RE: Bible Time

Its probably for the best though. God knows whats right, not us. We'd probably end up making the situation worse.
Sometimes I just want to tell God "Okay, let me handle this for once.". And I can picture him smiling, and telling me "Lol no", and solving my problems anyways.
Read those two quotes concurrently and you'll start to laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaugh.

RE: Bible Time

Well, God is amazing and I love him, but sometimes it seems like he's "out to get me." Like things go wrong at school, my parents get mad at me, I get bad marks at school. Stuff like that. Is there any specific verses you guys know that might help me?

First of all, try praying more to God. As crazy as it sounds, he's using those events, like your parents getting mad at you, for something good. You just won't find out for a while. Its one of those crazy God things. :)

Second, a verse that I think would really help you would be James 1:2-3, which reads:
James 1:2-3 said:
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance

RE: Bible Time

If your parents get mad at you, remember it is probably only because they love you. I don't know your situation, but usually when your parents get mad at you, it is to teach you a lesson. I hope this helps into seeing God's plans for you.

I dont know any specific verses but I do know that bad things happen to good people because the devil tries to tempt good people but he doesnt need to do that to bad people since he has them where he wants them.

Gods doings will always have a good outcome (as long as they are responed to correctly). In Greece, there is a story of good and bad things happening, which lead to a different out come. In the beginning, a man buys a horse, which is a good thing. But, he falls off and beaks his leg. This is a bad thing but happened for a reason. Because of that, he didn't have to fight in a war though, which is good. Good things can lead to bad things, but by responding to them correctly, you can make good things happen. Sorry I don't know any versus.

RE: Bible Time

Wow, thank you so much everyone! I really like that verse, Bippa, I think I'll write it down. Its amazing how we should consider it pure joy to go through trials. And, quite honestly, all of your advice really has shed light on my situation. I will now try to look on my trials as an oppurtunity to honour God. Thanks everyone!! :D

RE: Bible Time

Think of it as God's way of making sure you don't ignore him. :p

I feel like everyone who wanted to say something about this topic. But safariblade comes back in a few days, so I don't think its worth making a giant topic that lasts only 2 days. So, I've got a little bit of a mini-topic for us to talk about, and its really simple.

What's your favorite book of the bible?

RE: Bible Time

I personally really like Ephesians. It has great messages, like The Armor of God. Man, I love Paul's messages. :D

Yeah, at times, it seems like bad things shouldn't be happening. But think of it this way, if God didn't throw little things at us to make us grow stronger, (physically, socially, spiritually, etc.) we would all be so helpless. And often, God doesn't bring about the frustrating situations we are in, we do. God is there to help us get past difficult things. God wants us to do good.
2 Thessalonians 3:13 said:
As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good.
That verse helps to encourage me to keep on a path of good. And by that, all I mean is that I try to do what God calls me to do. Another verse that is very helpful for this discussion is:
Romans 5:3-4 said:
More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope
Not only does God want us to do good despite the suffering, he wants us to rejoice in our struggles. By surviving our endeavors with Christ, we grow to be strong in our Christian faith. We have experience that is vital to use in teaching others about Christianity. After all of this, if you find yourself stuff frustrated or disheartened because of suffering, you can always remmeber the popular and powerful verse:
Philippians 4:13 said:
I can do all this through Christ who gives me strength.

RE: Bible Time

Thanks safari for the verses you always seem to have the perfect ones! I will be away for the next few days. I am going to a sleepaway camp with my church; it should be fun! We have some awesome games and learn great lessons so it should be fun.

RE: Bible Time

No problem.

Anyways, this last week was probably the best week of my life. Being with a bunch of other people at camp who all share the same passion for your faith is an amazing experience. I'm on such a spiritual high right now, and I hope I can keep it. That is one benefit of daily reading and daily prayer.

But yeah, the trip basically consisted of a lot of prayer, tons of worship (with great music) and a lot of small group and 'bible time'. We also did a bunch of stuff like hiking, water rafting, etc. We also had like a huge mud-fight. haha. I learned a lot of things and heard a bunch of great stories that I will eventually pass to others. (including you guys maybe)

I think tomorrow we will all begin to read 1 Corinthians together. If you feel unsure about reading, just try it. You don't have to post here, you can just lurk. But If you have any questions, go ahead and post them or PM me if you want it to be private. Tomorrow around this time (11:00 PM CST) I will post my thoughts on 1 Corinthians Chapter One, and I encourage you to do the same. Unless you guys think otherwise, we will try to to do one chapter per day.

RE: Bible Time

I'll probably be lurking and reading unless something really pops out at me.

And SB, I absolutely LOVE camp! I actually missed out on it this year as it filled up too quickly, but it really is an amazing experience.

RE: Bible Time

My church actually has a camp up to Sequoia for my Bible study group, and although it might be a nice idea, it's the same weekend as Worlds, so unfortunately I'm not going. Phooey.

RE: Bible Time

1 Corinthians: Chapter One
This is my first time reading this, so everything I discuss below is pretty much from the top of my head. I encourage you guys to read and post your own thoughts. You don't have to preach or anything, just express youth thoughts here so we can all share our reading experience. If you don't want to read, but would rather just respond to the discussion here, that is fine.

So 1 Corinthians is the first letter to the church of Corinth by Paul. He begins by talking about Thanksgiving. Giving thanks to God. He says that he thanks God because God gives us spiritual gifts so that we are strong in our faith. "He will keep you firm until the end." - I personally already know that God is there for us to make us strong, but it gives me comfort to see it repeated in the Bible. Although Paul is writing, the Bible is considered the Word of God, and we should remember it as such.

