What made Game Freak decide to get away with putting profanity in it? Can someone explain that to me?

cofagrius? how is that profanity?
Cofagrigus is 10 letters long, the maximum length of a Pokemon name (The translation team can't increase the letter limit). I could see them calling it "Cophagrigus", but that is 11 letters. So they removed the -ph-, and replaced it with an F.
Like of it like Feraligatr. They just changed the spelling a bit to make it fit in the letter limit.

Id have probably agreed more with you if the word were more explicit, but f*g isn't exactly an internationally-recognised profanity

A better name for Cofagrigus would have been Sarcoofoo (a play on Khufu, an Egyptian pharoah).
In any case I don't think that the naming commitee (of whom there were probably only six or so members. It certainly wasn't anything like a staff of 20 people or anything like that.) all decided on the name but pronounced it with the "fAHg" in the middle. If it were ever pronounced a la the British cigarette, I'm sure some ears would have pricked up and went Yeahbutwhat?

^It would not have been better, because your opinion is not the only one, and thus people think differently.
For example, Sarcoofoo seems a little too babyish sounding in my opinion.

My personal choice for a name replacement is "Sarcophant" or "Sarcomen", suffixing with root words from "phantasm" or "omen".
