge gap.

>>>>>‘Black’ and ‘White’ Sequel To Be Announced on ‘Pokemon Smash’ This Week? Monday, February 20th, 2012 @ 1 AM PST - I really thing when they said " sequel to pokemon Black and White" they were talking about a sequel to the movie, Black and White-the one last year with Victini, not a sequel to the Black and White games.

Eh. I'm not sure if Masuda would make a tease if it weren't a Game Freak game.

hmmm just a hypothisis here, if they did make an alternate form of Kyurem, wouldnt it be too similar to giratina like copying it?

Actually, the Kyurem forme might directly be an Origin Forme. Some speculate it may be Kyurem's complete forme, with Reshiram and Zekrom traits. I doubt it would be too similar.

I think if they did that, they wouldnt make it to put it in a "pokemon grey" but as a downloadable event thing for the movie.

Not possible, as evidenced by the ROM story a few weeks back. The data simply isn't there, and if 3DS games are debatable on their patchability, DS games are nigh impossible.

I believe that Pokemon Gray will also be available for the DS.

Yeah, probably. 3DS compatibility would be a beast to do.

Not many people have a 3DS and if it does come out specifically for the 3DS it won't get as many sales.

I guess you mean relative to the DS userbase. It would be a risk, but just look at Monster Hunter 3G.

According to the SwapNote sent out by NoA, the same announcement should be released tomorrow at 6 AM PT/9AM AT.
Which means there probably isn't any news for Pokemon D:

I was about to agree, as a Pokemon announcement would be a for a Japanese game. But it's possible it could happen. At NA's last Nintendo Direct, we got news of Hulu Plus. That didn't make the Japanese one.

Indeed. Here's a chart comparing sales in its first 52 weeks of sales compared to DS, Wii, and GBA:

@Metalizard and Ice Arceus: I do agree with you about hoping the third game to Black and White isn't 3DS exclusive but their is precendence for it. When Gold and Silver came out it was for the Gameboy and could be played on Gameboy Color as well. But when they released Crystal it was only for the Gameboy Color, which made me have to get a Gameboy Color to play Crystal.

The Game Boy Color is a much smaller step in power from the Game Boy, than the 3DS to the DS. They were the same basic system, so compatibility wasn't an issue.

I was surprised they didn't release a new system with the release of Black and White to be honest.

The timing wasn't right. Pokemon games always usually come out a few years after a system has been out. RB, GS, RS, DP. They've all done it. BW happened to fall late in the DS lifespan. Do note that they came out 5 months before the 3DS. They would have been delayed by at least a year to be put on 3DS.

I'm pretty sure gamefreak only working with the main game series, and there are other companys that are making the spinoffs. I don't think its a pokémon game that will be announced either thought, but I would be very happy if it was :p

There wouldn't have been a Pokemon announcement with the US Direct. But Last Story was surprising, as was Dillon's Rolling Western being out today. And Dillon's Rolling Western being priced at $10.

I really liked the structure of this one. It was like Nintendo Week Special Edition.

If it is Pokemon Gray, but also available for DSi XL, I will definately get it.

There's no reason why it shouldn't be. Pokemon games don't migrate to new systems until that system is one generation behind. This is to keep children as an available marketing group. Most parents would rather spend $70 on a used DS Lite than $250 on a 3DS for their 8 year old daughter. To lock out anyone without a 3DS would be an extremely poor marketing decision that would likely cost them a significant portion of potential profits, while also losing the trust of parents for trying to "force" them to buy the expensive, new system.

Here's the problem, though:

Nintendo is attempting to phase out the DS system all together. They want to focus on getting the 3DS into more hands, and considering the INCREDIBLE momentum the 3DS has had this past year, there is absolutely NO reason why aside from, as some call it, alienating some fans. Even then, Nintendo is a business and selling more product is the name of the game.

Reggie, not ONCE, acknowledged the Nintendo DS system in the Nintendo Direct video, an the newest crossover game will probably be the last decent-to- amazing game the DS will have.

Also, no. Nintendo would not rather have ANYONE spend money on buying a used game or system. You do understand that the companies that sell used video game hardware and software keep the profit, right? Game$top doesn't cut Nintendo a check for every used DS system sold; they pocket that money. That's a loss of funding for Nintendo.

I also think "gray" will be for DS. I once read a interview with one of the people behind pokémon, and he said "I always wanted to make another generation for DS" :/

I wonder what they will make to improve the grapics thought. Emerald introduced animations when the opponents pokémon were sent out. I think Platinum made animations for the back sprites? So what will Gray add? Attack animations would be very nice! And will we get new sprites? Right now the they made the sprite so the back and front sprite fit eachother, so I could see that being a "problem" if they decided to make new sprites.. :/
