(2) All Names Possibly Revealed, More 'Black' and 'White' English Names Revealed [1/13]

These are much better than some of the Japanese names (if you knew how bad some of them actually are... *shivers), and I like these a lot. :)

Also, you are allowed to not like the names, and we are allowed to say that we think you're just being stupid. Goes both ways.

Yeah, I saw that too, but they use ELECTRIC a lot. There's many other words for it, but still, it's OK if 2 pokemon have similar names.

My friend made a joke the other day. Im going to go do my laundry, so im going to "throh" my "sawk"s in the "eelektrik" washing machine.

This is the main problem with my words. Ive gotten used to the first generation names, because they have been around so long. But these are so funny, it seems not fit for a name. well Muk resembled a glob,s o it made sense. Seel was a seal, and drowzee was a hypnotist. I get the pun in eelektrik, eel electric, but throh and sawk are just bad names. sock referes to punching someone. But all i can see is a sock.

Throh makes more sense but they could have better names.

But this is just my view on things, could have made names more like charmander, where there was a better correlation betweeen the two root words.

Ah yes pokepuns we had a lot of those.

Yeah but is that a name that you're fine with simply because you're used to Gen I names, rather than due to them actually sounding better? Because no matter how suitable it may or may not be, a name like "Seel" has the same quality as "Throh" IMO... they're both based around singular root words (as opposed to most of the names based around dual root words)

I actually really like these names -- some aren't as good until you really examine them.

@Xous -- I think that Conkeldurr gets its name from concrete + -urr (suffix of previous evolutions) -- "eldurr" also maybe because it is the "elder" of its evolutionary family. I didn't think of "-durr" coming from builder, but you could be on to something there, too!

@Ekaru. No, you're not. Because that way, you're just being as stupid as "us"...

@XieRH:
Just bear in mind exactly what it is you are raising such a huge fuss about: The names of fictional monsters in a children's videogame.

So, that's not important... ok... and you say you're a pokémon fan... Names are an important thing in eveything... Doesn't matter if it's the name of a fictional creature or the name of a person. That's my opinion and so I think it's worth complaining.

*by "complaining" I mean things like calling PUSA "morons" and their names and expression of "dumbness"... and you wonder why people accuse you of being a hater rather than a "constructive critic".

You can look at it this way: Say I went to fake creations forum, and I feel like this certain guy "could do better" with his fake card's designs, so I "complain" because I want him to do better, and I do this by calling his works "dumb" and "moronic". And when other people criticise me for my tone, I reply that they deserve a "punch in the face" for trying to infringe against my right to complain. How's that?

Yeah, I admit that post was excessive. But I was angry. And what it seems that you didn't understand is that I wasn't even speaking for me. Cuz nobody really replied that serious to my 1st post so I had no reason to really talk about me. But I saw a lot of people who didn't like the names too and users like nikohesus and SuperMatt142 just wanted to stop them from complaining just because they like the names and they think they're smarter than everyone else for liking them. I was defending those users. Yeah, probably in a wrong way but that's the way I am. And I wasn't forcing people to accept my opinion, I just wanted that the people who like the names stopped attacking those who don't. That was it.
And about your example. For me, that's different situations. I'd never call someone dumb just because their fan creation's name was bad. I'd just say "I don't like it". But in the case of these official names, it's different. Those people were paid to work on the names and despite I admit that some of them sound better to me now, they came with some really horrible names. Maybe insulting is wrong, but in this specific case, I don't regret it. Too bad for people who don't like me.

I'm sorry, but I'm getting really tired of your rudeness, especially in this thread. Yes, it is sort of an annoyance that the names are quite awful, but I don't understand why a few members are going all rage-caps on it. It's honestly not that big of a deal. I don't understand why some members are making it this way. XieRH is 100% correct. I mean, you're actually getting angry about this?

It looks like some of these names were just randomly put together, and they just rushed right through them. :( But only some of them are good.

