Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I looked around and couldn't think of a better place to post this.

So I recently decided that I want to get into the pokemon TCG due to Vanguard getting a little stale for me and would like to know what a good budget deck would be. I've heard that the Solar Strike theme deck has a lot of good staple cards in it; would it be okay to just buy 2 theme decks and make something out of it? Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated :)

I want to say, most likely no. That will not work that well. It will give you a lot of useful trainer cards but other than that, meh. You need to decide what kind of deck you want to build and just buy singles most likely. Atm the cheaper decks that still do well that come to mind are.

-Tool Time (Trubbish/Sigilyph): A fun deck that relies on tools to attack. Its pretty good but its almost imperative that you go first to be successful. It has a lot of weaknesses that people dont seem to like to discuss, saying its a really good deck. I honestly have never lost to it on the PTCGO, using a bunch of rogue decks.

-Dragonite/Garbodor: One of my favorite decks atm. Once you get set up, it prevents items and abilities. Pretty much one of the most frustrating decks to play against, for certain decks. I have had a lot of success with this deck. But it can have issues setting up both, and has trouble against other dragon decks. Other than that, the top tier decks can also give this deck some trouble. Win % on PTCGO roughly 70%

-Beedrill: My current favorite deck. It is fairly cheap if you forgo the Virizion Ex. Which it can work without, but i prefer to have 1 in it. It plays off beedrills cheap 1 energy attack that does 60 damage, poisons and confuses, but it needs to be at full hp or it only does 20. With the stadium card, virbank city gym. It adds 2 damage counters between turns to poison pokemon. This deck has to run max potions and other ways to keep the beedrill healthy. But all in all it forces tons of switches that can mess up an opponents field. Either way you will be spending more on trainer cards than the pokemon, since the most expensive pokemon is like a $1.50 or something. My win % is currently 80% on PTCGO.

-Empoleon: This deck is runs on 1 energy as well. Empoleon does 10 damage x the number of pokemon on the field, being up to 120. The list i use also has 2 keldeo exs that can be bought like $7 ish as a single, or like $16 is as a tin with 4 packs. A pretty good deal. Either way this deck is pretty fun and reliable, though it has issues against deck that run very few pokemon on the field. Though with the metagame as it is now, it isn't much of a problem. My win % is about 60%

Anyway if you want sample lists or skeletons for these decks pm me or something.

After looking around a bit, i've seen that Blastoise/Kaldeo is a lot more popular than Empoleon/Kaldeo. Is that deck a bit more on the expensive side or is there a reason why you like Empoleon more than Blastoise.

Empoleon is tons cheaper than blastoise. Though i guess with the new set, blastoise is pretty cheap now. Also most blastoise keldeo decks also run black kyurem ex. Which can get expensive. It works without BKex, but not nearly as well. The deck also almost requires the card tropical beach. Which is insanely expensive, since its a worlds tournament only card. Once again it can work okay with out it. But it will be a lot less effective.

Either way i was posting decks that i played or knew exactly how to put together personally. I have never built a Black kyurem deck before, since it has such expensive cards in the common deck lists.

ah ic, thanks for the explanation! would you mind pming me a sample list for the empoleon/keldeo deck ?

If you want to play a doubled down theme deck, get the Frost Ray deck from Plasma Freeze, and get as many copies of it as you can. Vanilluxe attacks for 1 colorless and that attack stacks. Jolteon is a one colorless attacker as well, and Glaceon sits on the bench to make retreating free. I got that deck and I highly recommend it =)
