'Blue Impact' / 'Red Flash' Japan's XY8 Sets, Next Set Block Titled 'XY: BREAK!'

Do we know if Wally can be used to play a Break card? It could speed things up if so.

At the very least it can be used to get out the Stage 1 or Stage 2 form. Not sure how Wally will interact with Break Evolutions, given that they are similar-but-different to Level Up cards and we can't always rely on spoiler translations (no offense to the translators - it is a difficult task even when you aren't dealing with TCG rules!).

Wally would have been able to interact with mega evolutions like evosoda does if it didn't restrict pokemon EX, Break Evolution is a type of evolution so I'd think Wally would work with it.

I could see this being a pretty good deck in the future due to Giant Plant Forest coming out to speed up evolution. The hardest part though is the energy cost...

Unless they errata the card, I don't see how Wally wouldn't work. All Pokemon that evolve say "Evolves from", which is what Wally specifies. They had to specifically exclude Pokemon-EX in the text.

Anyway, if the wording is correct, I'm guessing that any Pokemon with an Ancient Trait won't Break Evolve. The text would be covered and it's not listed in the mechanic. But I guess most Pokemon with Ancient Traits so far have been more for support than offense.

While it seems most likely Wally will work, we are still learning about the cards in question, hence my caution. Possible reasons Wally won't work are that:

  1. Our Wally actually could be incorrectly worded; we've had that happen before where something was translated one way, but later releases made us realized the English (or whatever the local language) version didn't completely align with the Japanese and so it needed a different (often more cumbersome) translation. I don't know if the recent "Defending Pokémon" versus "Active Pokémon" distinction is an actual example of this or if it also changed in the Japanese, but it has indeed happened before.
  2. I haven't seen a good, clear image of these cards but I haven't been looking. If the translators are certain they have seen all the rules text on the cards... okay. Otherwise there is a risk that we missed a clause somewhere, such as "must be played from hand".
I apologize if these sound more than a bit paranoid, but long time players have had these kinds of things happen multiple times. ;)

Oh, and there is a third possibility; it will work with Wally/Evosoda but we don't know if Break Evolutions require waiting a turn before you Evolve something into one of them. ;)

The rules of evolution are likely no different for Break Evolutions. But if Wally is usable, then you should be able to Break Evolve with the Supporter in the same turn you put down the Pokemon that can Break Evolve.

The Zorua are so similar that I wouldn't be surprised if one didn't make it into the English set since we don't do the whole two subset gimmick. And in that case, you just know the Red Flash one won't make the cut. D:

Card looks good but I'm still waiting for my Pidgeot EX and M-Pidgeot EX. With BREAK evolution, I would have like it to be a stage 2 you can play from your had as a basic.

I really want to see a faster way to get stage 2 Pokemon in play and a way to maintain them but not make them overpowered.

I've seen many posts saying TPCi should make stage 1 & 2 to compete with the EX.
Now when company is doing exactly that, I wouldn't be surprised if some of those again complaint about viability and energy cost of stage 1s and 2s, also the space they consume compared to the EXs.

I personally like how they are trying to bring "odd" numbers to the cards HP. I mean, basically today if you can hit 180, u can knock out most mon in the format, except for mega, wailord and Double Crisis EX's (which are not so competitive cards). Although the cost of its attack is huge, and the extra attack of its break evo has recoil, nobody is really obligated to use that specific attack (maybe it can be used as a last resort kind of thing, like Seismitoad's grenade hammer, or Donphan's Wreck). Besides, giant plant forrest is coming to the format, and Sceptile's nurture and heal can help a lot to fulfill healing and energy acceleration for grass types like this one.

I want a way to eat what I want, when I want and as much as I want but maintain a sensible weight; why it is hypothetically possible (mainly by finding a way to alter what I want so that it conforms to healthy diet), it for the most part it isn't realistic.

You want to make Evolutions better? The main thing would be to fix Evolving Pokémon because nearly all of them are badly under-powered, turning them into a burden for the Evolved form to bear and then fix the pacing. Big Basic Pokémon have an advantage until Evolving Pokémon are worth the space and time added in running them. There is a bit more to it than that, but this is what can be immediately done with any cards they are still designing.