@SinnohTrainer17: No, I was angry about those who didn't want to let the people who don't like the names to complain about it.
And if you don't like my rudeness, too bad for you. I couldn't care less about that...

I gotta wonder - does nobody at NOA follow professional sports?

It took me a couple times looking at it to notice, but Durant just happens to share a name with the NBA's leading scorer last season, Kevin Durant.

kevin-durant-mip.jpg

I could buy it as a sort of inside joke if it learned Thunder or Supersonic, which happen to be the names of the teams Durant has played for, but as is it's just an unfortunate coincidence.

Past that, a lot of these names were terrible at first, but when I read through a couple of times I really started to like some of them...unlike in Gen IV, which I've grown used to but still don't like. Really good names to be include:

Patrat (reminds me of "packrat", which, even if it's not what the pokemon is based on entirely, still works great in a name)
Stoutland (captures the aura of dependability and prestige that a large dog should have; I could see it being the name of a breed at the Westminster Dog Show or somesuch)
Unfezant (first time looking at it I said 'what the hell?', but second time I saw where it came from and loved how they worked it)
Sigilyph (combination of two words that fit the pokemon perfectly and sound great put together - what more need be said?)
Carracosta (it just sounds boss, and the pokemon looks like a boss. perfect fit.)
Foongus and Amoonguss (heey, a pop culture reference!)
Galvantula (just a solid name for a great pokemon; sounds badass while also using an electricity-related word. they hit the bullseye with this one.)
Klink, Klang, Klinklang (another intitial 'wtf', but when I actually said it and broke out laughing I realized it actually works great. and it's better than gear, gigear, gigigear.)
Ferrothorn (actually kept simple here, managed to combined steel and grass and elements of the pokemon itself simply, but while still using slightly exotic words for it.)
Chandelure (great pun, and it captures the essence of the pokemon precisely.)
Fraxure (this is something much like I'd do; take a pun on the word, while also fitting an element of the pokemon in the word. would rather have this as the final evo name than Haxorus, but great nonetheless.)
Mienshao (soiunds exotic, but dangerous - exactly how the pokemon looks. another bullseye.)
Bisharp (my mind was stuck in the gutter for a while here, but when I got that it was from 'bishop' - and saw the pokemon looked like a bishop - I realized they actually did a good job here.)
Druddigon (sounds Scottish or Welsh, which fits perfectly with its image, like that of a dragon on a coat of arms. sounds gritty, just like the pokemon looks grittier than other dragon pokemon.)
Hydreigon (thought it was kind of simple at first - just hydra and dragon - but then when I realized German for 3 got sneaked in there it added just enough to it for it to be great.)
Larvesta and Volcarona (missed the Roman mythology nod in 'vesta' at first, but even before I saw it these names were spot-on.)

There are a lot of other solid ones, but I do have a few things to say about certain ones I had Isshus issues with:

Servine - I actually did like this one, but it reminds me too much of 'serval'. I love servals, I want to see a serval pokemon, and when I first saw this it gave me a false feeling of excitement, that's all.

Purrloin - I get where they were going with this, but I keep thinking of loin as separate; either a hunk of meat, or when Dan Stark always says "I've got a tingling in my loins!" Neither one gels with Choroneko very well.

Simipour - Singapore? Eh, here I just wish they'd been able to find a word to denote water while still gelling like the other two did. Maybe soak, for Pansoak and Simisoak? Looks weird, but at least it flows when you say it...

Roggenrola - would have liked this a lot if it hadn't been wasted on a tiny basic stage (ditto for Tynamo, by the way).

Conkeldurr - again, I get where they were going with it, but between its clownish face and the end of its name, the "hurr-durr" jokes will be far too numerous for such an awesome pokemon.

Throh and Sawk - When I'm naming pokemon, I love punny names, but these just reek of laziness and generally don't work.

Krookodile - not too bad in truth, but I wish they'd at least referenced that it's actually a gavial, not a crocodile (I forget what I called the middle stage, but I named Sandile Gavese and this one Gavicious. eh). But then, I suppose none of the little kids know what a gavial is, so whatever.

