It has become one of the most known and most realistic forms of art over the past 10 years. Permanent Body Art, also known as tattoo'ing. Normally only allowed if you are 18+ (Don't worry if you are younger we won't tell), it can be one of the most decent and ways to express yourself and your feelings.

I had my first tattoo when I was 18 on holiday in Skegness, England and I was terrified. Being scared of needles as it was didn't help but the worst thing was expecting how the pain was going to be, and that was just for two names (my son and daughter) on my wrists. I can remember walking into the Tattoo Parlour (Black Orchid 2 or 3 if I remember) and explaining what I wanted... "£15 each" the man told me and my girlfriend handed the cash over.. Uh-oh I thought with fear running through my body. 10 minutes later I was out with a permament reminder of the most important things in my life on my body where I can look to make me smile, with not seeing them much. Later that night I went for a couple of beers with the girlfriends family and things got emotional and I ended up getting £20 for a third tattoo, my brothers name on my chest (he died at birth). The next day I went and had it done with no fear at all, I even had a little star to go with it as I am sure he would have been one if he survived.

That was my last tattoo until I decided I wanted another one late February/Early March, so I started to think about something that meant alot to me. Then it hit me, 6 Years of heartache, the one thing that helped me. 6 Years ago on the following dates are important;
13 August 2010 = Nanna Died
29 March 2011 = Grandma Died (I was named after her husband)
14 May 2011 = Close friend died in car accident in local village.

Through these tough times, I had one thing help me through and this was a song by the singer, Gabrielle. This song was Dreams. The chorus of the song sings "Dreams can come true, you know you got to have them, you know you gotta be strong." This made me think have that but I didn't want the lyrics in English. I looked at Arabian but then I thought, incorporate with something else close, Karate, which is Japanese so I set out on a design with Japanese writing and yes, Koi Carp.

I made a design on Photoshop

The original design

Someone I know had a look at the design and decided to improve the Koi as they wern't very impressive. I went to her house and she set off giving me my first major tattoo in the most painful place to have one, on the ribs, right hand side. Half way through we had a tea break.

Half way point

After 10 minutes we set off again. This was the final push, but 2 hours and 30 minutes into the tattoo my body gave up and I had to stop. This was the tattoo I was happy with, yet it wasn't finished.

99% Done

I have yet got to go back and get finished but I wanted to see your Body Art and see your thougts on tattoo's.

Please be reasonable and remember there are children on these forums.

Thanks.

At first it sounds all very neat, having the names of those who you want to remember, but then you should question yourself; do you really need ink penetrated in your skin to remember them? Couldn't you do without? Not to mention that it isn't healthy either; affecting your lymph nodes which on their turn slowly shut down your immune system. But then, who am I to decide for someone else.

@Pokequaza - Other than to remember them, it is also to show them off as I don't see my kids much so people ask who Georgi and Daniel are so I get to explain it to them.

@EHNH - Yes as that is 6 years she died, jus like 6 years ago on 14 May 2011 my friend died.

I don't have any tattoos myself, but I think they're pretty cool and everyone else in my family is obsessed with "ink." My parents have only a few but very intricate tattoos depicting different characters and scenes (my dad's favorite is a full-color one on his arm of an eagle carrying a snake, and my mom's is a half-colored one on the back of her shoulder depicting a fairy). My cousin and his wife, though, love getting tattoos (not to say they're covered in them, but you'll notice that they do have a lot of them when you see their arms and necks...clean ones, though, and nothing dirty since they have kids...). Likewise, his parents have a few elaborate tattoos from their biker days but nothing obscene or insinuative.

I love them but the latest one was a tad painful on the bone, but that won't stop me. I just won't go for ribs again lol

Love em! Want to get some sleeves from wrist all the way up to bicep!
was considering using video game characters on them, cover my arms in my favourite characters (want to add a gengar in there aswell LOL! The picture from the lvl X card from arceus is pretty sweet)
Have seen a few photos of geek sleeves and they look damn impressive

Each to there own mate! It's your body, skin, money thats going into this and if you want them then great :) can't currently see pictures couse im on work PC and it's got gay restrictions! Will check back when I get home tonight for the pictures

@payney_1991: My parents always adviced me against getting tattoos for that sole reason. I don't have a good tolerance for pain, so that was more than enough of a deterant. Still, the results are usually really amazing.

