Hi Pokebeach trainers,

We're having some trouble to make a viable Altaria-GX deck on Standards, I would like to have your help on reviewing this deck. We're looking for suggestions on how to improve it, and to know if Altaria-GX's viable to play on competitive Standard meta.

Monsters (
. 2 Swablu DRM 56
. 2 Swablu DRM 57
. 2 Altaria GX
. 2 Altaria DRM 40a
. 2 Kyurem DRM 47
. 1 Manaphy SLG 25
. 1 Lapras SLG 21
. 1 White Kyurem LOT 63
. 1 Tauros GX SUM 100
. 1 Tapu Lele GX 60a

Trainers(27):
. 4 Cynthia
. 2 Guzma
. 1 Lillie
. 1 Acerola
. 1 Prof Elm's Lecture
. 1 Olivia .
. 1 Mina
. 1 Prof Kukui
. 2 Ultra Ball
. 2 Nest Ball
. 1 Pal Pad
. 1 Energy Recycler
. 1 Poison Barb
. 1 Rescue Stretcher .
. 1 Repel
. 1 Max Potion
. 2 Choice Band
. 1 Field Blower
. 1 Energy Retrieval
. 1 Loto Energy

Energy (17):
. 10 water
. 5 Fairy
. 1 Rainbow
. 2 Double Colorless

Basically what we most want with this deck is to setup Altaria GX with Fight Song and Choice band to make the most damage while being safe with Bright Tone. This is a deck we're trying to find other monsters harmonious with Altaria-GX and this situation.

Are those Trainers coherent with our strategy? Would a deck with Hammers and Skull Grunts fit better?

Thanks!

I used Altaria GX in my previous league cup (expended format). I didn't do too well because I just started playing Pokemon TCG this year, and I still have tons to learn from; however, I think way too many trainers there didn't expect seeing Altaria GX in action. I used Altaria GX (2), Noivern GX (2) and Darkrai GX (2) as my three attackers.

The deck worked fairly good here and there for its purpose. I used Skull Grunts to force the player to discard energies, Noivern GX to lack items, Altaria GX to lack GX. I used Darkrai GX's ability, "Restoration", to speed up the energy charge along with trainer card, "Mina". I was able to use Altaria GX to beat a Rayquaza GX, and also a Shiftry GX deck. If this deck has a good and proper setup, it's a pain to play against. I have one trainer said this deck is pure evil, so I think it's not too bad!

I didn't have any baby Altaria in my deck, so I used Choice Band instead. Thou, I'm trying to work on this deck to make it viable, and I really think Altaria GX has so much potential to be good. I need suggestions also if anyone knows how to make this deck competitive enough to be a standard meta!

Seems interesting but how do you manage energies for this deck? Rainbow energies to fit both dragons? Was this mainly a Dark deck with Altaria GX?

Thanks! :D

I used 2 rainbow energies, 6 Fairy and 6 Darkness energies! When I first built this deck, I was meant to build a 50/50 fairy and dark deck, because it has the ability to lack something either way. My main attacks are either "Bright Tone (lack GX)" or "Distort (lack items)", depends on whichever can come first based on my setup, then I'd try to get the second attack on the line; while waiting to bring Darkrai GX in action.

It might not be the best deck to make a good cut in a tournament, but if you managed to make it work, it's such a fun deck, and you'd definitely make your opponent remember the nightmare you brought on the table! I think. :)

Here are a few cards I would use/experiment with Altaria-Gx.

1. Ditto Prism with Lance Prism.

By using those 2 cards you could easily remove 2 Swablu from your list to free some space. You could in theory play no Swablu at all and entirely rely upon those 2 cards to set Altaria-Gx up with the 40 extra damage to use it as a backup attacker and as a counter to specific decks.

2. Zoroark-Gx and/or Fairy Ninetales-Gx

These could definitely help regarding consistency/energy accelereation which your deck seems to be lacking. It could also allow you to use some sort of energy acceleration. Zoroark-Gx could allow more Mina plays. Fairy Ninetales-Gx could be played with Aqua Patch and water types maybe.

3. Goomy

Goomy would suit well a disruption oriented deck and could be a potent attacker and partner for Altaria-Gx. Attach a Rainbow Energy with Hustle Belt and he can swing for 70dmg while hindering your opponent with Sticky Membrane. Add in Fight Song for up to 110dmg. Rainbow Energy is already a good inclusion for Altaria-Gx.