Cofagrigus - all else aside, this is going to be hell to type, even worse to pronounce. Sarcostus (sarcophagus + ghost + sarcophagus again) might have sufficed here, though it is a little too similar to Carracosta. Meh.

Beheeyem - I like how they did LGM, but this one still makes me go 'wtf', even though I get it's spelling letters out as well. just feels like it trashed the name of one of my favorite Unovamon is all.

Golurk - why on earth would a giant flying robot ghost golem lurk? This is quite literally my favorite canonmon, but the name makes it sound wimpy, and generally fails to live up to the badassery of its design.

Bouffalant - not bad, per se, it just makes me think elephant when there's no elephant elements in it. Buffro wouldn't have been too much trouble?

Vullaby and Mandibuzz - again, I get what they're doing here, but the first reminds me of a wallaby and the second reminds me of a praying mantis, not a vulture and a buzzard.

So a few of them I'm just not going to like, period, but the rest have already grown on me, and a few are just great. NOA named them much in the style I do; using more obscure words than the obvious, fitting them together cleverly to make different pronunciations, and using lots of puns. They fell a little short or overshot in some cases, but that's okay. So do I.

But I saw a lot of people who didn't like the names too and users like nikohesus and SuperMatt142 just wanted to stop them from complaining just because they like the names and they think they're smarter than everyone else for liking them.

What? If you're going to be derogatory against other members provide more evidence. I don't want people to stop complaining- I want people to justify their complaints. An opinion is an opinion but it is a non-constructive opinion if it doesn't have a reason. I really don't like all the names- Throh and Sawk and Emolga are the ones I particularly dislike. I dislike Throh and Sawk because I believe they could have been implemented better and simply because they sound awkward. I haven't argued against anybody about that. And Emolga loses all it's meaning, is spelled and sound awkward. And since when did I claim superiority over every one? I'm only a twelve year old kid, I don't care if I sound smarter than everyone. It just gets annoying when there are pages full of whiny complaints instead of valuable discussion that discusses both sides of the opinion.

Here is a prime example of what I don' want to see.
LLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEE!! >_<

It's one post, but it really doesn't provide anything to the discussion of the names.

@nikohesus: ...You're kidding. You're only 12? I give you props for being able to respond to people in such a mature way. :)

And @AliasBot: That would've been very interesting if Durant could learn those moves. Sucks that it's just a coincidence. =/

WAAH! *hides* Guys, come on,nobody is saying to everyone:"Stop hating the names!"

Besides,Metalizard, saying that you dont care about if people hate your rudeness is,plainly, more rude.I mean, what the fudge happened to everyone?First,we where chatting happily and peacefully. And now we all disagree, complain about freakingly stupid nonsense and complain...Sigh,Spanish forums are more calm.

nikohesus,I see what you did there:"Lets look at the 2 sides!",or whatever. That's almost the same thing im saying:"Lets look at the good sides of the names, too. Not only the bad sides"

By God,guys. Some of you need some chilling out and think before acting. :\

EDIT:Sorry if this is offensive, but the "easily angered" message you have is true,Metalizard.Dont even bother saying bad stuff about me,im just a little 12 year old kiddie.

wow, some of the people on here sound like old nerdy geezers that don't have a life! anyway, yeah i have to agree with gleafeon. this is getting really annoying, all of the hate going around, and also gleafeon is right, foros españoles son más tranquilo que este. (i meant that some of you are really young and i expected you all to be like 16-20 years old, no offense)

they could'nt do wargle, it kinda suggests america is always at war. plus, it sounds like a noise someone makes when being strangled:

Mother: i am going to wring your neck!
Kid: WARGLE!!

some of these coments are secreting gallons of hate juice.
(LOL) and i am sorry for directing it all at you, metalizard.

Mods, my posts sometines dont show up on the thread, is that bad?
(sorry im kinda new here.)

