a few questions about the cards

Good evening everyone

Altough i was never a big fan of playing Pokemon i used to collect them when they first got out. At the time i managed to complete the first 5 sets of cards. (Base set, base set 2, team rocket, jungle and another one i can´t remember now).

Then i stoped buying and eventually i forgot about the cards and the game. But a week ago my younger brother found the box where the cards were and he got quite excited with them, forcing me to teach him how to play and to actually play.

Anyway let´s say that these nostalgic moments of my earlier childhood and my brother´s excitment made me consider collecting these cards again. So i browsed around wikipedia and i have a few questions that hopefully some of you will have the patience to answer.

1) I read that nintendo bought the game a few years ago from wizards of the coast. Did the rules/style of play changed with this? Or it´s basically the same thing?

2) As i´m mainly a coolector and seeing i´m out of this for almost 8 years is there anyway i can check the cards value so i don´t get fooled when trading?

3) As most of my cards are from the first 5 sets (and in portuguese most of them) i wonder if there´s many people collecting these nowadays or if i can forget about trading these.

4) Where can i find complete checklists?

5) Do pokemon cards also have foil paralel sets like magic sets? When i collected they didn´t, so if they do, in which set started?

I´m sure more questions will pop up in the next few days. Now i´ll have some fun organizing the collection again.

Thanks in advance

1) Rules stayed the same

2) I usually go on E-bay and go by the cheapes buy-it-now price

3) Ya, if you go to the trading thread you can see that quite a few people still collect them

4) On the Pokebeach how page, on the left-hand side go to "classic sets" I think it's called that, but they have the complete list for all of the older sets, they also have all the EX and D&P series sets

5) Yup, they just started in the Diamon & Pearl series sets

Actually, they started using reverse holos in the Expedition set, but it wasn't until the EX sets that you could get the entire set. (Excluding ex's.)

Thanks for your answer mate ;)

I remember that there was a portuguese magazine that used to have price lists like inquest does (or used to do) for magic.

Anyway who are the "big boys" of pokemon then? I remember Charizard and Blastoise were the hardest cards to get when i collected.

Thanks for the correction ;)

Do you know where i can find the info about what cards have reverse holos in those previous sets?

Now, Gallade is dominating the TCG meta-game, because the deck G&G.

^That's not entirely true. Gallade works in any deck it is thrown in, it just happens to be the main Poke of G&G. Gallantry (+Shiftry DP) also works very nicely. (and has a better sounding name) >_>

actually your wrong too , they started reverse holos in the legendary collection!

Well one thing you should know totti, is that never trust a magazine price list. The price differs time to time so if you want to know the price, check by the metagame.

Thanks for replies

A couple more questions:

1) Is there a site where i can check in which languages every set was released?

2) My base set cards in english have "1st edition" printed in the left side of the card, right next to the picture, but my portuguese don´t have this. Why is that?

3) I went to beckett.com for checklists and they have 2 lists for the earlier sets: 1st edition and unlimited edition. What´s the difference?

Thanks again

1) dont know , havent seen other laguages besides english and japanese in a while .

2-3)first edition usually are "first batches printed" or batches printed during the "first day"/ " first days of printing". after a certain amount of batches are printed or days have passed , they can no longer be considered first edition so they take of the signal that says so. to collectors 1st edition are a must bacause they are usually made in fewer quantities while at the same time your getting some of the 1st cards ever printed in that set.

1) Yes, there have been serveral rule changes. 1) Muligans now only count for 1 additional card instead of 2. 2) You can only retreat once per turn. 3) Confusion doesn't require a flip anymore to retreat and places 3 damage counters now instead of doing 20 to yourself (bypassing weakness/resistant/metal, ect.). 4) You draw a card if you go first (this was changed for a while). 5) You can't play any trainers if you go first (trainers are now seperated and are trainers, staduims, and supporters (the last 2 you can only play once per turn)). There have been serveral rule changes that you'll have to look up in the compendium.
2) Ebay and asking other collectors are both good resources.
3) All of them have been out of print for some time, making them hard to collect.
4) This site and the pokegym. I believe pojo and the offical site have some checklists also.
5) They do now; Originated in Legendary Collection.

On the other set of questions:
1) I think googleing will help here, but I'm pretty sure theres been sets in the majority of common languages.
2) The first edition simply means that its of the orginal print. They are worth more then normal. I'm not sure if other languages have this or not. Also be sure to check your base cards for shadowless cards (as these are worth alot of money (espically zard)).
3) Again, the different printings. As a side note, machamp was only made as first edition so that is one of the reasons for the different lists.

Thanks for all the answers, the information has been pretty helpfull.

I got a new one. Today my brother bought 3 ex emerald packs.

In the first there was a Deoxys holo, in the second a common foil and in the third a Swampert foil, but the name of the card is also in foil.

So are there 3 different kinds of foil cards?

The deoxys is a normal foil. The other two are both parrell foils. The swampert has his name foiled up because he is normally a holo.

A heads up: If you plan to play in official events, such as tournaments, you should be aware that this is one of those card games where sets are "rotated out." That is, once in a while, a few of the oldest sets are no longer tournament-legal. After some time, the next few sets stop being tournament-legal, and so forth. The Pokémon TCG does this once per year, around September. At this point, the only sets you can use from tournaments, with the exception of cards reprinted within these sets (such as Switch and Potion), are Holon Phantoms, Crystal Guardians, Dragon Frontiers, Power Keepers, the four Diamond/Pearl sets, POP Series 4 and above, and certain Promos.

For a collector, this means that if you want to trade with someone who mainly plays, you have to make sure you're offering a card from one of these sets, or else the player will have no use for it.