And I would probably have a look at those: Volcanion Prism, Xerneas Prism, Latios Prism, Latias Prism and Noivern-Gx.

This seems like an interesting way to lock your opponent down, first Noivern to avoid setup through items and later Altaria to lock GX attacks. How did you do against those "famous decks" like Malamar/Necrozma, Lost Zone and Zoroark-GX?
Is Devoured Land/Waste Land stadium good for this deck?

Good ideas you did there, Ditto Prism and Fairy Ninetales-GX was one we started to try as soon as I did post this here. Things got faster using those two, specially with Ditto's ability which can be adapted as necessary and Ninetales-GX bringing Ultra-Ball to evolve Altaria and a tool.

Lance Prism is a interesting one, I got one but didn't get interested at first, mostly because I didn't interpret it correctly. I thought it was something like place 2 basic Dragon monsters in your bench after being knocked out, BUT I didn't know it was skipping basic ones! In fact this would turn this deck into a faster one. For those prism cards, do you suggest having Gladion to find prized ones?

Zoroark-GX, maybe this is what we're looking for, accelerate setup and energies. We did print some proxies of it, we'll try at home to check how it goes but really looks interesting.

So many good suggestions you're all giving us, we'll gradually test and report results here!

Thank you very much!!

I used "Devoured Land" and "Lysandre Labs". Lysandre Labs is basically for me to knock away Shrine of Punishment, or in case if someone used Float Stone or Choice Band (in the situation if Altaria GX wasn't in action).

I'm trying to make this deck consistent, this deck is about playing against time, especially if you're playing against Zoroark GX deck. Once you get Altaria GX in action, Zoroark GX can't do any damage at all, and you could either run your opponent's deck off or do slow damage bit by bit; hence, it pretty much guarantees that you can win or at least get a tie in this game.

Lost Zone is the one that I don't know what to do yet; I'm thinking that by using A.Ninetales GX (spreads damage) instead of Darkrai GX could be a possible solution, also, A.Ninetales' GX move could knock out Necrozma in one shot. Maybe A. Ninetales is the answer for this deck.

I made a good template for you guys to work from. It includes cards to make it more consistent and more competitive. I opted for a disruptive deck approach.

With this in mind, I included both Noivern-Gx and Altaria-Gx in the deck so you can choose which one is the best given the situation. They are both played without Swablu and Noibat. So, only Ditto Prism or Lance Prism can get them out (maybe a Gladion should be included in case something is prized). Note that this limits you to use a maximum of 3 Dragon Pokemon during the game.

It is basically a thinner Zoroark-Gx/Weavile deck with more disruption and Altaria-Gx, Noivern-Gx and Ninetales-Gx as secondary attackers. You have Weavile as a non Gx or EX to counter a lot of ability reliant decks and to help win the prize trade. You can use Zoroark-Gx and Acerola to cycle the single DCE I have included in case you need to play around 2HKO decks (also helps against spread decks). Acerola with Rainbow Energy lets you remove prizes if you need to stall with Altaria-Gx to win or it can also let you use Ditto or Fairy Alolan Ninetales-Gx more than one time. The deck plays enough disruption from what I have experienced so that Noivern-Gx's second attack can be used and effectively work. Fairy Ninetales-Gx can be useful as an attacker sometimes but it's main purpose is to use the ability to draw into the items you need (Ultra Ball, Hammers, Switch and Custom Catcher being the main targets).

From this I believe that you can find something somewhat competitive and you can decide to remove some cards here and there and tweak it as you like.

Yesterday we did put Alola Ninetales Fairy GX, Zoroark GX and Lance Prism to try those ideas all you sent me. Altaria deck’s my wife’s deck, mine’s a standard Malamar Necrozma GX one, with all those news this deck started to get speed and turn into a threat to Malamar Necrozma deck, Zoroark fits very well to setup Altaria at maximum support and output. This is getting really good!

I made this other list more focused on Altaria-Gx (1-2 line). I felt the last version with Noivern-Gx was still a bit too slow for my liking (too many hammers and stuff that can make you brick 1st turn). Altaria-Gx suits more my play style also.

Here is a summary:

- I did not notice that detail before but arguably the 3 most op Stage1 Gx in the game can use the same Unit Energy (DYF). So Unit Energy (DYF) allows us to include another very strong Pokemon to pair with Zoroark-Gx and Ninetales-Gx. In fact, Lycanroc-Gx is a very nice fit. He gives control with Blood Thristy and allows us to work with a different type of attacker who also has a very good GX attack. With this new line I removed Custom Catcher and improve consistency elsewhere instead.