On a related side-note: my cousin and his wife were training at one time to become tattoo artists and even planned to open their own parlor, but that was put on hold when they got married and they had their first child together (he's got a stepson too from his wife's previous relationship, and so life happened).

Edit: Before I forget, there was one time I was giving serious thought to getting a mural-like tattoo done across my back depicting a wolf pack on the prowl under a full moon sky. But that would've been very long, very expensive, and very painful...so I talked myself out of it... Still tattoos are awesome!

@Cole'a - I think a sleeve with Anime or Magna art would look alot better than the standard biker styles. Pictures are pretty big so probably may be a bit blurry.

@ATI - A good place to have a tattoo is either arms or upper chest (avoiding ribs). The back supposedly isn't that bad depending where abouts it is.

Yeah, and that's another reason why I never got it done. However, I did know a guy who did have a large tattoo across his back, but I'm not going to describe it since it was rather...adult...

Also, please just call me Apollo. ATI is a little awkward for me, and there aren't any others here that go by Apollo (to my knowledge anyways).

I love tattoos and I wish to get at least 1 and probably more. My brother has two and my sister has couple, so yeah. I want one that symbolizes my love for pokemon and how it has been a part of my life. It's a half open pokeball with my favorite pokemon absol coming out in this shadowy looking form. I can't really explain it, but it looks really cool on paper.

Iunno. I don't think I would get a tattoo. If I did, it would be on my wrist (les bottom), and it would be a starmen symbol from Earthbound, or maybe a chair.

I think body art is pretty cool sometimes, but a lot of the time it seems like something they will regret.
Family member's names are understandable, except I'd never do that because I'm not so tight with my family.
I think if I ever got a tattoo it'd be
And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see
on my back. Because those lyrics say a lot about how I live.
Also it'd be kind of cool to get some subtle little drawings in places.

Song lyrics make the best tattoo's in my opinion. they look really nice down the back, ribs, leg and arm. They look best in old fashioned writing or even a foreign language such as Arabian or Latin.

I have a love/hate relationship with tattoos. I love them but I also think they are highly over-rated.

I would never get a tattoo because my interests always change. Any life changing event or whatever will forever be in my thoughts. If someone wants to know, I'll talk to them about it. Therefore, I would only get a tattoo for aesthetic/artistic purposes that represent myself creatively.

I can't stand when someone gets a butterfly/bumblebee/disney character/song lyrycs/Chinese, Japanese writing/peoples names. It seems fake to me.

Insects and disney characters are done waaay too much. I don't care if you were a Pooh fan, but it looks horrible on your fat arm.

Song lyrics is cliche unless its actually really good song lyrics. But I may have to slap the person if they have a Brittney Spears/Lady Gaga/Rihanna, etc tattoo on them.

I could go on forever on Chinese or Japanese character tattoos. People get them only cause it looks exotic and mystical. As well, the only research they did was typing "love" in google translator. I have actually seen tattoos in Japanese that are wrong. Like one where the person said it means "hope" and it was actually "gold" (kibou and kin in Japanese respectively).

But, if you have a creative idea for a tattoo with a really good reason behind it, then I have no problem with it.

@payney_1991 (on your comment right after my last one): Religious tattoos (of the cross, anyways) seem to be pretty popular nowadays. I know at least three guys who go to my church that have the symbol tattooed on their arms, though the Angel wings sounds like a cool effect that they don't have (theirs are just basic crosses with just some ornate textures added to make the symbol stick out more).

I think those of us that are inked have gone through both good and bad with tattoos. I was 16 when I got my first one, and remembered saying to myself that it would be the only tattoo I would ever get. It was a celestial design with a sun and moon, as I've always had a big interest in everything celestial. A year later, I got a nautical star on my upper right arm. A year after that, I got a set of two sparrows on my chest, with the lyrics "My hand thinks I'm an artist, but my heart knows I'm a poet" (Bright Eyes lyrics). A couple years later, one of my friends was apprenticing for tattoos, so he did a tattoo of Gir from Invader Zim, complete in his dog suit, on my foot.

I also have Kill Hannah's sniper heart logo on my left upper arm with the lyrics "How can hearts so young feel so much pain?", Chibiterasu from Okamiden on my left forearm, and i just got a tattoo of Suika Ibuki from Touhou Project on my upper left arm.

The nautical star on my right arm has since been covered up by what will eventually be a full Pokemon sleeve. I currently have Lucario, Buizel, Blaziken, and Flygon on it.