He then talks about divisions in the church. "I urge you, brothers... that all of you agree in what you say..." - This is very powerful, and it in some ways seems like we have failed. There are many Christians, but look how divided we have become in this modern day with so many denominations. Catholics & Protestants & Baptists. But the beauty is that our foundation of our beliefs - Christ - is what we should look to. That actually ties into the meaning of this group. I want this to be a bond of Christians, who, even though come from different backgrounds, all come together to learn about Christ in one of the only common things we have, the Bible. "Is Christ Divided? Was Paul Crucified for you?" - Remember that. This is all about Jesus and his sacrifice for us. That is our Christian belief.

The next bit, about the Paradox of the Cross is about the same idea of the foundation of Christian belief. The way I take it, is it comes down to us believing in Jesus and his suffering on the cross. One great quote from this is:
1 Corinthians 1:25 said:
For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
Paul is not meaning to say God is foolish or weak, but he is showing just how superior he is to us and our humanly ways. He is the creator. If we live our lives through him and for him, he will bless us with strength and wisdom that we need.

This leads to Paul's next point, The Corinthians & Paul. For this, think of yourself as the Corinthians. Paul is speaking to us after all. He tells us that God calls the weak and foolish to speak to. This is echoed in many other readings. Jesus did not come for the righteous, but for those sinners who need his help. (But as we know, we are all sinners who need His Grace.)
We must learn to love God for what he has done, and remember, "Whoever boasts should boast in the Lord." - An amazing and so true quote from this chapter. It is also the ending words.

First impressions for me are good. Its amazing that a man could have so much knowledge. I could never write something like this, but then again, Paul was able to talk to Jesus himself. That would have been so powerful...

RE: Bible Time

/me has never read through this book before, so he doesn't know what its about.

This book really taught me some really interesting lessons about life. Verses 4-9 tell us why we should be thankful; he's given me so much, I gotta thank him for it. He keeps me strong so that when I stand before him, I will be blameless. God is Faithful, and we should be thankful for that.

Verse 17 said:
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the Gospel-not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
I thought this was the Christian mission statement, so to speak. We are to preach the words of the Gospel. But if we don't tie in God's awesomeness into it, we're wasting our time.

Verse 19 said:
I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate
I thought this verse tied in well with Verse 17. Without telling people how great God is, they're left dumbfounded and frustrated at the thought of following him, because they weren't told what he's capable of.

Verse 31 said:
For as it is written, "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord
I found this a really powerful verse. It doesn't matter if you tell everyone you have $50 000, or a giant house, or a car, or something really cool. Nothing, but God, is worth boasting about, because nothing but God lasts for an eternity. If you want to boast about something, boast about something with longevity, like God's love and faithfulness for us.

RE: Bible Time

Thanks for the input! I think it reenforces my own thoughts, which is nice for me to hear. I think that I might leave discussion for each chapter open for a couple of days before moving on. It seems like everyone is busy - including myself, school starts for me soon.

RE: Bible Time

I just got back from camp! It was AMAZING and I learned so much. We heard a lot of stuff we already knew about the Gospel, but there were only three seventh grade guys so we got to build on a lot of what we already knew. I learned of the awe- inspiring power of prayer which I will talk about later. We had a huge time of worship on the last night which was great, I felt totally in sync with God. We played tons of awesome games like always which added to the fun.

Since the seventh grade guys were some of the oldest, we went out with some of the sixth graders and prayed for them. We learned that prayer can be done for anyone and that it has SO MUCH power. God even displayed it on the last night. One of the other guys lost his voice. One of our leaders decided that we should all pray together for it after we had done a time of prayer for each other. We all put our hand on our brother and God and our leader prayed. Afterwards our leader asked if his voice felt any different. He talked and said he instantly felt a difference! God is so awesome, amazing, and powerful!

RE: Bible Time

I was granted permission to start chapter 2 discussion pre-emptively, because A) I procrastinated too much and B) i iz ninja

So here's my overview.

Up to verse 8: Paul says it pretty plainly here - the gospel is not complicated whatsoever. Therefore as carriers of it we need to try to follow his example - that is, make it as simple as we can without overcomplicating things, but at the same time, don't sacrifice vital information either (or be wrong). I know that a few of us try to think up schemes to try and get people into salvation (I know I do because I feel so powerless), but really, it isn't as hard as we think. At the same time, the people who we're telling it to may view it as totally foreign or even hostile (cf. v. 8) but that doesn't mean we should stop trying. If they find it a bit confusing but they're receptive, we break it down. If they find it hostile, we just back off and pray for them.

Up to verse 16: The latter half of the chapter actually brings up the necessity of preaching the gospel: We have been given a tremendous gift, the capability (and also the charge) to go preach the gospel. The unsaved around us won't know the gospel very well unless it gets explained to them (cf. v. 14); therefore it's our duty to not misrepresent God. God has all sorts of things prepared for us that we can't even imagine (cf. v. 9), and you can divide that into two parts: the immediate part of our salvation, and the far-off part of our completion (where mind will equal blown).

What did the rest of you peeps get out of it?

RE: Bible Time

"No Eye has seen. No ear has heard. No mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"

I love this part. Easily, it shows how great God is, and how fantastic the plans he has for us really are.

We have the mind of Christ, meaning that we know how God instructs us. At least, that's how I understood the Verse 16.

Really, quite the cool chapter. I really like that this is where we started.