- Since Altaria's second attack can take care of Hoopa SL or Xurkitree-Gx I decided not to include non-Ex/Gx attackers. They are not needed anymore unless you want to swing the prize trade against some matchup (like Lost March). Swinging the prize trade is very less likely now with the deck but there is more control and consistency to compensate.

- I included only 1 Altaria DM since i felt like 20 extra damage was enough to reach magic numbers and it only boosts Altaria-Gx while we have other good attackers also. For Altaria-Gx the magic number would definitely be 130dmg so you can do either do 2HKO with 1st attack (2x70dmg) or OHKO with the 2nd attack (130dmg). Against Gx you do not need to care much about the damage you do since you are immune anyways. With a Choice band, 1 Altaria DM and Devoured Field you can reach 170dmg on Gx. While Altaria-Gx can hardly pull a OHKO on most Gx, we have Trickster-Gx, Sublimation-Gx or Dangerous Rogue-Gx we can use.

- I threw in 1 Mina and 2 basic Fairy energies to give a little energy boost to the deck. That way you can charge 2 Energies in a single turn and use most of the attacks available. Also, I kept 1 DCE to play around Zoroark-Gx/Acerola if needed.

- Consistency was improved by including more Mysterious Treasures (which can grab either Altaria DRM, Altaria-Gx, Tapu Lele-Gx or Marshadow) and draw supporters.

--------------------

As a final note, I played Devoured Field but Altar of the Moone might be a better inclusion. The deck is consistent to my liking and can stream through the deck at a decent speed. It has good match up against a lot of meta decks while not being too weak to a particular match up.

Very cool and disruptive deck to test, the only thing that prevents me from using it is the lack of Rainbow Energy at mine collection. While locking down GX or Items, you're trying to 'peel' the opponent's resources right? I'm definitely interesting on trying this, is this a deck you normally use? How do you deal with Custom Catchers?
How's it going lately?

Thanks for the idea!

At the moment I do not play much Standard and do not use those attackers much but I have experienced a bit with them in the past and just now because I wanted to update my current knowledge of it.

I tested a few games with different ideas. Sometimes I felt like I was missing a Magcargo in the deck to get what i needed. Noivern-Gx and Altaria-Gx have good abilities but do not perform in the current meta. Altaria-Gx works fine against Gx decks but there are a lot of non-Gx decks being played at the moment. Noivern-Gx does great against item decks and special energy decks but the format is not item heavy and people play a lot of basic acceleration decks.

I feel like both Altaria-Gx and Noivern-Gx are good side techs that someone need to keep in mind and they might be good with SM9-SM9a. If the meta shifts away from non-Ex/Gx decks and becomes more item reliant, we could see this being played more efficiently. We will have to wait and see but things like Pokemon Communication and Dedenne-Gx could give more consistency and help the make sure you can always setup.

Custom Catcher is best played usually with a 2-2 Fairy Alolan Ninetales-Gx line. The first Mysterious Guidance is often used for Ultra Ball or Nest Ball. So when you only play 1-1 line Custom Catcher is hard to afford and clunks your deck more than not.

It isn't available yet because it's in the upcoming set but Viridion Forest ( I think that's how it's spelt) could help you get the two energy attachments more consistently. Viridion Forest is a stadium that allows you to get an energy from your deck when you discard a card from your hand.

Just to make it clearer for me, when you say 2-2 Fairy Alolan Ninetales-GX line, what is it? 2 Vulpix and 2 Ninetales?

Nice card, I'm constantly seeing it on Japanese deck recipes, specially on Malamar decks. What do they normally do with it on Malamar decks? Discard one energy when you got 2 on hand?

I assume in Malamar it helps one get the metal attachment to attack with.

I see, so that’s why I saw on Ultra Necrozma GX decks, that makes sense! Cool card to work on more than one color deck! I thought Ultra Necrozma gx users would choose for 4 unity energies.

The problem with Unit is it isn't searchable though and can't be taken from the discard.

Yes in standard it is harder to draw into special energy. Too bad that Mallow is rotating because Dedenne-Gx with Mallow would have allowed for a powerful search engine in standard. In expanded I use Shaymin/Mallow to draw into Beast Energy and make Pheromosa-Gx donk reliable. I was hoping that with the reprint of Pokemon Communication to play something similar in standard but alas.