I accept that as a reason, just not as a valid and justifiable one. You may feel otherwise, it's your own call. End of the day you're the one who decides whether or not to hit the Post Reply button on all your posts, and the mods are the ones who decide whether or not to hit the "warn/ban/deploy hit team" button

It's not different. If you like something, you like it. If you hate something, you hate it. If a fan came up with a "stupid-sounding" name, would it sound any less stupid to you just because the name came from a fan rather than from an official source? In fact I can bet that if PUSA outsourced the naming job to a forum member here, the only difference in your case would be that instead of insulting PUSA for the names you hate, you'd target the forum member instead.

There is no reason to use the idea of "people getting paid" as an excuse. It is like saying that quality can only come if there is money involved, or that people are judged on different (read: unequal) standards based on whether they do things for money or for free. The people at PUSA are paid salaries, not commissions, they will not be paid less for a name that doesn't meet the satisfaction of some guy out there, nor will they be paid more for a really well-conceived name. The money is tied to the hours they spend working, not to the thing they are working on.

For a person who "doesn't care" you certainly take a lot of effort to reply to those who spoke about their disapproval towards your attitude...

I mean... if you truly didn't care, you would've ignored all the retaliatory comments aimed at you.
But then you were all like "Oh! Don't you dare call me a hater~! /pouts"

Hey that's brilliant! Maybe Tiger Woods can be a gym leader's name in the US version of BW!

Braviary is stupid...

Well... when the guys raging about the "friend" in Cofagrigus are tired of beating that dead horse, they'll move on to the "bra" in braviary

As much as I get a headache from looking at these names, I can still imagine looking at them in the games, on the cards, in the anime and all other licensed products. My personal favorite is Roggenrola( I think it's better than Geodude IMO)

Umm.. I NEVER said for people to stop complaining. Not even once. I made counterpoints to peoples arguments BECAUSE they were bad arguments. When you say that a suffix (-perior) being in two different pokémon names is being be uncreative compared to earlier gens... but then that using -king, -dos, and -don being used more than that isn't uncreative... that's a BAD argument. All I did was counter a bad argument with a better one. I'm smarter because I can frame a good argument, not because I like or dislike either side. I don't like every one of every name in every gen. For example, Mightyena isn't a hyena. It's a wolf. That's straight up wrong. Hyenas aren't even related to dogs. They are felines. That is a good argument against a name. If I said I didn't like Mightyena's name because it's dumb... then people would DESTROY me on this board. I saw a dislike argument that said that too many names had two syllables, and they prefer simpler names bulbasaur. Bulbasaur has THREE syllables. Their argument was not only invalid, they disproved themselves.

So, in conclusion, I don't have to make it seem like I'm smarter by making a good argument. I AM smarter because I can make a good argument. By the way, your argument was I was trying to stop complainers. Wrong. I was actually facilitating argument by pointing out the other side with good solid facts, an action which caused YOU to continue to complain. Boom. Not stopping anyone.

Addtionally, my first post simply stated that I don't even care and that I'm mainly on the fence until there is an official announcment.. observe.
My original post:
I'm just going to wait for an official announcement and the fervor of hate to wear down. I really don't care what GF names most of these guys because I never made myself learn the japanese names... I don't have any attachment to some other name.

Also... the news post says it's a list of English and ITALIAN names. Are we sure that some of those names aren't for the European versions of the game? Bronzong is Archeodong in France. ArcheoDONG. I actually searched one out on the GTS so I could make jokes about it. My friend in Germany traded me Bidoof with thier German name of Bidiza.

Anyway.. it's not that big of deal. A couple months ago everyone was mad because they didn't like how the new guys looked. Now the appearance hate has died down.. the names are what's hated now. Har.

Now, Metalizard, even you stated that some are not as bad as you though initially. So... you prove my point. Nerd rage eventually is worn down as soon as people finally accept that just getting mad won't change an already programmed game. Har Har.
