A Guilty Pleasure?

I used to play and collect Pokemon trading cards when I was age 13-15. I played in the Pokemon Trading Card Game league at Toys R US. Eventually, after a good stay, Toys R US got rid of the league, and I stopped playing and collecting for the most part since then. I'm now 17 years old, and after taking 2 years off Pokemon, and almost certain I was done with it, I stashed my stacks and stacks of cards under my bed. Not until just recently I got bored and decided to look through my old cards. I even decided to make a deck. I wouldn't mind getting back into collecting and playing again. But there's a voice in my head that keeps telling me that I'm 17 years old, and I should not be playin with such a childish game. Spending money on cards would be a waste. It's still something I like doing however.

I was more of a collector than a good deck maker and player back in the day. I often put stylish, rare, expensive cards in my deck just to show them off. Even if their attacks and etc were pretty bad. I still managed to get all of my badges though. Now that I'm older I think I could do a much better job with creating strategies, and knowing how to build a more competitive deck.

Question: How old are you, and how do you feel about your interest in Pokemon Cards?

Well, I'm 16 and I play Pokémon regularly, and I'm fine with that. If you enjoy playing the game like I and many others do, you shouldn't care if you're 16, 17,18 etc. You could almost say the exact same thing about Sonic, Mario and all of the other vdeo game icons, kids play the games, and so do we. There's no shame in that.

It's rated "Everyone" for a reason. ;)

Hey deep blue i am 17 too i feel that it is ok to like the game because if you really look at it most of the players are 15+ and all my pokemon friends are in college so i do not look at it being childish it is fun and is a great way to meet people.

I'm 20. I don't have many people to play against, but I still buy cards whenever I can. I love the game, I'm not embarrassed to tell people I play.

You will find that a large number of people on this site are at least 15 years of age. Pokémon is for big kids too :D

Just because you're 17 doesn't mean that you're not allowed to play. I'm 18 and I've played/collected since the beginning and still do. I play because I have friends who play also (many which are my age and older), plus it's a fun game.

If you think that it's too childish then maybe you shouldn't play it but don't let the image of the cards put you off. Just because they're Pokemon doesn't mean that they're only for kids ;)

Even if I were to start collecting/playing again I wouldn't know what cards to buy, or what cards to put into my decks. I don't know any new rules. I also don't know any places to play, or anyone to play for that matter (besides my little sister). I stopped collecting at around the Neo 2 series (I think that's Neo Discovery or something).

But yeah, most of the people at the trading card game league were at least twice my age. That made me very comfortable. Then you'd have your occasional youngster. It was fun, the same people (about 15-20) would show up every week on Saturday. We'd sometime have one timers to drop by. It was something I enjoyed.

The best thing to do would be to attend one of the Dragon Frontiers pre-release (http://www.op.pokemon-tcg.com/content/events/faqs/2006-2007/ex15_faq.asp)where you get 6 packs to make a deck and additional boosters at the end of the event. It's a good introduction to the newest set and there's usually heaps of trading among people.

I'm just 14, for me, Pokemon cards is just a pastime and a way to make new friends. I do schoolwork first :D so kids there, don't skip school ok? Have fun playing!

Deepblue, I know where you're coming from. I'm 17 too and I've only recently just started playing again. And I think I stopped about the same sets you did. But I've never played in tournaments, I don't get them around here. Just with my brother and crazy friend who's also into it. Aside from them no one knows I still play because yeah I do feel a bit lame. In my eyes pokemon IS childish but I still play it because it's fun. I mainly like collecting too. But I hate buying them, the shop owners always give you the dirtiest looks as if you're really pathetic, especially because you have to ASK for the cards when they keep them behind the counter.

But it doesn't really bother me much. :p

well, im only 14-ish but it's still fun for me, tcg made my life colorful and fun!:D:D

and 17 is ok age for the game, most 15+ champs are like 19-21 !

I am also 17 years of age, and I just see Pokemon Cards another one of my hobbies; it even helps me become more stragetic. Anything you do that is fun for you, shouldn't be something you should hide and be embarrassed about.

im where a couple days started to being 12 =P, but where i play, sometimes, on big tourneys there are 2 players that are like, 30, more or less

hello! im 16..but if ive learnt one thing over my life, it's to never be ashamed of what you do! my room is coverd in "uncool" thinngs such as pokemon posters , yu-gi-oh stuff and music bands that not everyone like (murderdolls anyone?:D) .anywho, when people come round, they always quetion why i have all this stuff around, and often cards on the floor (yes im messy). i just tell them striaght, i play pokemon cards, do this, do that, its awesome. and if it doesnt bother me telling them, it doesnt bother them,. if i sorta shyly went "uh..oh god..theyre..theyre for..my..brother!! yeah theyre not mine! please dont tell anyone!" then it would look pathetic, and hilariuos! you cant mock someone by taunting "you collect pokemon" if they just reply with "yeah!". in facttt..well i have some pretty awesome friends and an awesome girlfriend, they just saw all this malarky, and wanted to join in! so now theres about 10 of us in all, e can spen the holidays going to tournaments trading and meeting up to play :D so..the moral of the story is....be proud (lol that sounds so cheesy) of what you do. heh heh
have a great day!

Well, I would be one of the younger players here. I'm only 12 years old. I know it is a suitable age for Pokemon, and it matches my age. But, I am still worried about what my school friends will think about me playing Pokemon Cards. Why? Because my other friends aren't as interested into it unlike me. So, I keep my interest as a secret, away from my friends. So, I guess you could still play it if you want. :D

I'm 16 years old. But, like other say, there were older people who also play Pokemon TCG in my area.
Instead of being interested only in youngster group, there were some 30+ people who also interest too. When I'm having a game with my friend in school, my English teacher seems to be interested also. She ask me the rules, cards, ... Everything about Pokemon. She also asked me to be her short-time tutor.

pokemon world championship:
I'm not lying, but there where AT LEAST double the amount of 15+ players then there where players who where 15-

the anime might be childish, but the TCG and GBA(DS) games aren't really childish, finding a decent strategy or creating a decent team is a difficult thing to do

well, I'm only 15, but I feel in no way too old to play the TCG whatsoever, I think you'll find most of the members here being older then 15

anyways, if you choose to come back to the TCG, I welcome you, if not, well, I respect your opinion

Hmm, I'm only 11.... And I think people in my area which are a lot older than me play... I admit it, I don't like telling my friends at school that I play Poekmon, but what do you know? I went to my friends BD, and saw a whole bunch of people there that were older than me play Pokemon!
*realized off topic*

Well, it dosen't matter what other people think, it matters what you think. If you enjoy it, than ENJOY. Who cares what other people thinks? It's them missing the fun and not you.

I am 18 but I admit that I am not very open about it. Not because I am ashamed of my age but because in england, pokemon was not popular for very long. But seeing as they still stock pokemon boosters it seems that there are still a lot of fans here. And I doubt all of them are under the age of 16. I know a lot of serious collectors.