Otherwise I would prefer if "Break Evolution" basically became the default Evolution mechanic; doesn't quite work without some tweaking but better Evolving Pokémon plus access to their attacks and Abilities could do wonders.

The main issue with evolving basic is not the mechanic, rather the way the cards are designed. When I built my Pidgeot FF deck, I had to cut things like laser because there was no room. A standard 4-2-4 like with Rare Candy/Soda can take at least 14 slots. The problem is trainer cards are too powerful and are used to win the game, rather than aid the Pokemon. Evolving pokes can also be better but they need to be good but not to the point to where they are godlike. Also, not all EX Pokemon are overpowered since a few evolving Pokemon are better than them.

A fair way to fix this is to put abilities on cards that can heal them through evolving or make a stadium or tool that helps aid in their staying power so they can evolve. I really though BREAK break would be a way to play down a stage 1 or stage 2 pokemon without needing the requirements to play it. The way to fix evolution is to just make trainer cards less powerful.

I've thought this too for a long time. With Stage 2 in particular, what would help significantly is better Stage 1's. Instead of the current situation where they are barely better than their Basic and we do everything we can to avoid placing them, Stage 1 should instead be viable on their own and be able to hold it over relatively well until the next Stage can be played. This means better HP, better attacks, and better attack costs. Heck, start putting abilities on them more often too.

There's only one Stage 1 in the current format that I'd feel comfortable having on the field until I can get my Stage 2 out. And that's depressing for me, not just because it really hurts the playability of their Stage 2's, but because there's a lot of these Stage 1 Pokemon that I like.

The best Stage 1 I've ever seen in the TCG (admittedly I've not seen all of it) was Gabite from DRX I believe. It had the ability that let you search for a Dragon-Type once per turn.

That is an awesome ability that evolved into an awesome stage 2. That's how Evo lines should be done.

I mean, it's been three months. Any translation errors would have been picked up.

At most, I could see an errata saying it now excludes Pokemon BREAK (or even a reprint to that effect) but I don't see them coming out and saying it was mistranslated

Chesnaught BREAK is giving me some flashbacks to Torterra Lv.X.

Ahhh, Torterrible. How I miss thee.

this may be that sceptile partner I was looking for! Sure, Its alot of space, but think. Now Msceptile helps a fellow powerful grass type! with giant plant forest, and energy acceleration, this may be a 2-2-2-2 thing in a mega sceptile deck. Muscle band, 180, 30 to itself, 190 hp, 30 to all the opposing bench, this might be something decent with Mega sceptile. Wouldn't that be something.

Chesnaught Break isn't powerful enough. Yeah he spreads damage but other than hitting for Weakness on the Primals, which other Pokemon can do and much quicker, Chesnaught (Break and Stage 2) doesn't have much going for him.

160 Damage. Yeah that's OHKOs Grass Weak Pokemon so there's that. But you can do that with a 130 damage attack. 160 is a strange number since it OHKOs for Weakness but doesn't OHKO non-Grass Weak Pokemon. Even with Muscle Band that's only 180. You could pseudo-OHKO 210 HP Pokemon but you would need Absol with Super Scoop Up for consistency and repetition.
Also, a 30 damage recoil is horrible and horrible and there wouldn't be room for Protection Cube or Muscle Band.

This brings us to the space problem. Having a consistent Chesnaught and Trainer line takes up so much space what's left is not much for support like Absol and Energy.

In short, stick with your Primal Kyogre for spread damage. He has synergy with Regice and Articuno and it much faster. Sceptile will only clog up Chesnaught's deck.

Let's not forget about Chesnaught XY who has that sexy strikes back power.

Hey I take offense to that, torterra lv x was my first card and I creamed a tornament with it
I apologize, but when I was playing the game, decks revolving around Torterra Lv.X and/or Turtwig GL were referred to as "Torterrible"/"Turterrible". I have absolutely zero doubt that, at its time, Torterra Lv.X was great; I'm just using the name people gave the deck.
